Super Lube was the go-to back when I was in the fitness industry. We used it mainly to lube the guide rods on machines with a weight stack with nylon bushings. Stuff lasts a long time without gunking up. I bought out the local parts store and found out that Radio Shack had a private labeled tube of the Super Lube - exact same stuff in a white tube. And yes, Phil Wood is the only bike grease to use.

I use Lucas brand GUN OIL that has high viscosity and rust prevention properties in it. It is good for oiling the joints of pliers and putting a safety coat over the metal. Garages are notorious for being humid. Tools rust within years of purchase, regardless of quality. To me WD40 removes factory grease in joints and it is only a very temporary fix for sticking. Pliers need thin grease/oil that prevents rust as rusting joint is one of the hardest places to get the rust out of once it begins. I personally coat all my pliers from top to bottom with a thin layer of gun oil and then wipe them. No moisture is going to ruin my investments. Spend thousands on tools, just to watch them corrode? No thank you. If you turn off all the lights in your shop and garage, bright white led flashlights can point out rust on your tools better in that dark environment where you normally wouldn’t see it with the regular lights on.

Yes, Super Lube makes good stuff! Another old time mfg of both general purpose & specialty lubricants is 'Lubriplate. Many of their products are specified for aerospace & industrial applications... but other than small tubes of general purpose white grease, is rarely seen in stores... however it all can be had from most usual sources.

I keep a tube of Super Lube silicone grease in a Fat .50 Cal ammo can that is my trailer ball kit to grease the ball before dropping the hitch. Yes it’s pricy for silly trailer ball grease but it’s small and compact. I keep it in a one quart Zip-Loc bag with a few paper towels to wipe the ball clean when the trailer is unhitched. When at home I use a tub of Red N Tacky grease to grease the ball but when away the tube of Super Lube is always with me to keep a dry hitch from eating up my trailer ball. When the kids were little I used FDA food grade silicone grease and spray for their squeaky toys. Me, I grew up on 30w Gulf motor oil for all of my squeaky toys and it didn’t affect me.

Of course I forgot to mark which was which, but they all work well for plumbing and general lubrication, but the next time I load up a syringe I'm going to mark it. @lastbesttool
@lastbesttool Жыл бұрын
It does work, but too well. When I first tried it, I worked the pliers till they were perfect, but then when cleaning out the compound with WD40, it kept on grinding for a little more and then the plier joint wiggled. So it's best to stop well ahead of perfection and then work the compound out of the joint You can always do more, but you cannot go backwards.

The semiconductor industry commonly uses perfluoropolyether greases for many things. Low off-gassing in vacuum, low particle production, tighter viscosity control across a range of temps, chemical resistance, safe and non-reactive on many polymers, plus I’m sure a host of other properties as well. DuPont Krytox 205 is the “basic” version. Definitely a performance grease with a performance price. Oh right, decomposes and releases little hydrofluoric acid above 550F. It’s actually used a lot of surprising places but kinda one of those low key grease secrets. Mechanical keyboard junkies lube their keyboard switches with the 205 grade 0 for that extra smooth typing experience. Kluber is the European brand for pfpe greases. Both DuPont and Kluber have spec sheets for days if you want to get down the ultraperformance grease rabbit hole. All your lithium soap greases, moly, and graphite greases have pfpe versions. Cheers

@@rogerice3826 Yup, some of the cryogenic equipment I've used uses the stuff for bearings that need to operate down to -80C. The only pain with pfpe is really cleaning it off well. Resistant to acetone, MEK, ipa, water. Really just good old elbow grease and lots of clean rags.

Silicone greases are NOT suitable for metal to metal lubrication. You can use them for metal to rubber or metal to plastic or plastic to plastic or plastic to rubber. But silicone grease is not a metal to metal lubricant. It is still slippery but the metal will gall and wear quickly. Same goes for silicone spray. Not for metal to metal. Lots of people do not understand this. For people who know, dimethylpolysiloxane is like liquid rubber. It will not prevent steel from galling and wearing. Stop using it for the wrong purposes. ---Doozer

Super Lube is great stuff! Unfortunately, it is also stupidly expensive here in the UK - £10+ for one of those tubes - so I use it on small stuff like folding knives, flashlights, blowback air pistol slides, and also in ratchet heads, since that's what Snap-On supplies in its rebuild kits, and if it's good enough for Snap-On, it's good enough for me. I got a bulk deal a few years ago on some large bottles of Snap-On Spot Lube, which I suspect is the same as the thinner type of Super Lube - anyone have any info on that? WD-40 is not really much of a lubricant at all, it's a cleaner and water displacer - I never use it as a lube, more for cleaning things before applying a more substantial (higher viscosity) lube.

Both good questions. I’d usually suggest regular super lube for about everything but all the fishing reels I’ve opened had a thicker darker grease more like bearing grease. Might just be cost savings but it could be performance when wet. On the Guitar side, I assume the superlube would work fine but not sure how well it would play with nylon strings (pun intended).
