Christopher Reeve was the best actor ever to play the iconic role. He is, and will forever be, the benchmark that all actors who play Superman are judged against. No other actor, who's played a super hero, is so overwhelmingly agreed upon by the majority of people to be the best. If you ask people who the best Batman was, you'll get a bunch of different answers. You ask who was the best Superman, and 90% say Reeve. The other 10% are idiots or never saw the movie... Lol. I think the next closest person, to play a super hero, would be Robert Downey Jr., as Iron Man. Nobody will ever play Iron Man, or should I say Tony Stark, better than Downey Jr. I know this is my opinion, by I think most people would agree. It would have been so cool if Christopher Reeve could have played the part with today's special effects. Given the fact that the original Superman movie still holds water today, despite the use of 70's special effects, is because of Reeve.

This movie came out 17 years before I was born. I've watched it for the first time this year and I must say I loved it a million times more than Man of Steel. Christopher Reeve's performance made it feel as if Superman jumped out of the comics to our world. Not only Reeve, but all the characters/actors were interesting and fun-loving. The music by John Williams really captured the essence of the movie as well. Although, I must say some lines I found cheesy and the flying was kind of corny to me (then again I grew up with movies where the flying was enhance by CGI, but I love Reeve's flying technique and I bet people's minds were truly blown by this new technology.), I really felt the soul and magic as these people described in the video. And THAT I do not see too often in today's films.

I will never forget how amazed all us kids were watching the titles on the big screen. We couldn't even find seats in the theater. We had to stand in the back and when one of us spotted a seat we had to brave working our way down the aisle and to the seat 💺 we spotted. (4 teenaged girls) We all had to sit separately.

People around me say "OMG, are you watching that again? how many times have you watched it?. They have no idea what this film means to me. When I'm low, it lifts me. When I need strength, it empowers me. The music...well, do I even have to tell you? Nobody before, since, or in future will bring this character alive in the same way Chris Reeve did. For me, the most moving part is the look on Chris's face when Lois Dies. The man of steel crumbles, then lets out the most epic scream in cinema history, and flies skyward with every ounce of strength he has, only to be confronted by the ethics of his father's voice. Even though the whole turning back time thing was a bit of a stretch, we were kids caught up in the moment when he flew at light speed to save lois. I feel very proud of the fact that such a large part was made here in the UK. Chris and the gang, sure did convey the best of humanity, considering that Superman is an alien. This will always be my favourite film ever. It's effects on me have been....SUPER!

Honestly, the others just...don't compare--though I humbly suggest people take a look at Gerard Christopher (who played a 23-ish 'Superboy) as clear, if distant, 2nd: he was a Superman fan, and studied Alyn's, George Reeves', and especially Chris's performances. Did a very respectable classic superman (and alter ego) that got the tone of the character, and his inspirational value, down very well. No Chris Reeve, but...he deliberately created a similar vibe. Best of the rest.

He gave the best performance, had the best costume and most accurate to the comic, he even looked like the one in the comic. He had the best music composed by John Williams, he even had the best decade as in the 1970's they had no CGI and it was still made believable!. The other actors before and after Christopher Reeve are a pale imitation and don't even come close!

***** Hey, That can be true--though from about 1902-1978 in the US, the constituents got a lot more buy-in. They all agreed with T. Roosevelt that they shouldn't have to tolerate 'no concern', and so they didn't. ...The demise of unions and the strengthening of the right in the west has changed that quite a lot since then--really: workers used to get a much higher percentage of profits, for example. ...Superman--and especially S-II, was really hauled before the US Congress in outrage over all the absurdly crude product placement. People, i.e. powerful US Senators, were wondering..."can they DO that!" Well...as Dick Donner said with humorous bitterness: "I don't need to tell you who won that fight!"

Austin Pearce The Salkinds WERE crooks. They went through immense effort to try to cheat Brando out of his salary, and raised and paid their loans in an extremely sleazy manner. And they never admitted they weren't the original producers, but were just continuing George Basset's film. Oh--and if they'd shot the script they gave Donner before he had his friend heavily rewrite it...BAD. That kind of capitalism would have been bad for everyone, but ESPECIALLY them, the capitalists. Ilya, the son, eventually seems to have become a less shallow person. It was after his father started stealing from him in the early 1990s...

They sold the franchise to Golan-Globus and we got Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. How could you have so little respect for the property of Superman that you sell it to film-makers whose career-high would be Breakin' (1984)? Just because they didn't know what Superman was all about with Superman III, relying on the attempted comedy of Richard Pryor, that didn't mean the franchise was out of steam. If they had rehired Donner, given him a decent budget then got the hell out of his way he'd have made a half decent Superman IV.

I remember watching the original superman in the 80s. My aunt was getting jealous of Lois Lane flying with superman, and that song "can you feel my heart..." will never forget this song. Christopher Reeve was great. Yup only Christopher Reeve the man of steel. He was very handsome.

I saw it when it came out, and trust me, as a 10 year old kid, it was more than a fantastic experience that you can never forget. Forget all the CGI's effects, they will never replace the magic of the blue screen of that time, seriously, sounds weird to say but it looked more real.

Even seeing the movie for the first time on VHS as a kid in the '80s was special. That first flying scene with the music is great. I liked Man of Steel but nothing about the flying scenes blew me away. We're very used to huge CGI effects these days. Superman 1978 & the original Star Wars trilogy had so many epic scenes & special effects that were new & ground breaking at the time.

Totally agree about the CGI ruining a lot of movies. Also, don't discount the fact that Superman benefitted from having the best film composer of all-time writing one of his best pieces of music ever, the effortless charm of Christopher Reeve, and the uber talent of Richard Donner.

CGI actually takes away from a movie sometimes. Just look at how the original Star wars and star trek movie still hold water, with the use of models. They just look more realistic on screen if you film them properly. The drawback is the cost and time involved.

When I first saw Superman in a theater with my parents,I was so so overwhelmed by the shear majesty of this movie.I thought I was the only one with my eyes transfixed and my jaw agape to this wonderful experience....I was wrong, both of my parents were captivated as much as I or maybe even more.Superman the movie should not be missed by anyone, you will see the beauty and feel every emotion imaginable, and most importantly...."You Will Believe A Man Can Fly".It's too bad that the folks that are creating movies today don't understand that more is not always better and that simplicity and the true love for the movie is what matters and comes across to the fans.

Smart, sensitive, creative people who weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty made this film. I recall watching in a theater in Ohio, I was 8 years old. The scene that brought that “chill” up my back, as well as literal tears(I remember turning so no one would see me) was when he finally emerged from the fortress as Superman. The music and the look and finally flying towards us and to the right of the screen. I couldn’t contain myself. It was the greatest feeling I have ever had in a movie theater and made me realize what is possible in cinema.

The sections in the fortress shot by Unsworth are beautiful hints of color and shadow--the sections of Superman II done by Lester's replacement (with 3 cameras running and 150 lines of dialogue to do each day, probably) are just washed out white, instead.

I don't care that the new Super man has whiz bang CGI. When Christopher Reeve finally went through his transformation scene to save the helicopter and Lois, John Williams music starts thumping and you feel that energy ramping up Donner absolutely nailed that excitement in the movie. When i get that shiver of excitement down my spine that's when i know its all working. I NEVER got that with any of the other Superman movies of late.

gdub454 I love that scene!! Its a classic. I love everything about it. The slow build to "the moment". "Whooa thats BAD OUT FIT!!" .... scuse me.. WHoooosh!!. I am just so tired of all these big "FX" movies today. To me they all look the same. Even if the fx are wonderful and incredible. All of this big "tent pole" films. The trailers all look identical. The fx all look identical. There is just a homogenousness about it all now. There is no design and concept of thought (like a Close Encounters or 2001). All of these FX are now farmed out to the lowest bidder and 40 people crank it all out like an assembly line.

gdub454 This film also just "Looks" different. Its from the era when the film stocks were different. I don't quite know how to explain it perfectly but its from the era of real 70's films. There's a little more grain in the film and just that wonderful real "FILM" look (that i love). I am just reaching the point where i am absolutely tired of these cranked out CGI Spastaculars. Derrick Meddings model work on the helicopter sequence is incredible. It looks so real and "tangible" and is seamlessly cut in to the live action. I still get a chill watching the sequence i think Donner absolutely nailed the "big reveal" on that one.

roquefortfiles yes..totally understand what you're saying w/ it has a "70s look" about it..a little grainy maybe..and that's ok..yea that helicopter sequence looked as real as real gets...Superman grabs it...(I got it..no prob..ha)..puts it and Lois back on top of bldg..safe n sound..people on the ground are like.."who or what just pulled that off"..cool show..prolly seen @ least half dozen times...the 2nd Superman was decent as well...the rest...well...not so much so..))..Air traffic control scene from Close Encounters is up for viewing...that movie rules too...
