In this video, I revisit oil pastels again with my brand new Sennelier landscape 24 set! I am very excited to share this with you guys because I had soo much fun trying these out!
Keep in mind, as an artist who is not very experienced with oil pastels, this is meant to be more of a first impressions/swatching type of review rather than an informative, comprehensive review. I want to share with you guys the first artwork I created with this set and my thoughts along with it in this video. I hope you enjoy!
Sennelier has multiple assortments of sets of oil pastels, and maybe I will try out another one and buy more colors in the future!

You should combine the Derwent Drawing with the Oil Pastels. Both are rich and creamy. I enjoy oil pastels very much on Pastelmat and I use waxed based colored pencils for fine details. I don't use my fingers much...use tortillions and I do use paint thinner and a brush when I want a smooth passage like for a sky.

That's a really good idea! The derwent drawing have a palette that works nicely with this one. I am going to experiment with different methods of blending these guys:)

You can blend them with blending stumps or cotton swabs. You don't need solvents. I can't use solvents either so I blend them with blending stumps.

In case you want to blend them to make a paint effect and you don't want to use solvents, a little bit of linseed oil works like a charm too. Of course you would need a primed surface so the oil doesn't seep but it really makes it look like thin oil paint.

Wow! Alexis! I love it so much! I had heard of these Sennelier oil pastels but had never seen how they worked. They're very pigmented, and soft...🤔 I think, I can try it, in a future.

It turned out to be so pretty. The smoothness of the oil pastels was really fun to watch. I got rid of all my chalk pastels, but I did keep my oil ones. I'll try them again eventually...

Thank you, I loved how these look with the texture and I'm excited to try blending them out in a piece next time also. I like these better than chalk pastels

If you're finding that using a smelly medium with the oil pastels walnut oil works really well. Leave it for at least 7 days then use a spray varnish or fixative like kyrlon or sennelier have one as well, and it help your painting to look even more luscious and it's protected against the elements like heat and light. One good reason to use a varnish is that most will protect the painting from uv light, and most are archival, so that's great for longevity, and it's also good to put them behind glass but if it's varnished it's not absolutely necessary but I like to do that it really makes them look special. I've worked for many years with oil pastels and dry pastels, and unfortunately the oil pastels are still not taken seriously as a painting medium and are often referred to as crayons, they are actually paint with extra wax. You can do quite exciting artwork with the oil pastel and the vibrancy of them is quite beautiful. The youtube channel Black bean does quirky portraits he's worth a look at, there are a few like Monet Cafe but she's not exclusively oil pastel. You can use them on pretty much anything, paper, canvas or board, I liked your little practise painting, have fun exploring with oil pastels they are great to work with they're oil paint in a stick shape. Cheers!

Thank you for the advice, walnut oil is noted and I actually do have a spray varnish I just have not used it with pastels yet. Its a shame the pastels are not always taken seriously, I think they are gorgeous and fun to use. I prefer them maybe to soft pastels because those produce SO much dust. Thanks for your helpful and lovely comment:)

@@AlexisCassandraArt thank you for a reply, yes I like the squishyness of oil pastels, but I do use both just depends what the subject is. I'm glad you found some useful information in my post thank you for reading it, the varnish really does give it that extra bit of pizzaz! Cheers!

The end result looks lovely! Kudos to you for managing to not muddy the colours, that's always a problem I have with oil pastels haha

Thank you! I was being extra careful with them because of how soft they were-I knew it would be easy to muddy them!

Never tried these oil pastels they look so nice. I like how your landscape turned out, some areas a bit smoother and some showing the white of the paper. It creates really nice effect.

The first thing I said when using these is “It’s just like drawing with lipstick!” 😂 Aren’t they just the softest pastels ever. The landscape set is a really nice palette of colours. Your artwork is lovely! I like that you left a bit of texture, it works well for this picture. Yes, they’ll blend out with solvents, but also any oil will work (like linseed etc). Other useful tools include makeup sponges, either the little wedges or the funny shaped beauty blenders; they are great for blending pastels!

Thank you! They are super soft, I love them! After all of these comments, I'm probably going to try and use a beauty blender or blending stump rather than solvents😆

I am on a journey of trying brands with oil pastels. I have become obsessed with them since I rescued my old non brand set from when I was a kid, to try and follow a tutorial. They didn't work at all like the ones in the video so I started investigating and I bought some pentels. I was amazed at the quality difference and then I discovered that there were even better brands. I bought Van Goghs that are good for the prize for base layers, at least in my country, I've seen them be way too expensive for the quality in the US. Then I bought the mungyos which I loved the creaminess and opaqueness they have, but hated the colors because they all look to be made with white pigment. So ended up coming to sennelier and neocolors. I bought a couple of singles from each brand and I fell in love with both for different characteristics so I am saving to get a set of each.

I have heard the Van Goghs are nice also, but yes, quite expensive I think! I am glad you ended up with Sennelier, I really recommend them , the sets are such nice quality in their packaging as well. I'm excited for you when you do buy a set!

That was a great idea to use color pencils for the castle in the middle. Your painting with the white paper peeping through looks gorgeous, I always want to cover the entire surface covered with some colors, but definitely I've learned something here from your approach. You didn't mention spraying the final piece with fixative. Even totally human friendly hairspray works great to completely eliminate tackyness. Sennelier oil pastels are brutally expensive, so i prefer using them on 24 x 32 cm max. I recently painted a 30 x 40 cm and half of my raw umber stick - which i used for background - was consumed. 😂

Thank you! With this piece, I realized that a grainy texture is okay sometimes! You're right-I need to go back and fix a lot of my pieces with spray, which I do have but get lazy to use unless I am selling. Poor raw umber😆
