On this episode of OBD4Everyone we are going to do a speed test using the OBDLink SX scanner and an OTG (aka "on the go") cable on Android.
We will show you the sensor/PID read speed as shown in:
• OBDLink: Excellent and free program for OBDLink products.
• OBDFusion: $5 OBD app and worth every penny.
• Torque Pro: $5 OBD app and the OBD app everyone knows
AND show you how different apps, with the SAME OBD scanner and SAME Android tablet results in VERY DIFFERENT SPEEDS. To be honest, we were a little surprised at the difference.
This is THE FASTEST OBD scanner we have ever tested, by a long shot!!
(It even beat the test done in E21 from April 2021!!)
With to the reliable USB connection and the fast speed, this is my "go to" setup when I need to log a lot of sensor data (30+ PIDs) and I want to log it FAST.

Great Video. I've invested a lot of energy to get more PIDs/sec and I finally could archieve +300 PIDs/sec with a CANable adapter. I've made an application to convert the ELM327 to SLCAN protocol for that purpose. Even the USB Adapters are using serial lines internally, it's probably the bottleneck of these.

Nice work! Going straight to the CAN bus will give you fantastic PID speeds. The typical ELM327 uses 38,400 bps communication between the Bluetooth module and the 18F25K80 micro controller... and (as you mentioned) that is the bottleneck.

I bought an SX back in approximately 2015 I think and used it on a laptop. It then sat in a closet for around five years. I bought a 2004 Miata recently and needed it. The laptop had become unbearably slow and unusable due to win10 and old technology . So I bought a cheap android tablet. I connected the SX to it with OBDLink and it came up and ran fine. It downloaded a firmware update, Went from 4.x to the latest 5.x and it works great on my Miata. I am thoroughly impressed. This is a company that makes long lasting products, doesn't drop them and has tremendous product support. That is something rarely seen these days. I suggest anyone needing a scanner to buy one from OBDLink. If the time comes for me I will buy an MX+ but right now the SX meets my needs.

Hi! I use obdlink mx plus with iphone 12 and obdlink app. My refresh rate is only 10 PIDs/sec. ☹️ What can I do if i would like faster refrasesh rate???? Thanks

In OBDLink under settings > preferences > communications make sure "Fast Polling" is ON and dwell time is set to 0. If the PID speed is the same, that is as fast as your car can respond to OBD requests. From what I have seen, the newer cars are slower due to enhanced security and network gateways.

Watched the video earlier. Great channel with concise descriptions, explanations, and video length. Just came back into the video to use your affiliate link. Find a good supplier of OTG USB 3.0 cables, and add an affiliate link for that. (I know the SX is USB 2.0, but USB DAC's, and streaming, and futureproof, etc.) One other thing. When you click the affiliate link, it goes from within the KZfaq app to Amazon (as apposed to opening up a chrome window) if I add the item to my cart, but back out of KZfaq, then complete the purchase on the browser, do you still get the commission? I'll normally add items to my cart and then sleep on it. Want to make sure I'm not accidently nullifying the commission to creators.

It is my understanding that not all Android devices support "OTG" (On the go) USB. Maybe check and see if your does. You could also try it on a PC using the included OBDLink software to verify the USB device is working. Good luck!

For my particular situation, maximum speed is not nearly as important as connection reliability. Have you found the wired USB connection type more reliable than with bluetooth? I've heard that some bluetooth dongles will go into low power mode and/or disconnect under certain conditions. I'm hoping this is no the case with your USB OBD2 cable setup.

Great question! You would think a USB connected device would be the best... But in testing last week, it seems my OTG cable or tablet doesn't make a firm connection and looses connection to the ECU unless I tape the cable to the tablet to prevent it from moving. From all the testing / data logging I have done, I have never had a VeePeak or OBDLink MX+ disconnect while data logging, and some of my data logs are just over 3 hours.

@@OBD4Everyone That's good to know. I know some applications are ultra sensitive to cable connection stability. For example, Android Auto complains at even the _slightest_ movement of the cable it seems unless you have a really really solid connection with a high quality cable. For that reason I researched the best cables to use for Android Auto and ended up with one from Anker which has worked very well. To make a long story short, in the near future I'm going to replace my laggy/slow head unit in my 2016 Kia Soul EV electric car with a zippy Android based one with tons of features, but in order to keep some of the important info available (like battery health), I'll be running Torque Pro (or one of the alternatives) to show those pieces of info when I need them.

It's apparent by your testing that a hardwired connection is much faster than Bluetooth wireless. This is what anyone should expect. It might be better to do separate testing to see who has the fastest Bluetooth speed or the fastest USB speed. Have you done any comparison of different Bluetooth code readers?

I did a few years ago: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5iqpd1o1Myqdqs.html Keep in mind, the PID speed is mostly determined by the OBD protocol used and if the OBD system has an OBD Gateway. From what I have seen, any vehicle with "ADAS - advanced driver assistance system" will have an OBD gateway and much slower PID speed. A few years ago, I tested a 2019 BMW 330 and the PID speed was 12/second using an OBDLink MX+. My 2011 Infiniti gives ~45 PIDs/second using the same device,.

Don't hear much about diesel Scanners. Which is the best scanner for a 2004 Ford Excursion 6.0 Diesel Power-stroke for the android?

Hey Dale Rox, Good question! However, since I don't know anyone who owns a diesel, I can't do any testing to find out. If you haven't already tried, have a look at the playstore for power stroke OBD apps with good ratings. Other than that, I've got nothing. Good luck!

Have you ever looked into the Banks 1.8 guages? I like the concept, but they seem limited in the PIDs Banks support.-Not all the PIDs that are available to other data loggers.

Hey TeutonicSpeedracer, I have looked at the Banks gauges. They make an excellent high quality product, but they are not inexpensive. As for the PIDs they support, I suspect that is vehicle dependant since they use the OBD service mode $01 to get that data.

@@OBD4Everyone It is vehicle dependent, but if I do know they're available via say scanguauge II x guages (TPMS, wheel speeds, tire temps,etc), it would be nice to have available to enter these PIDs by the user. Maybe Fusion can get these same PIDs, but the Banks mount option is very OEM-esque.

I have not any problems with any of the OBDLink products I own (MX+ and SX), so I lean toward them. I also like the well organized diagnostic report. It creates a nice snap shot of the vehicle's health. I run this report after every oil change. It some problem does pop up, I can have a look at what is different. This can be helpful when troubleshooting. I have only used the BlueDriver a few times and it didn't really connect with me. I should have another look and put out a review.

Thanks for the comment. The main goal of this channel is to provide information that applies to most vehicles using affordable apps or programs. Once we get into valve body & gearbox stuff, the software is expensive and it is very vehicle specific.

Hi love this idea so I got the same scanner an a brand new OTG cable but it won't work on any of the apps including the recommended apps, just keeps saying USB device unsupported. It will only run on torque but is only reading at 5 PID. I tried it on my laptop an was getting 60 PID with obdwiz. The two devices I have are a Huawei mate 9 an a Huawei mate 20 Pro an the car is an 2006 Subaru liberty (legacy) any help would be great. Thanks 🙏

It looks like the Huawei mate doesn't support the USB function that the OBDLink SX uses.... but Torque is able to work, so I don't know what else to suggest. Maybe try a friends android device to verify it is the Huawei.

I use obdlink lx on my 2008 altima , i checked the speed it was 6.x using iso9141-2 , not can bus , is the problem with the lx not working with canbus? When i log the engine with uprev the data stream is fast .

EcuTek uses the fast CAN bus to get the data quickly. Since your Altima is a 2008, it should also use the CAN bus to get OBD data, as that was mandated for the 2008 model year. However, if it is using ISO-9141, you won't get OBD data very fast, as it is much slower. I think your LX is fine. Try testing it on a 2010+ Nissan or Infiniti to verify that it can read faster.

The update speed of the gauges depends on a few things: • The protocol and speed of your car's OBD system • The speed of your OBD scanner • The speed of your OBD scanner connection to the device (laptop, phone or tablet) Older cars networks runs at about 12,000 bits/second. 2008 and newer cars have a network speed of 500,000 bits per second.

Hi there. Tha so for sharing such great content with us. Love your channel. Question: I have been using obd link for long time. Have it all set up just like you on my android devi e but the refreshing rate for my device is averaging 35 PIDs per second. What could be wrong? If I try to mallnually set the baud rate to 500.000, it won't connect so I have to leave as automatic or 115.000. thank you.

The PID read speed is mostly determined by how quickly your ECU/PCM is programmed to reply to the OBD requests. -AND- newer vehicles have a CAN bus gateway to protect the car's network which can slow down the PID read speed. Bottom line: If you have followed the steps to set "fast polling" and "Dwell time" the speed you get, is the best speed for your application.

@@OBD4Everyone Thanks mate. I actually figured out what the problem was myself after digging further in it. I had too many PIDs being logged. Just removed a few and now I have a good 120 PID/sec refresh rate Thanks a lot.

I have a tuned 2018 Hyundai 1.6T dual clutch 35,000 miles. I bought a Banks iDash gauge and noticed on full acceleration I was only getting 14.2-.14.9ish on idle through full throttle. Stuck in open loops comes to mind???? Bought 2 new OEM sensors to be safe. They are idiot proof, installed correct spot. AF has a large dish shield. Still the same and on coasting I get a 7.3 reading, the direct opposite I normally get a 28 to 29 on my old logs. The tuner said I would be stalling the engine at 7.3, so he thinks it is some form of false reading. I tested it with BT VeePeak Fusion/ iphone and it backs up the iDash readings. All this is the same reading with stage 2 and now down stage 1 as I want it to be safer as it is a daily driver. Any idea what could be giving me 7.3:1 on deceleration, where I was once at 29:1 ? It is a MAP sensored car. I don't know if I really need to check it with laptop/windows obdlink sx usb red adapter since 2 different platform agreed.

I am not familiar with that engine, but I will give it a shot... The Banks iDash and the VeePeak/OBD Fusion both read the data from the engine control unit using OBD mode $01, aka live data. That's why they show the same values. An air/fuel ratio of around 30 is normal when the throttle is closed and the vehicle is slowing down. To verify the sensors/data, you might want to flash back to stock and see what they read. Generally during wide open throttle, the air/fuel ratio is in the 12s (or lower), and during constant speed cruising it should be mid 14s. If you have an air/fuel ratio of 7 when the throttle is closed and slowing down, maybe the tuner is dumping fuel into the exhaust for a pops/bang result?

@@OBD4Everyone No, I hate pops and bangs and would never have a tune that way, and I have logs from my Fusion App at 29 with throttle closed. I don't get why they can't read simple OBD2 speced logs correctly.

Maybe the tune has messed with the internal voltage to air/fuel ratio? Flash back to stock and see... Or read the voltage off the air/fuel sensor and use the factory shop manual table of volts to AFR and see what the ECU is actually seeing for AFR in a "raw/unfiltered" format. Good Luck!

I haven't tested it with Dash Command, but if it supports a USB connection and if your android device support an "OTG" or "on the go cable" I think it should work, but that is only my guess.

@@OBD4Everyone Thanks for the reply. It seems Dash Command is very picky with the cables. I tried the “OBDLink EX FORScan OBD Adapter” with no luck on Dash Command but it works with some other apps. I might try the SX at some point as I’ve seen someone else do it. I’ll post an update here to spread the knowledge if I try it.

Hello Sir! Is it possible to read the Steering wheel angle with the SX, if the manufacturer provides the steering wheel angle on the obd2 port? Thank you!

For something like the steering wheel angle, it isn't the hardware, but the software that determines if the sensor can be read. On my 2011 Infiniti G37, using OBDFusion WITH the ~$15 enhanced diagnostic add-on I can display my steering wheel angle. You might want to contact OBDFusion support and see if your vehicle is supported for the enhanced diagnostics and the steering wheel sensor.

Since the C-HR is an OBD certified vehicle, the SC (or any other OBD scanner) will show the basic OBD data. With that said, I have no idea what is available to the SX on the "electric side"

Does the tablet have to have a otb port? I'm looking to hard wire a tablet to the obd2 for speed/tach. Im looking for zero delay. If I buy a obd2 that has a USB end can I comect the USB into a tablet that allows for a USB and run a digital gauge app?

^^^ Yes. Many Android tablets support "OTG" (on the go) cables. This gives the tablet a USB port. I used that to plug in a USB connected OBD scanner (OBDLink SX) I have done speed test on the cheaper USB "ELM327" and they are slower. This is due to the USB connection speed, which is 38,400 bits per second. The SX runs at 115,200, so it is just much quicker. Now, 38,400 bits per second may be more than enough for your application of speed and tach. Also, depending on the communication protocol your ECU uses, the updates may not be "instant". Most cars made for the North American market from 2008+ use CAN Bus and that runs at 500,000 bits/sec. That's quick! If you car is 2007 or older, the communication speed will be around 12,000 bits/second or slower. Good luck with your project!

Thanks for the great video! I immediately bought the OBDLink SX and an OTG cable to connect my 2013 G37 IPL to my Galaxy S10 phone. However, the OBDLink app only shows a refresh rate of about 24 PIDs/second. Any idea why I'm getting a much lower refresh rate than you? I can attach a screenshot here, but I'm not sure if youtube allows that.

Hey Brian M, Well, that is odd... Those speed test numbers were from an my Samsung Galaxy Tab A, 10.1 (SM-T580) running Android 8.1.0, on my 2011 G37. I just checked the 2013 factory shop manual and your CAN bus network layout is the same as my 2011 G37. (as in, no OBD gateway). So our vehicle networks should be the same. Do you have "fast polling" turned on and "dwell" set to zero, as shown in the video? (I think they are now the default setting, but you might want to double check) Also, make sure data logging is turned off. One last test: Try turning off wifi and bluetooth. Maybe the phone is prioritizing wireless data over wired... I don't know but I would expect you to get a similar speed. (unless android tablets prioritize USB speed higher than phones??) Can you borrow another Android device (maybe a tablet) and test the speed?

I use the mx on my samsung s22 phone and the samsung s5e tablet. I bought the obdlink sx and neither one will recognize the sx. Is there some type of software to make it work?

Good day, small question. I am thinking to install this permanent a motorcycle. Is the usb port also able to charge a android phone while connected or will it need a separate connection? Otherwise im probably better of using the Bluetooth version i guess, but am aiming max pid speed Tnx in advance.

The OBD SX with an OTG cables does not charge the Android device... at least it didn't on my Samsung Tab A. I agree that Bluetooth may be the better option and that is easier to keep out of the weather/rain.

Hey Bleebleblahble88, I have not. My understanding is that it is the same as the SX PLUS the automatic switching to the "Ford Medium-Speed CAN (MS-CAN)" that is on pins 3 &11 of the diagnostic port. So.... If you have a Ford vehicle and like to use ForScan, this would probably be the best OBD scanner to use. -or- you can also use the MX+.

Hello sir!I am thinking about to buy obdlink for graphing logging data and I don't know which is faster the sx via USB or mx+ via Bluetooth?I am engineer and I want to see fast reaction for example o2 sensor and maf and stft and tps at wot for lean or rich conditions etc...what is your opinion to choose?Bluetooth has it stable connection like USB or is falling ?and last question on the graphing log it have limit 4 different sensors to see the graph or you can add more? The PID/second (aka sensor update speed) depends on the vehicle, communication protocol used and how the engine controller is programmed to reply to diagnostic requests. The MX+ bluetooth is very good. I don't think I have had a single error or have it disconnect in the 3+ years I have been using them. The graph function is limited to 4 items. However, you can data log to a CSV file and graph as much as you require.

If I am data logging PIDs that change quickly (MAF / Air flow, etc), I will use the SX for a fast sample rate. If I am only looking at temperatures I will use the MX+ as a fast sample rate doesn't provide any additional information. Using ForScan, the SX will only show the HS bus. MX+ will show the MS and the HS CAN bus. The EX will show MS/HS and is USB: www.obdlink.com/products/obdlink-ex/

Good question! I have disassembled and reverse engineered about 3 cheap "ELM 327" OBD scanners. In looking at the circuit design and assembly, I don't think they can short out a PCM. Even the cheap ones are built with automotive grade semiconductors and are well built. Now that is only 3 devices out of the 100s that are out there, but I can only answer with what I have seen. I don't hesitate to use the cheap ones on my car. BUT if you want to be safe, have a look at OBDLink or Veepeak OBD scanner on Amazon. They are a good price and are good products.

I would first verify that your device supports OTG, then check to see if the Android system needs external USB enabled, or something like that. My Samsung Tab A is running version 8 of Android, so maybe the newer OS have more security??

@@OBD4Everyone Thanks for responding, I managed to fix it, the OTG adapter was faulty, luckily I had a second one that worked. I'm disappointed by the capabilities of the app for the SX cable, I can only use addons with an MX+ bluetooth one. And the PIDs to read are not all giving any readings. Like fuel usage. I have a Saab 9-3 2004 2.0t.

Correct... the add-ons are licensed to the tool, not the app. The app developer is required to pay thousands of $$$ per year for access to the factory definitions. There is no PID for fuel usage, so you won't get that. Many apps try to figure it out based on MAP, AFR and MAF... but generally it isn't accurate. Nice car by the way... I love Saabs :)

Can someone please help me out! I have this exact same setup OBD2 link SX and a android tablet. Vehicle info: 03 lq9 LS 411pcm standalone harness. Can only connect with key on engine off. As soon as the engine is running I lose all connection. I've traced back all the OBD2 pins #2 data 4&5 ground a pin 16 constant power. everything looks to be okay. I can cont via laptop no problem but not tablet. I'm trying to run tablet as gauge cluster. Firmware is up to date. I can connect to other vehicles just fine except this one. Please can someone please help iv been fight this for weeks now.

I believe that engine used SAE J1850 VPW for the OBD protocol... That means there should be data on pins #2 (J1850+) and pins 10 (J1850-) Since the laptop and SX work, but not the tablet and SX, I would try a different android device or contact OBDLink SX support forum and see what they say: www.scantool.net/forum/index.php#c4

@@OBD4Everyone thank you for responding I have confirmed the data to pin 2 there is nothing pin 10 would you know what pin on the 411 PCM has (j1850-). Iv tried two other tablets with no success. Iv even hook it up to my buddies 03 Chevy 1500 and my girlfriend 2020 Buick and they connect with no issues. But now that you bring up pin#10 I did notice those cars did have a wire at pin #10 on the OBD2 so maybe that's what I'm missing. I'll try and find a pin out to see where pin 10 should go on the PCM and let you know. Thanks!

Nope, it doesn't have any bi-directional features (as in the app turning on/off a fuel injector/fuel pump) Generally, devices with that ability start at $500 and run up to a few thousand dollars.

I've had luck getting my old Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to work but the "companion" tablet that came out around the same time Galaxy Tab 3 doesn't. And I'm trying to use this with Hybrid Assistant so I certainly wanted the bigger screen. :(

Not that I know of... the Tatrix Openport is a J2534 interface. This is an interface standard designed by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) and mandated by the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) for vehicle ECU reprogramming. This is different than an OBD scanner.

Apple has decided not to support OTG aka "On the Go" USB, so no. This only works on Android devices that support OTG.

I am very behind in getting videos out. Most of my time has been focused on my other channel (MotorvateDIY) and developing CAN bus gauges and gear position indicators that use the factory gauges. I do have a lot of content to get out, I'm just not sure when that will happen, but will try to move OBD content up on my priority list. Hang in there!

Hey Mitch, its good to her from you. However, 1,000 PID/second? I don't think the ECU would respond to the requested data at that rate. Raw CAN bus broadcasts are no faster than 10ms (100/sec) and you are suggesting that you can ask and receive a PID in 1ms?

No I haven't.... but since you asked, I had to look into it :) Very nice graphics!! Yes it works well, just set it up as an OBD connection and you will have access to all the OBD PIDs your ECU/PCM supports.

In that case, I think a stand alone, wired scanner would work well for you. Plug it in and you get the code. :)
