I’m digging into the Super Resolution feature Adobe recently launched in Adobe Camera RAW in this video. I’ll explain how to use it and share some tips you might not realise before diving into the pixels.
Wondering if the new Super Resolution mode is better than enlarging an image in Photoshop? Can Super Resolution compete with Topaz Gigapixel? I share my views in this video by making some detailed comparisons at 100% resolution.

Thanks Robin, this is the best analysis of Super Resolution I’ve see. I tried it on a heavily cropped bird photo and liked the result. Now I’m encouraged to try it on older lower-res photos.

Great to hear! I'm pleased you liked the video. I've also tried it on a 6MP Canon 300D RAW file and it will make an A2 print without problem.

That’s really impressive Robin and the fact it works on tiff files opens up all sorts of possibilities for film scans too. It does make you wonder if upgrading to high resolution cameras is really worth it these days.

Hi Steve, I was really impressed. I haven't tried it with a film scan yet but it will be interesting. I have done some enlargements of film scans using Gigapixel in the past and they were great. Hopefully this is the same.

Wow. Good analysis. My inclination has been toward being an Adobe-hater since they forced everybody to subscription mode, but this is a really impressive piece of technology that we just get for (sort-of) free. Kudos to them for this one.

Bravo Robin ich bin begeistert wie du es aufgeabeitet hast, you did a very good helpful job. It was interessting for me wit the combination with Topaz. In the peeping it looks a little better, but this peeping is not practicable. And for a quick workflow i try now this work in photoshop. So a very big thank to you. Greets from Stuttgart, Achim... and you are great fantastic BRAVO. Carry on

Quite instructive first look at Adobe's Super Resolution feature and what it can do. The engineers over at DxO should take a careful look at this and try to come up with something at least as capable if they want to stay at the cutting edge.

Thanks. I did try processing a RAW file to a DNG in PhotoLab and then resizing that with Super Resolution which worked extremely well. But I agree, it would be nice to see a simialr feature in DxO.

Thanks for the analysis Robin - the question I have is should you preferably use this feature at the beginning of your workflow or the end. Maybe it doesn't matter either way?
@RobinWhalley
@RobinWhalley 3 жыл бұрын
I think I would use it at the begining. I know I'm then working on a much larger image but there's a lower risk of creating artifacts in the editing that become visible when enlarged.

This is a timely video for me. I wanted to try the Super res feature in PS and worked on it last night. I usually round trip from Lightroom to PS and then back again. It took me 2 hours of surfing the web and trying things out before I cottoned on to the fact that you cannot do this at this time. When you open a file from LR in PS there is no filmstrip. No filmstrip means no access to the Enhance command. I had no idea there was a filmstrip in PS and it took me ages to discover that this only appears when you open an image from Bridge (or drag and drop an image into PS). I selected an image from Bridge and lo and behold, there was the filmstrip in PS. The super res feature in ACR is great (as you show in your video) but it is a painful process for someone like me who has an extensive LR catalogue and who accesses PS from LR. I looked at several videos and read quite a few articles on this new feature but Robin, you are the only one who mentioned the fact that you cannot do it from LR or indeed send the DNG file back to LR. In one of the articles I read, there was a suggestion that this feature will end up in LR eventually. Cant' wait!! Thanks again for all the information you provide on your website and in your excellent instructional videos.

Great to hear that it helped you. I suspect there are a lot of small tweaks that will come to light around what you can and can't do with Super Resolution. It's still relatively new but the Camera RAW team at Adobe published a long blog post about how it works and they seem to be working on more ideas. Exciting.

Thank you for your very informative video. Question: does this feature only works in RAW file? how about TIFF,PSD,PG etc files? Thank you..
@RobinWhalley
@RobinWhalley 2 жыл бұрын
You can use the feature on other image types. To do this you need to set the preferrences to pen that file type in ACR auotomatically. I'm sure I showed how to do this with a TIFF file later in the video.

For the comparison where you did Photoshop x2 what resize choice did you use? Preserve Details 2.0, Preserve Details, Bicubic Smoother, or one of the other resize options? Thank you. Good video!
@RobinWhalley

Thanks. When I did the Photoshop x2 I first tested all mehtods and the Preserve Details 2.0 appeared to be the best for the image. I then used that in the comparison.

Great video. Pleased that you also compared super resolution to Gigapixel AI, which I use, as I don't have Photoshop. Makes me wonder whether it is necessary for me to have a high res camera to print large; i currently use a 24mp Nikon Z6 which limits me to 24"x16" prints at 250ppi.
@RobinWhalley
@RobinWhalley 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You certainly don't need a high resolution camera to make convincing large prints. I have a 40" print which I created in Gigapixel. It comes from a 6Mpixel RAW file from a Canon 300D which was my first digital camera. The detail in the print looks amazing. I can imaging with a 24mp Nikon you would achieve excellent enlargements.

could you try that with a pentax pixel-shift raw file? please! ( I d do that myself but I am currently too broke to buy all that adobe stuff plus my laptops are junk so its pointless to even think about it)
@RobinWhalley
@RobinWhalley 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but I don't have space in my work schedule to test out different files for people. I have tried it with RAW files using Pixel Shift from a Panasonic G9. Some results are impressive but others I don't like much. You can see a sort of faint mesh pattern in some areas with lots of fine detail. I can also see some pixelation in areas. It looks like the application has tried to generate new detail but it hasn't worked well.

Check you are using the latest version of Photoshop CC. Open a RAW file in Photoshop and it should open in Adobe Camera RAW. If you then right click on the image but can’t see the enhanced option it may be a bug. It would be best to ask on the Adobe forum to see if any one else has the problem.

why to use this sub par method when there are tools like topaz gigapixel or topaz sharpen ai that produce much much better results and can be used with affinity photo so you dont even have to pay for photoshop subscription and their flawed software

you must actually be the person in your profile pic to post such a stupid comment. Affinity is trash and every complex software will have flaws. paying about 10 dollars a month is not much either if you're a professional. If its too expensive then use ig filters
