I agree with what Pat's talking about in regards to the baby. Bethesda assumed people would just automatically give more than half a shit about this random baby you'd had minimal interaction with. At least in Fallout 3 you spoke to your dad before not caring what happened to him.

In Megaton's defense they DO have the one cow, so that certainly helped them survive when the Super Duper Mart needed new shipments after the nuclear apocalypse.
@ProjectNathaniel
@ProjectNathaniel 7 жыл бұрын
In Megaton's defence, that's not the point of the quest given. The literal dialogue given is "I need to know if a place like that still has any food or medicine left in it." Megaton doesn't get by on the scraps of the pre-war world, it's one of the major stopping points for the trade caravans, and most shops there sell randomly generated food that would come from animal and market alike. Pat misremembering things does not a poor game make.
@EkkieEkk
@EkkieEkk 7 жыл бұрын
Kain trade still doesn't really explain much when you consider that there isn't a single safe trade route in the game, and megaton really doesn't have anything to trade.
@ProjectNathaniel
@ProjectNathaniel 7 жыл бұрын
There's no safe trade routes in any of the games, but that's why every single caravan have guards. And even then, there's a very established trade route in spite of its own safety. As for having stuff to trade, that's a fault of the game not giving way to much idea of an economy beyond scavenging.
@CZEFrank
@CZEFrank 7 жыл бұрын
Kain You're right, Pat is misremembering, it's not as bad as he said, it's even worse. They have no means of food production at all. I'd be interested in what they trade for with the caravans. They produce nothing other than clean water, which is such a vital part of their economy they relegated the entire operation to one elderly man. What does the rest of the town, other than the shop keepers do? Do they scavange? Have they survived for 200 years by training salvaged materials for food? Apparently not because the water treatment guy needs the player to bring them the scrap metal needed for maintenance. According to the wiki, the main source of their food is Cantebury Commons. If they survive on trade alone, why don't they even bother to run their own food caravans?
@ProjectNathaniel
@ProjectNathaniel 7 жыл бұрын
Coz it wouldn't be worth it, probably. Getting a sturdy brahmin, a merchant, and guards to wander the Wasteland is risky business. I mean, even Canterbury Commons ones can just perish out in the wilderness. What chance do the sick few of Megaton have?

I cared about my father in 3, because you sorta grow up with him (also he's Liam Neeson). In 4, I cared a little for my wife in the beginning because I thought the work I put fiddling with her appearance meant that she'd stick around for a while. But then it comes to the baby. I didn't care about the baby AT ALL. No connection. I feel like they could have changed ONE thing in 4 that would have made people actually connect with the kid. You know that long list of names you can pick for your character that only one NPC actually uses? Yeah, take that list and let you PICK your kid's name along with their gender. Then just have YOUR character say that name when they refer to them. It's more or less the same amount of voice acting and gives you some CONNECTION to the kid. I feel that that would have made a world of difference with the main story...

For what Pat was saying about the stupid first mission in Fallout 3, that's something I loved in FNV. There's relatively little pre-war food (and you can explain it away that maybe House is producing some of it still lmao) and there are farms and ranches fucking everywhere. You can actually see a progression of life going on centuries after the end of the damn world, when in 3 and 4 things felt very stalled to me (esp 3). But yeah, FNV2 would make me jizz myself holy shit dude

I care about the baby... In Super Metroid.
@PregnantWhale3000
@PregnantWhale3000 6 жыл бұрын
TheLawliet10 actually fucking yeah! Baby metroid is/was a far more compelling MacGuffin and Character than Baby Shaun. But why is that? It's been a while since I played Super Metroid (my first Metroid) and I honestly felt angry at Ridley for fucking with my Metroid-baby. For some fucking reason: Babby-Shoggoth had a far more interesting emotional connection to Samus that was introduced in the Intro of Super Metroid which had a fOcus on the consequences of Metroid's ending. For those who do not know, The eponymous Metroid, saves Samus Aran at the end of the first game. Allowing Samus to finish off that games baddy. With the intro cinematic of Super Metroid being a prolonged rushing to the hospital scene with monologues by Samus. Creating a sense of gratitude for both characters, and perhaps a little bit of guilt with Samus remarking that the baby Metroid clung to her "like a mother". Thereby invoking a sense of vulnerability on the part of what was initially thought to be an aggressive bio weapon created by aliens that were purely parasitic. Thereby reversing every notion we the player and Samus ever had about the nature of Metroid's. From there, Samus Aran spares baby Metroid, an act of mercy by a characteristically efficient and badass space bounty hunter. Making her in turn more empathetic. All of which was achieved in like 5 minutes. Fallout 4's intro did not really manage to achieve the same effect. Even though our SO was met and got shot, our baby was kidnapped, we saw our lives become irrevocably changes, and pushed into a strange new world. It had all the similar concepts as Super Metroid but failed or at least lessened its effect due to classic Quest prompt syndrome. The thing that distracts the player from the main plot in most RPGs and limits the urgency of the plot. Within 25 minutes, I as the player, am more interested in getting some cool gameplay stuff than I am in getting my child back. 200 years have passed

I think Fallout 3 and 4 could have been vastly improved if they didn't take place over 200 years after the bombs fell. Most of the problems (lack of crops, the DC wasteland having no fucking greenery outside of Oasis, etc.) could be less blatant if it took place earlier. I would have been totally fine if FO3 took place the same year as Fallout 1

When Skyrim came out, I was utterly baffled by how big the world was and how much to explore there was. But at the same time, I always called out how unbelievably tiny and shitty the "cities" look like and how dumbed down the guilds were (just compare the thieves guild in both games. You don't actually steal a single fucking thing in Skyrim) It always feels like Bethesda improves a lot in certain aspects, but takes steps backwards in others with their open world games.

I think that's what Fallout 4 wanted to say all along, 'Just because he's my son and blood doesn't mean I should care at all for him' I barely spend time/ got to know him, thus should I care about him and his dream?' Yes or No - Institute vs BoS -Yes, because he's my son, family first, everyone else, second -No, Being the biological father doesn't mean anything if you don't get to be with your son for his entire life I actually got a bit of a concept of, oh in real life, what would you do if you really had a real son born from your wife's womb? then gets stolen and grew up, in real life concept, would you really kill him? The problem here is the ending, you side with him, he dies, you won't side with him, he dies. fuck your decision then

5:05 Pat is super wrong about that. That quest is the first Wasteland Survival Guide sidequest from Moira Brown. She wants you to see if supermarkets are a viable source of food (and optionally medicine, I think.) There's literally no food on the shelves and I think the only scraps of food and medicine(?) are in a locked storage closet. Megaton survives off of trading. They have a giant water pump and they trade excess water from said pump, food from brahmin, and hotel rooms, as well as scrap materials to survive as a town. Edit: I can't fucking believe he just said there's no farm animals. THERE'S LITERALLY TWO BRAHMIN DIRECTLY ON THE MAIN PATH OF THE TOWN. They're in front of the clinic and restaurant. They're straight forward from the entrance. Impossible to miss.

In order 1. It's easier to cross the country in the post apocalypse than Pat thinks. It happens constantly. Kellogg, Lyons's BOS, Autumn's Enclave, Harold. 2. Nope, what you say during Lonesome Road has no affect on what happened at the Divide. Chris Avellone shoves the Courier's backstory down your throat even if you already had a backstory for said Courier. Ulysses may be lying, but according to him and Chris your still some asshole from California whose been traveling around for a good long time. Doesn't matter if your from a vault, from back east, an android, an amnesiac, or whatever. The Courier is still a well traveled wanderer. I hate Lonesome Road the most of all New Vegas dlc. 3. Yeah, which faction you sided with will have Ulysses judge you by. Great variety for all four of them. You never get to call him out on his pettiness or his ego or just tell him you don't care. My courier for instance would have just said, "it was just a job. I don't care if this was your home. It's not mine nor has it ever been. I'm from New Arroyo, if i ever passed through here while looking for work it didn't even fucking register as a memory. So shut the fuck up Odysseus." 4. No they don't tell you they've been living off of the Super Duper Mart for the past 200 years. Moira Brown tells you go there and get some for a book. Researching for resources in dangerous environments. The case study being a local raider infested super market. 4. No one of the first mission is not "we're low on food go get us more food". The food situation in megaton is they trade for it from caravans. Megaton has a water purification system that not a great one but it works. Seeing how it runs on rain water and not the one your Dad will eventually make which runs on river water. 5. They have one brahmin. It's not great. 6. No theres not "food on shelves". The entire market is barren with only empty tin cans and a few boxes of bleach. The only food you find there was either locked up or put there after the war. The raiders were using the pharmacy as a supply cache which is probably why there still stuff back there. 7. "1950s Preservatives so they will stay fresh forever!" 8. Yeah those shipments from raider gangs over the corse of 200 years. Guarding that shit like a dragon guarding mountains of gold. 9. Tactical nukes were dropped on Washington which is why most of the buildings are still standing. But the Chinese carpet bombed DC with them. The City got hammered. The surrounding country was decimated. The world runs on 1950s science so the world can remain as wastelandy as Bethsoft wants it to remain. 10. What reason? Did you want money? Weapon? Powar? That's how the games judge you. 11. Todd Howard circa 2011, "We at bethesda like to say, 'you are who you play'." Me, circa 2016, "Yeah Todd I am, but I'm not a dad, a soldier, a woman, or a lawyer".

I disagree with the point of Fallout 3's (and 4's) ruins not being overgrown with shit or deserts. I personally love the suburban aesthetic and it's one of the few reasons why i always return to Fallout 3 over New Vegas despite the latter being a better game; I just prefer the smashed buildings with nothing but hostile things in it over the empty desert with cosplayers. Fallout for me, has been about exploration and rummaging around trash to build tools for survival out of them. Which to be completely honest, isn't what Fallout originally was about. The reason why Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas are so far in the future, is because they wanted to show what human civilizations look like in a hostile world after a total reset. That is certainly an intriguing concept, it's just not what I personally am into. I prefer my post apocalypse as a lone Wolf scrounging for food and ammunition. I couldn't care less about the depths and intrigues of tribes and communities with each other. I'm glad they exist, but I prefer them as a backdrop, rather than the focus.

I love me some New Vegas, but if I had to pick between the two in the atmosphere front...Bethesda does it better. NV feels like just some post apocalypse with Fallout homage. The world doesn't feel right, even with it being a location super close to the original game. Lonesome Road for example, those are modern nukes. Not 1950's pulp apocalypse atom bombs. The world only feels half right in regards to canon and setting. All that said, FO4 is a big ol' pile of elephant diarrhea, but at least it's diarrhea that stays with the original setting in feel.

Gilbals fallout 3s world feels like a post nuclear theme park, whereas new Vegas feels like an actual world trying to recover.

While you're right, the themepark crazy is thematically appropriate to the series. It's always had the wackiness

Gilbals wackiness and the world just plain not making sense are two different things. I describe 3 as a theme park because it doesn't feel like an actual world, it just feels like a bunch of post apocalyptic features and themes thrown together. Previous fallouts don't feel like that, they're much more cohesive.

Agreed Its why I love FO2 so much because it shows people really recovering from the destroyed world. Showing progress is always a plus. FO3 was always bizarre because in feels like FO1 in terms of progress and those that played FO2 could see people moving forward.

I have to disagree with you there. Only FO3 and FO4 feel like theme parks while the other games fell likes an actual world

Slightly unrelated opinion, but it bugs me immensely. I don't really think the Fallout games succeed at creating a depressive world. In fanfictions I've read, the world of Fallout is cruel and unrelenting. In the games it seems everyone's relatively healthy and happy.

Only Fallout 1 and 3 were super depressing. In all the other canon games people make what they can of their lives.

To be fair I've actually never played 2 0r 3, so this opinion is mainly based on Bethesda's stuff. If that isn't the intended vibe they're going for, that's fair enough

Not quite sure Fallout 1 was 100% going for the depressing vibe, but the brutal world in the game sure felt that way, with a few wierd jokes and references thrown out here and there. Fallout 2 could be brutal in some parts, and absolutely silly in other parts, and they added background noises that made the world not feel so desolate. The game didn't really portray it's world quite as bad as the first one, except in certain areas like New Reno. Fallout 3 was not subtle at all and wanted to show you how absolutely depressing living in the Capital Wasteland was.. New Vegas tried to be like Fallout 2, but they contained most of the silliness into the Wild Wasteland trait selectable at the beginning. New Vegas portrayed a more stable land that's still plauged by problems thanks to the NCR's incompetance and Mr Houses uncarringness. The people living in it are possibly on borrowed time due to the brutal Ceasars Legion preparing to war with the NCR, but they try to forget their troubles and make what they can of what they got. Fallout 4? I'm not sure what the hell they were trying to do with that, and I can't even begin to explain that world, other than they tried to portray hardship, but the also showed you that the people moved on, and the environment had all these wierd silly things scattered EVERYWHERE to the point where it ruined the atmosphere.

"Bethesda has a nasty habit of making you care about some family that isn't your real family" If the reason you don't care about them is because they're not your real family - not that Bethesda didn't make you care about them - then why do you care about the world that isn't your world? The life that isn't your life? The friends that aren't your friends? I get the complaints against Bethesda, but that one has little to no grounding. Even the argument that the baby isn't relevant to you is flawed. Why the fuck do you care about saving the Vault you just spawned in? Or being the Chosen One for a tribe you can barely interact with? "Fallout should be a guy that doesn't remember what happened and then you fill in the blanks" The thing is, that's not what Fallout is. Fallout 1 is a guy going out, saving a thing he has an emotional attachment to that you do not have an attachment to as the player, and then being told to fuck off. Fallout 2 is about you going and receiving a particular item to save a tribe that you do not have an attachment to as the player (unless you played Fallout 1) and then getting involved in the politics of the world around you at the same time. New Vegas is a massive swerve in another direction, and while it makes sense to prefer that style of RPG, that's not what Fallout is quintessentially. It's what New Vegas is.

The difference being that the original Fallout games (and New Vegas) had good enough writing that you BECAME emotionally invested in the characters and the narrative over time. Bethesda couldn't write itself out of a cardboard box, which is why everyone mentally checks out as soon as the game expects them to care about anything.
@ProjectNathaniel
@ProjectNathaniel 7 жыл бұрын
But that's stupid. If you mentally check out, then inherently you will think it's all stupid and poorly written, coz you're not paying it any mind. "Oh Bethesda can't write well, so I'm not gonna bother taking in their characters or story." Don't get me wrong, Fallout 4 isn't written well, and for the most part Fallout 3 rehashes the first two games plots, but that's not a bad thing. You care about the world in the same way you'd care about an actual post-apocalyptic world. New Vegas' stupid "everyone you spend a week with will divulge their entire life story to you" malarky is crippled even further by most of the characters being cookie-cutter personalities, and the few original ones being either missable, or flat out uninteresting. And hey, Fallout 3 at least gives you the option of not liking your dad. It's never stated you had to care about the guy, just that you chase him down, and logically speaking, that is a sensible reaction when confronted with something like the Wasteland, even if you hate your old man; he's familiarity, he's something grounded.

I'm sure the original games would be improved by every dialogue choice essentially being "Dude, where's my vault/tribe/dad/son" ceaselessly repeated throughout every single quest. I wonder why they don't force you to do that?
