Summer of (family) love: tiny home VW-roadtrip documentary

Last summer, life handed us a roadtrip: we had tiny homes to film along the West Coast and while we don't own a car, someone was selling our dream rig - a vintage Westfalia campervan - cheap on Craigslist. It was the ideal setup for filming stories across three states (California, Oregon, Washington), but, above all, this was a chance to find out what we really needed to live well.
Limiting ourselves to one backpack per person, our family of five moved into our 50-square-foot mobile home. We hit the road determined to cook all our own meals (propane stove & refrigerator included) and to create our home every night in a different location (RV parks not included).
With no advanced reservations and only interviews to guide us, we visited the homes of regulars in the tiny house world, like Dee Williams (Olympia, WA), Tammy and Logan (Chico, CA) and Steve Sauer (DIY microapartment in Seattle, WA). We stopped at America's first tiny house hotel (Portland, OR), a treehouse "treesort" (Takilma, OR) and a surfer's roadside workshop and meditation space (milepost 24, Hwy 101, Seaside, OR).
We explored forest bathing in old growth redwood groves and Olympic Peninsula rainforest/lakefront, pushed the limits of "freedom to roam" (the Swedish Allmansrätten), tested the reality of camping at Walmart, mingled with accidental pantheists and confronted our own philosophies of life when the essentials of life aren't taken for granted.

I’m living here in an apartment in New York City. Coronavirus is everywhere. I really admire your lifestyle. You are living and adventurous life. You have the freedom to come and go as you want and living your life. I know it comes with challenges but at the same time those memories that you are instilling in your children are priceless!

No, this family has been forced to rationalize that poverty is the new norm! 5 people Living in a beat up car and parking in the Wallmart's parking lot for the night is not living. We are poor, America. Look where our children are growing up; soon we have to wash up in Macdonald; bathe in the river and be grateful. And who is this philosopher who is asking us to look on the bright side of poverty or "calmness within us?!" Yeah, it's going to require a lot of calmness to look for a new place to sleep! We are enslaved by the SUPER RICH and told to get used to it. Are we going to put up with this new "liberty?"

Dear Mrs. Kristen both my husband and I just came back from of road trip up to Oregon. Your videos which I’ve been watching for a while now, encouraged us, specially the video of your journey with your family, that less is more and the important message behind traveling it’s not the size of our luggage but the size of the sceneries. It’s amazing beautiful what happens when we get out of our comfort zone and put the material things aside. We camped in our rental van. We camped in area that we never image. As I write this posting my eyes get fill with tears of joy of all the beauty that mother nature gives us to enjoy. All through the northern part of California and Oregon we saw so much beauty so much nature, rivers, water cascade, lagoons, pine trees, and country sides roads with sheep and cows. In parts of Northern California I saw what I’ve been watching in your videos of people living in small spaces it was beautiful. Not staying in a hotel made me open my mind to a new way of exploring travel like I said less is more. Oh did I forget to mention that we took our little dog with us he too enjoyed himself. Thank you for your videos.

I was watching KZfaq videos about mobile homes. Snoozed for a while while those videos were playing and woke up with this video. Watched the full content and appreciated that it was not interrupted with ads. An engaging content, wonderful narrative and interesting places. Love how kids were very adaptive and happy. Your voices are soothing and the sound, even the breathing of the kids are so clear. Thank you!

I love that - “you can be your worst you or your best you every moment”. Simple words and easily understood. Everyone knows that, but it is much more difficult than it should be to apply what you know moment to moment in your life. Something we should all strive for. Be our best selves in this moment. Thank you for expressing that so well.

What a great movie! We did a tent-camping/driving/bicycling 7 week trip with two kids in the late 90's. It was so much like your experience. My grown daughters still speak of it with such fondness. We all found it hard to move back into our home with walls and plumbing... It's such a freedom to live on the road in a wee "house." Thank you so much for sharing your journey!

This is outstanding. Love it. When I was a kid in the 70s we had a starcraft pop up camper. Those are some of the best times. When I was in my late teens my friend had a VW camper. I was close to buying one myself but my mechanic brother advised against the year & model. It was an 84 westy. This video has me seriously considering getting one.

Kirsten, this a beautiful film. Thank you so very much for sharing your family and your journey. You are inspiring. I loved all your clips before you piste the whole video and it was even better to see it all together. You have such beautiful, intelligent and curious children. And so well behaved. You and your husband are not only artists but amazing parents (and people in general). I have been follows you for over a year and it's so inspiring to see the lives you visit an the ideas you have shared about living. I do think less is best so you can value what's really important. Until I started following you I thought our 700sqft (w full finished basement) was entirely too small for a family of 4. But now I completely appreciate and eventually want to downsize more and make it to the west coast. Thank you again for your time, energy and creativity you share with your channel. I love it and always look forward to new (inspiring) uploads. Take care. Namaste. Love.

I watched the whole documentary of your summer and it brought tears to my eyes. Bravo. When your daughter was crying about wanting to go home and you said to her that she will repent of that when she views this film when she is older.... How true. Time stands still for no one. It reminded me of the times I brought my daughter to the beach when she was young. Some of my greatest memories was just listening to the ocean and searching for shells with her. Now she is 32 and we basically do nothing together except eat once in a while. We both just work work work. This film is for people like me who slow down for nothing because of bills and debt. Your beautiful film caused me to pause. Pause and remember just what is important and just what do we really need to be happy? Relationship with people is far the best choice after basic needs are met. I do not fault anyone who has found their pot of gold by hard work and want big or more. It is your choice in the United States of America still and hopefully for years to come-forever. That choice is what our forefathers fought for, God Bless America! But for myself who's husband left many years ago for chasing tale and left me with a baby and no money, my choice was to work work work. And I thank God that I could and still can. It just seems that the economy and consumerism is against small people. And this film reminds us that the piece of the pie for us is freedom, not things.

Best two hours I have spent watching anything in a long time. Brought back some great memories of places we have been that you went on this trip. Great photography and narration. Loved seeing Dad doing the cooking, and how the children were allowed to discover the world around them as they wanted to. Loved all the people you met, and how you explained what it was like to live in such a small space as a family of five. Loved how you incorporated Japanese as well as western philosophical views in the narration. Hope this inspires others to try something new.....

The first thing that I can say is beautiful... and soooo inspiring... I've been following your work, Kirsten, and I'm really amazed by you reminding all of the practical return to the original philosophy of man. This is the ultimate cure for this twisted world and its regaining back the right shape once again. Only by having in mind the basic postulations of this philosophy - true values such as family, living in harmony with nature (in us and around us) and living with only what you need, we are equipped to go back and make our existence on this Earth meaningful. Once again, a big BRAVO and greetings to you and your adorable family from a far away Serbia..

No question about the advantages of houses (some houses) and the ones of apartments (some apartments). Difficult to compare apartments with apartments (one should consider location, city, family status, income, etc.) and houses (again, not the same a house surrounded by a vibrant community & nearby interesting spots than other realities). The general idea of a "house + backyard" is sometimes considered superior to that of one apartment; I do think it depends. Opportunities, access to services & education + pervasive in important cities; some of these cities have good transportation, parks, etc. "Apartment + good park nearby" can be a great combination. Important topic, as the world becomes more urban and some rural areas offer living alternatives that should be considered (specially with lack of proper work offers in cities, such as it happens in southern Europe). Thanks for your comment.

My grandparents were school teachers so we spent every summer with them. They had this pop top VW van. We made this same trip. Starting from Oklahoma through Grand Canyon Las Vegas California Up to Oregon Washington and Canada and then back down through Yellowstone to Oklahoma. 3 months of KOA and national parks. It was in the 80s. We listen to big band 80 track tapes all the way there. That was torturous but beautiful country we live in. Pray we don’t destroy it.

Now after the stress of finishing grad school and recently starting a new job I had a craving for your old videos that I had seen at that time several years ago and was thrilled to find out there are so many more. My whole life as an adult including college and grad school, and my current job now, have been working on a slow but steady plan to save enough money to build something small and easy to live in like the places and people you document here. Just a few more years and I can finally live rent free. Such a fan of your work!

It was really nice to see your and your husband's thought processes as you traveled from one interview to another, and I'm so impressed you were able to do this with such young kids. As someone else commented, I've noticed a difference in how you perceive tiny homes as well, in your videos. It's really great to see why people are doing things the way they are, and to know that you don't have to always follow the norm of what is expected. Rather, it's better to follow your heart. And I loved to hear that this was outside your comfort zone. I think I would be the same way, stressed about where to stay each night. But like you said, you can make a home anywhere. Loved this video, thank you.

I have watched this several times. It inspires me to do a journey of these sorts in my 50's. I would love to have a partner but am content on doing it alone. Everything was beautiful. Thank You for letting us in see the amazing earth through your lens. . p.s. Your son "always" found his way. I loved how independent he was and his crawling abilities are top notch. A FOLLOW UP would be nice. Love & Soul from Atlanta

It's amazing that we survived in the 60's as kids. Five kids plus mom and dad in a 64 Rambler 660 Classic. Dad smoked. We didn't use seat belts or car seats. We lived within our means! A novel practice so little people practice. Especially our government. Nice Video. But don't dis the big motor home because that would be how I would fly...but that would be my only home!

In 1959 came from Wisconsin to California (permanent move), five kids, mom and dad, and a cat. Drove (dad was only driver) a 1959 Rambler and did it in summer. And dad smoked, after we got to California the cars front right wheel fell off, and never saw it again.

Even though I already saw footage of the small homes that were feature it was still nice to see it in a big cohesive documentary. I really enjoyed watching it. I can't believe this took over just one summer though. Your children seem to grow so much over the few months.

Thank you for this beautiful piece of documentation you've made and share. I've a family of five and often I wondered could we do this too. It made me very thoughtful. Regularly I enjoy videos from your channel very much. But this movie was in a way awesome and touching, I've never expected it. All the blessings for you and your family.

I watched this when it was originally posted and thought it was great. Watching it again now, it’s even better. It may be that my nephews being of similar ages to the kids therein makes it resonate more.

Thanks for putting the vid together, now I know the lady behind the voice of so many tiny home tours. One thing I thought was special as a family unit was that other then say "don't touch the fire, it's real", I never heard the word "no" spoken to the kids. Go explore, learn, live. That was great.

Probably a cultural difference. I do use "don't" sometimes, specially when it's dangerous for them. I think if one doesn't abuse the mandatorial "don't", then when used it can help prevent accidents. Most of the times conscious about its use and potential repercusions.

I love all your videos. This one, and the one that tells of how you began documenting the 'tiny' movement especially. I recommend your videos to people I meet weekly. I'm working on a project of my own and dream of the day I can invite your family to visit. Keep up the inspiring work! Thank you

Beautiful story and it’s so encouraging and it raises awareness less is more. Like always thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

In 1978, my family (mom, dad, older sister, and I) took a 2-month summer road trip from Wisconsin out to the Rockies (Colorado, Arizona, NM, & Wyoming) in a 1973 VW bus. Although I was only 5 and my sister 8, that trip contains some of the best memories of my life. Now as an adult, I hope to (someday - sooner vs later) recreate that magic on a road trip with my husband and dogs. Thank you so much for this amazing and thought-provoking film!

No, it is not legal in Australia to ride and one of the reasons are the fatalities. As a matter of fact there was one last week. I did not expected a reply like this from you, a shame really, dDork means social inept person, which suit you very well if we add ignorant, irresponsible and few more adjectives going by your reply.
