Tsu looks like people running away from the tsunami. The real struggle for me is ソ and ン My mnemotechnics is the right part shows somebody driving and the left part is the wheel. ソ is realistic so it's "souka" and ン has the wheel all screwed up so it's "*n*ot good, who would drive like this". But it takes over 3s to remember this so I don't recommend using this

@@zilliq-qz5uw Yeah, kinda messy to remember. Sincerely, I don't use mnemonics to remember them. I literally just remember. What can really help (and will ensure that you will always be able to differenciate them) is reading. Read a lot. You don't even need to understand, but read. Read what you can. you'll eventually know them by heart. Singing when reading the lyrics in japanese in another way. Give it a try!

@@silverhand861 Yeah, there's some katakana that's difficult to know for sure lol, and that`s because of their frequency. there was this day that I crossed upon the ヲ (wo) katakana and I just staggered in front of this alien symbol that I couldn`t remember at all. I totally forgot that there were a katakana for "wo" 'cause I rarely see it written.

back in ancient times "naru" (to become) was used in multiple ways as a grammar device. ending on it in its noun form "nari" (becoming) was used to indicate either hearing noises or that you're not entirely certain yourself of what you just said (because things either just "seem that way" or it was told to you by someone else). "naru," on the other hand, was put after one noun and before another noun to describe a noun with using noun. hence, for instance, "kirei naru youbou" (beauty become face) would be the ancient way of saying "beautiful face." it's weird now to use "become" like this, but we're talking way back when all world languages were less advanced and had less words. over time, this "naru" just become "na" due to being said so much that the people wanted to say it faster. the japanese language is unreal in how often they shorten phrases and grammar. for instance "kore mo yatte shimau ni sita tokoro de ima no muzukasii joutai ga kawaranai darou" would be written in a dictionary or novel, but an actual japanese person would usually say something more like "kore mo yacchau ni shitatte ima no muzui joutai kawaran darou." the japanese language is all about shortening EVERYTHING. while "na" describes a noun with another noun, it describes the state or attributes. ie: this "face" can be considered "beauty". this makes it unlike "no" which indicates possession or the noun falling into some form of category. (also don't use "youbou" to say "face," like i did earlier, because it's archaic. (rarely) you'll read it in modern japanese novels when they try to speak poetically, but i only used it since i was giving an example of ancient japanese.

One thing I've always wondered about Japanese is, is there a way to enhance an idiom? For example, in English, we have phrases like: Kill two birds with one stone Take it with a grain of salt A one-two punch And I've seen people emphasize them by saying: Kill three birds with one stone Take it with a _very_ large grain of salt Not just a one-two punch, but a "one-two-three-four" punch. This isn't even limited to idioms. Earlier today, my sister was describing how injured an anime character was, and she said, "Forget 1st aid, she needs 2nd and 3rd aid!" I wonder if this is possible in Japanese.

I've seen 一石三鳥 instead of 一石二鳥. Probably just depends on the phrase and how it can be reasonably modified.
@AnnaMorimoto
@AnnaMorimoto Ай бұрын
You'd have to make sure the other person gets the reference. Easier in writing, harder when speaking. I've seen 一石三鳥. Because 75% of the kanji are the same as the original, because it's a very popular phrase and because it's a popular alteration made by many people, most Japanese people will instantly get it. When speaking or referencing a less known idiom or proverb, you'd have to qualify it by mentioning the original idiom or proverb first. Just like your sister said "forget 1st aid..." or like you said "Not just one-two punch..." Beware homonyms. I've seen a coworker try to modify 三寒四温 by just mentioning しおん and fail to convey his point, because シオン can also be a flower, and nobody ever uses 四温 as a word in of itself outside of 三寒四温.

The self-study in High School before a Japanese degree is so goddamn accurate, how do you know the fact I'd mix those katakana up in my first semester so much? Oh the joys of majoring in Japanese, welcome to the only degree-level language course where no one's heard about transitive and intransitive verbs before, but the whole class could debate for hours about whether Naruto or Bleach *potential spoiler incoming* . had a worse ending in terms of the ships, ffs give the people what they want. The only reason I want to get Jozu is so I can head to Tokyo myself and give those two mangaka a piece of my mind. Incredible stories, beyond lacklustre pairings, for the love of god it's almost like you lost all humanity tirelessly working on some ground-breaking shonen stories over a period of many years.

What do you think about using it to practice conversation? Do you think that AI (Even smaller models) is capable of natural conversational Japanese that isn't just obviously Google-Translated?
@phen-themoogle7651
@phen-themoogle7651 Ай бұрын
If you are anywhere from beginner-intermediate it's okay to use something like GPT 3.5 , advanced level you might want GPT4 or Claude3 or GeminiUltra/Pro(whatever it's called I forgot) for more native level Japanese. As someone that worked as a translator, I've used some of the paid models to help with my work flow. Anything GPT3.5level or above is generally better than google-translate by far , but as you know they still make some mistakes on occasions and you will have to use them more on the side to supplement your learning than rely fully on them(depending on your goals). But you can still learn new vocab and expressions and have it customize how it converses with you so it's better than convos with some people that might not be good conversationalists, depends how you prompt it really. I'm not sure about smaller open-source models, but I heard there was something finetuned for Japanese before (but even so, it's probably close to GPT3.5 level).

They become easier when you write them with the correct stroke order. Also, look up the Jojo meme of "shi""tsu" "so""n" and that can help. Another way is to also start with "tsu" katakana. That katakana has strokes that all kinda line up at the top where the cross-stroke of a "T" would be. That one in your brain just needs to be cemented as "tsu" always and only. Once you have that one down then the others become easier as you have setup a process-of-elimination for yourself.
