Still, one of Bo Burnham lines that always stays in my head whenever i watch anything of his is the intro to this special. "You used to do comedy when you felt like being funny. But now you're contractually obligated so dance you fucking monkey" that seemed to have set the tone for everything he's done after.

I think something people miss is when the disembodied voice says "your analysis and emotions are at war" could be seen as a sort of similar meaning as "We think We know You" as he wants to do what he wants but it doesnt seem marketable and like it is a good idea. The sensical part of bo sees why his humor isnt accepted and that most people wont like it but at the same time he wants to do what he wants

If this were part of a psych class, they'd have to have the major disclaimer that the left brain/right brain idea is a total myth 😂 But it could be a good segue into the actual different areas of the brain for logic and emotion.
@Justcallmekai11
@Justcallmekai11 3 жыл бұрын
This is true. Left and right brain is totally bunk but each side of the brain does have slight tendencies. People associate the left brain with analytics because that's where your speech centers are, also since most people are right handed (which the left side of the brain handles) the left brain usually has some stronger connections than the right. I have a psych degree lol.

There is a left and right hemisphere of the brain that controls specific things.
@magnussocks5119
@magnussocks5119 3 жыл бұрын
From my reading I'm not convinced its a total myth but it depends how you think of the premise. For instance, if you take away the categorical nature of the aforementioned right-left divide theory you can look instead at functionality and how functionality relates to attention. Its well documented by psychologists (take for example Dr Iain Mcgilchrist) that when individuals suffer a stroke (damage to right or left hemisphere) they not only have problems with function (such as speech or movement) but they also have pronounced changes in what they attend to and alterations in characteristics as a consequence. If you attend to less (understand less of the world, situation you are in) you often think you know more than you do and this influences you judgment, disposition etc. I would recommend having a look/listen to Mcgilchrists work if you are interested in the subject of hemisphere function, he worked in a hospital as a clinician and has a huge amount of knowledge on the physiology of the brain.
@IceMetalPunk
@IceMetalPunk 3 жыл бұрын
@@megasauruss Most functions are localized to specific areas of the brain, but that's more specific than just left/right. Other than laterality of movement, the entire right hemisphere doesn't have a theme in all its functions, such as "creative things"; likewise, the left hemisphere doesn't have an overall theme like "logical things". No one is saying that the existence of brain hemispheres is a myth; the myth is that each hemisphere controls a particular category of functions.

Something you said hit me really hard there and shocked me. I just realised, people are supposed to let children have a childhood, and have fun and no problems, because one day, life is rarely fun and you're stressed all the time, especially if you never learned to have fun as a kid. I was robbed of that growing up, and I didn't realise it fully until now. Wow.

Referencing your question at the end: I have internal arguments with myself often, whether it's challenging how I think, respond to a situation, or indecisiveness on what I should be doing with my time between creative pursuits and general life maintenance (until nothing happens at all because I get stuck). I know others do too, but I don't know if the average population does. Bo is the definition of a tortured artist, where his preferred medium causes so much anxiety because of his self-awareness and insecurities.

He also quotes Han Salo. “I love you”, ad libbed by Harrison Ford (Han) says “I know” which is what he thought Han would say. 24602 is Jan Val Jean’s next number (indicating he’s a slave) as in Les Mis (Prisoner 24601). Do “Country Song”. This was my favorite response by you. Good show. Subbed.

My whole teenage years (ongoing, I'm 15) was mostly controlled by my left brain. It really needed for everything (even feelings) a reason. Since last year, as I've almost had a burnout, I now know that I have to keep my right brain alife cause if it's dead, I'll be dead too. So I now try to find a balance between them. So glad that's not only me that's struggling with that shit.

I was the same way when I was younger, I was a complete study maniac and until I got into high school I was the genius of the class, etc, and was all left brain. But when I got into high school I had burnout where I went into a streak of depression and had to force myself to do any kind of work. The way I got into the opening and fixing myself was through reading and writing. It helps me leave all the stress I get throughout my days and just calm down, and I've been doing that for year's and it's the main reason I'm the person I am today.

For me, my left and right brain work together. Most of the things I find fun these days involve calculations and scientific discovery, but I also understand logically the desire to have oreos or do wild things once in a while. I've never really experienced much conflict of those two sides because as I've grown older I've adjusted my interests accordingly, and what I couldn't adjust I have considered and justified the desire for. I've allowed my interests to grow right along with me. Where I used to pretend to be a super hero or a secret agent, I now write stories. Where I used to enjoy mostly salty or sugary snacks, I now sprinkle those in along savory foods. I used to run around and play tag, but now I learn about space and physics. I used to watch cartoons and play video games, and now I watch movies and anime and I still play video games because video games are awesome. I consider myself a more mature kid, and honestly I think that's what all adults are. Just many aren't willing to admit it or let themselves be that. Too many people are of the opinion that being an adult means they have to be responsible all of the time and not do silly things. I think it's getting better, though, thanks in no small part to the internet.

Not if it was taught at the college level, college kids can handle swear words (and almost EVERY other kid is hearing them at home already). [Said in the voice of Baymax] I have some concerns, I am DEEPLY concerned that you are using Thanos as your philosophical barometer. That dude's moral compass points due south. 14:20 The fact that you feel like you've got it under control, tells me your left brain is likely in the driver's seat most of the time. Keep in mind, this is the side in which we find the ego, so long as you are aware of "who" is at the helm you should be more prepared to hold it in check.

I think with the child vs adult part, emotional intelligence takes maturity that children don't have, so right brain is not necessarily your inner child, just your spontaneity, creativity, etc. Right carries the ability to recognize and express emotions in yourself and others. Then, right is made at left because left took over when right should be active in instances of risk taking that could have paid off but resulted in missed opportunities due to over analysis and keeping too much in when your emotions urge you to open up. It is a stifled life that forgets how to live. Then right has less joy and more apathy and anxiety which just puts left onto overdrive, causing a downward spiral.

You should look into videos (I have links) about people who have had their corpus callosum removed its the part of the brain that lets both hemispheres communicate with each other. Some people have to have it removed to stop seizures and things like that, and it's really crazy to watch how these people operate and you can actually see that their brains are disconnected it's like two people living in one body. And it also really proves the whole left brain right brain thing, because when they cover their right eye which is connected to the left brain they can read words and they can analyze stuff and then when they cover their left eye which is connected to the right brain they can draw a picture of whatever you showed them but they can't tell you what it was. I mean they can once its on the paper and the other brain sees it, but until then its abstract. I can give you a couple links to these videos if you want them, theyre the videos I was shown in psychology class

Love the connection to nf. You're right they are similar in that way. I think the difference is nf copes writes down, stops and holds his thoughts tight through music. He need(s) /ed music to stay sane while comedy for Bo Burnham is the thing causing his problems and driving him insane. That's why he needed the 5 year break and nf needs to continue doing what he's doing to get/stay better/well. Basically they are both struggling with mental health issues while the cure for one is causing the problem for the other. Both genius minds in the entertainment industry. And are my favorite artist and comedian. Thanks for reading xo

What Bo depicts is very similar to the reality of disassociative identity disorder. It starts from an imbalance in the brain's ability to express certain aspects of personality until those aspects become independent from each other, creating two separate personalities. At first, these remain part of the person; over time the personalities become so exclusive of each other they begin having contradictory thoughts. The brain does not like to process parallel thoughts that contradict each other, so it comes to the conclusion that these different aspects are actually separate people.
