Can I skip breakfast during intermittent fasting? Can I have weight loss with it? Can a person with type 2 diabetes skip breakfast etc? You will find answers here.

Here is my story. I am a type 2 diabetic taking no medications (so I watch what I eat very carefully, usually). I always eat breakfast. When I wake up, my fasting blood sugar is always much higher than I would like, usually between 120 and 145. After I eat breakfast, it is actually lower than it was before I ate. (It is at its lowest just before I eat lunch, usually in the mid-afternoon.) I usually get up around 10 AM and sometimes don't eat breakfast until noon. My typical breakfast is a tomato, a zucchini (or maybe bok choy), garlic, and spices stir-fried with 1/4 of a package of extra firm tofu, a piece of fruit (usually an apple or some kind of citrus or possibly berries), and either a muffin made primarily with almond flour and egg or 2 slices of toast made from a high fiber whole grain bread. If I'm not feeling hungry, I'll just have the muffin and some cottage cheese with fruit. On days when I have to run out the door early, to meet friends for walking, I will grab a small piece of fruit and a handful of nuts, or sometimes stop for a couple of fast food soft chicken tacos. (The tacos don't raise my blood sugar, probably because their consumption is followed by a 90 minute walk.) I'm wondering if getting up earlier (which would necessitate going to bed earlier as well) and eating breakfast earlier would be beneficial as it would reduce my high fasting blood sugar earlier. (It would also mean deviating from my natural circadian rhythm, which might have other consequences.) I guess I can experiment.

I do IF 6Xs a week & 24hr plus one day a week. And yes your blood sugar will rise as your body begins releasing stored glucose in the liver, pancreas, and muscles. To counter that, I exercise in a fasted state, and once or twice a week, I do a two hour aerobic session to force my body to learn how to be metabolically flexible in the use of glucose/glycogen and then switch to fat when there is no glycogen fuel. Been doing that since March 2021 and got really serious in June and continue. Just had a Doc appointment and my HbA1c has been 6.0 for six months. Diagnosed @11.9. Metabolic Syndrome was my nickname. My blood pressure has dropped to 100-116/50-60. My HDL, which I couldn't get above 50, has been over 90 since August 2021. I'm a 20plus year type 2, probably longer as at diagnoses, 2001, HbA1c was 11.9.Began exercising 2007; Certified Group Exercise Instructor 2018 but glucose control was achieved in 2010 but never came down to prediabetes level. HBP, cholesterol remained with meds and Visceral Fat WOULD NOT BUDGE. Not until 2020 under lockdown when I switched to Moderate Intensity aerobics that my visceral fat began coming down. Then unintentionally on an empty stomach March of 2021 and things start to reverse ( Insulin levels dropped?). Visceral Fat disappeared completely, blood pressure dropped and I got my first pre-diabetic HbA1c of 6 Nov 2021.

I am T2D. I fasted 23 hours a day for two days a week eating only breakfast for ten weeks. At my desired weight and correcting my blood sugar a great deal I started eating three meals a day. Wanting to lower my blood sugar to non T2D levels I tried skipping a meal a day. Skipping breakfast and lunch raised my blood sugar levels. Skipping dinner worked but it caused me to lose strength and stamina over a couple of weeks. I now eat three meals a day following a lot of SugarMD advice and watching my portions. I feel better and my Blood sugars are now stable and below pre-diabetic levels with my weigh staying at my desired level. Skipping breakfast did not work for me. Three meals a day and a 13/15 hour fasting each night works great for me for the last six months. Thanks Dr. Ergin for your work. Your book "The Ultimate Diabetes Book" was a must read for me!

It’s taking some looking going through good information and bad information on KZfaq but I’m finally whittling it down to a couple channels including yours that are really helpful and not just trying to sell a bunch of stuff.I really appreciate what you’re doing with all the information from your expertise! I just was recently diagnosed with type two diabetes I immediately dove in to get as much information as I could about changing my diet which wasn’t too bad previously but needed to focus on low carbs no sugar or as I call it no sugar low carbs to no carbs. The main problem I found with a diet change is trying to keep filled up. When I was growing upI was known as a sweet potato kid.

With breakfast I take 250 mg benfotiamine, 5000IU Vitamin D3, 54 mcg Vitamin K2. With this regimin I am very stable and cool until lunch at 2pm. My lunch contains 15 grams carbs. Evening dinner also 15 grams carbs. Meat, eggs, cheese, green leafy vegetables, makes me more stable throughout the day. I take only 500 mg metformin Sustained release at 9Pm. My HbA1C ranges from 6 to 6.8. I am learning lot of valuable information from your valuable channel. Thanks a lot

I suffer from Dawn Effect and by eight in the morning sometimes my blood sugar is approaching 170 or so. At about 6 in the morning it will only be around 100 to 110. If I skip breakfast my blood sugar continues to rise and will be around 200 by noon. If I eat breakfast it stops my blood sugar from continuing to rise and is actually fairly reasonable at noon, often about 120 or so.

I did keto in 2017 and was able to get off all medication for a year and lost 90 pounds, I’ve kept it off to the pound…I need to lose more but mental health got in the way. Anyway, I did intermittent fasting and wouldn’t eat until around 11or later. My numbers were high in the morning, but once I ate, eggs, meat, whatever, the numbers would drop. I wish I had the willpower to eat that low of carbs, but it’s hard, but it was the best thing I have ever done, I wish more people would learn to eat to their meter. The Drs I’ve been to, have no idea about nutrition, I had to go to a chiropractor to get me on the right path. Thank you for helping inform people.

If you are diabetic and doing 16:8 intermittent fasting, which meal do you skip? Breakfast, lunch or dinner. Intuition tells me to skip dinner or meal before you go bed. Go to bed on an empty stomach. So it's breakfast, lunch but very light dinner, the opposite of what I have been doing all my life!!!

Before being diagnosed with Diabetes I would always skip breakfast, but as a Diabetic it is the meal I cannot skip, I can skip dinner but not breakfast. I need to take my Meds with food. Whenever I have to go for a test such as AIC, I try to be the first appointment, between 6:30am to 7:30am, and Eat right after my blood test.

I started skipping breakfast in order to keep all of my eating within an 8-hour window each day after being diagnosed type 2 in July. Since that time (with zero diabetes meds), I've dropped my A1c from 7.9% to 5.8%, my triglycerides from 280 to 71, and my liver lab values back into normal ranges (ALT from 85 down to 35 and AST from 46 to 16). I take my usual supplements and medications in the morning with water (atenolol, potassium, vitamin D). My fasting sugar this morning was 88, but I'm sure some of these benefits (down 59# as well) are also related to the removal of all added sugars, grains, and the starchy veggies (potatoes, corn, etc...) from my diet.

@@gused82 I am flexible about it. Some days, if I'm particularly hungry in the morning, I may switch my 11 am to 7 pm eating window around to where it's more like 9 to 5. I eat breakfast at noon, and supper at 6:00. I started this when I was told to go on a 1000 cal/day diet…that’s not enough calories for three satisfactory meals! I’m no longer so restricted, but it still works for me. Labs are good. A1C is good. I don’t consider myself a breakfast “skipper”, rather I eat a “late” breakfast.

I don’t eat breakfast , but I make sure I eat at least 3 eggs at lunch on a salad with olive oil and apple cider vinegar . I check my blood sugar 2 hours after lunch and it seems ok . If I skip breakfast and just have 2 cups of coffee ,my blood tests show high around 9:30- 10:00 am . Then at lunch an hour later seems ok . I can’t give up the coffee. Why does it spike so high after the coffee, but comes down by lunch ! TIA

I had to laugh because when I started to watch this video I realised that I had indeed forgotten to take my morning med and it’s now 5pm! I am new to dealing with diabetes and actually am finding it easier to not eat anything than trying to figure out what to eat and I’ve lost a few lbs with quite a few more needed to lose. I checked my blood the other day before dinner and my reading was 4.4 so I was happy about that.

Hello Dr. I am new to diabetes and I still do not understand it at all. I was pre-diabetic for 3 years and then last summer my A1C went up to 7.4. My dr put me on metformin (which I'm completely against that drug) and she wanted me to take one every day. Well I didn't and the reason I didn't was because my sugar wasn't getting high enough to take one...However, when it did spike, depending on how high it was depended on whether I took a whole pill or a half one. The side effects are absolutely horrible. However, as far as breakfast goes...I have never been a breakfast eater my entire life, and that's because I'm not a morning person either. I will throw up if I try to get up and eat breakfast at 7:30 or 8 am...but when I do get up, I have prepared in one bowl, a cup of oatmeal, a cup of greek yogurt, and mix it up with almond milk, and then I have a boiled egg to go with it. So it's not at a "breakfast time" but if I eat that's usually what i eat. Most of the time, I don't have time to eat anything. I'm taking care of my dad and I just get up and try to wake up and then leave to go help him and his wife..You are right about "forgetting medications"....I have other meds that I have to take every day...mornings---300 mg of lithium with 40 mg of omeprozole, with 300 mg. of gabapentin, with 10 mg of valium...those I take in the mornings or when I get up...I have to take the valium up to 4 times a day, the gabapentin, i gotta get 5 of them in a day, and the lithium, its 300 mg in the morning, 150 mg sometime later on in the day and 300 mg at bedtime...Nothing has been made clear to me about how to take the metformin, so i don't unless I have to...I heard you say something about 30 grams of carbs? My dietician has told me that I have to have 45 grams of carbs in every meal with the exception of snacks and that's supposed to be 15 grams...I'm sorry Dr. but I am just so confused. Now I've had really bad teeth which was causing very bad infection and I know that was spiking my sugar and I do have a lot of stress..However, I had all my teeth removed about 3 weeks ago and my sugar has not spiked one time since. So, I'm unclear about the metformin...I'm not gonna take it if my sugar is 101-109 which is where it's been because the metformin will drop me like a rock if i do...so idk why she wants me to take one every day when I don't feel i need it...and I don't eat breakfast for the reasons I told you...I just can't do it..I know I need to eat better than I am, but when I eat I eat what I'm supposed to...olive oil and all...Thank you for listening...I"m sorry this was so long, and thank you for sharing your video...I learn more here than I do out here....You have a blessed day...:)

I couldn't find any breakfast I can eat without a big spike in my glucose. I usually have high carb glucose such as toast and cereal/oats. After wearing a CMG I released how high they spike my glucose (200~), so I start trying lower carb options such as eggs on wholegrain toast, chiaseed pudding etc. They still spike my glucose, slightly better than cereal, but still more than 160. I even tried low Protein pancake (35g protein no 1.5g carb) , that still spiked to 150! (I'm trying to keep breakfast below 140) I have no idea what I'm supposed to eat anymore :(

Dear Dr, I watch you everyday, you are the one I trust the most. I will try to follow all of your instructions. However, I have one big problem. I am 59 yr old, type 2 diabetic and only 100 lb. My biggest issue is that I cannot afford the strips needed to keep track of my sugars. Can you please advise me on how I may be able to access these without the $100.00+ a month cost? I am desperate, with 4 limbs in serious neuropathy and my weight going down. I plead with you to point out how I can find a way to get the strips. I live far under the poverty line ($640. A month) and my meds are at $220. A month. I am backpeddaling at the moment because I have rent and animals to feed. Any advice???
