In today’s episode, Becket chats with his pastor, Dr. Jeremy Treat, about his new book on the atonement. You’ll be surprised and edified by this one.
The atonement is central to Christian theology and essential for following Jesus. In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, pastor Jeremy Treat explains what Scripture teaches about the atonement and how it impacts one’s daily life.
Treat demonstrates that the death of Christ is a multi-dimensional work within the story of the kingdom of God. While the accomplishments of the cross are unending (including forgiveness, victory, and renewal), the heart of the cross is substitution―Jesus dying on behalf of sinners. Christ’s atoning work reconciles believers to God and to one another, calling them to a life of obedience. This book presents a kingdom-framed, substitution-centered, Trinitarian, integrated, communal, and life-changing approach to the doctrine of atonement.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from college, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

Thank you so much for talking about shame. Awhile back I had to go back in my memory to my life as a single mother before I was a Christian. I had forgot about how bad a mother I was. I mean I didn’t beat my kids or anything but even though I thought I loved them with all my heart, I realized how much I put myself first. And I was reading Gods Word and I can’t remember where I was reading but whatever it was I realized Jesus died for my sins yes, but He also took and suffered my shame. It was such a revelation and a comfort. I was praising Him more for Him doing that for me. What a Great Savior! ❤

Many people who have had near death experiences shared that Jesus loved them as if they were the only person in the world, but He loves everyone just like that. We do matter to Him as a unique, special, person. Scripture is full of examples of this - He has numbered the hairs on our heads, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, he sees when even the sparrow falls and we are more valuable than the sparrows.

So wish so many including so many Catholics and Mary worshipers would realize the significance of Jesus Christ coming from the Father and born as a human taking on our flesh and yet wholly and fully God and chose to die for every sin and accepted the punishment upon Him and separation from the Father - willing to die for me - willing to die for all who He is calling and will call to himself. Amen - died to satisfy the wrath of God ✝️✝️✝️🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻. No other name under heaven by which we are saved. Thank You Jesus Christ ✝️✝️✝️🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Awesome- the bit about God not having different hats. He is who He is when He judges or is gracious, merciful, loving, gentle kind forgiving…… and this made me realise that we are who we are ie product of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil ( quite a mouthful) and that we don’t have different hats either. That everything we do whether good or bad is tainted by the fall. And when I saw that Jesus saying there is no one good but God took on a clearer meaning. God, without the covering of Christ’s blood sees NO good in us but yet He loved us John 3:16 NASBS [16] "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. Now I’m astounded after being a Christian 41 yrs. And if I do good it’s Christs power for apart from Him I do nothing. John 15:5 NASBS [5] I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. ie nothing of any value. Paradoxically this is good news and so unburdening. Thank you Becket 🙂

Thanks for another amazing video. Lots to think about. One thing I've always struggled to try to understand is the spiritual Groundhog Day / the unending do over belief so many Christians talk about and model. I unexpectedly became a Christian 3 years ago (in my 50s), read the Bible cover to cover, and was even more perplexed by the Groundhog Day belief - as in _I didn't see that in MY Bible_ . Dr Treat explains it very well.

Part of what has taken away from the full understanding of the cross is the expression “Jesus is my personal Savior.” Sure, but He is more than that. I think that idea came out in the 1970’s in the Campus Crusades. I had never heard it until then. Then came the new music that emphasized “I” instead of “we”. A lot of emphasis on the self.

Yes, the Atonement is very, very important and under appreciated in Christian circles. Wow. I need to do more reading on this. I had only defined atonement as satisfaction of God's wrath. I have I guess made propitiation and atonement the same thing. Are they synonymous or does one encompass more than the other? Thinking on 1 John 4:10. Or do both atonement and propitiation encompass more?
@heidigerber8432
@heidigerber8432 8 ай бұрын
I thought propitiation is Christ's work removing our sin & guilt as well as dealing with God's wrath against our sin. Atonement in the OT was not removing sin, but covering it. The blood of bulls & goats could not remove the sin, only cover it to appease God's wrath. Only Christ's sacrificial death could completely remove our sin & satisfy God's requirement for holiness.

This was a wonderful presentation of a subject few of us think about on any deep level! I was really hoping the pastor was going to deal with the issue of definite atonement. He spoke several times of Christ rescuing "His people" from their sins, but how exactly does that happen? If Christ did everything Jeremy said He did, why isn't everybody saved? Even if some don't believe in Him, did He not die for the sin of unbelief? So how is it that anyone is lost if Christ bore in full everyone's sins? I was hoping Jeremy would address that, but it never really came out. Maybe we could have a follow-up interview with him? Or I suppose we can just buy the book and see what he says there.😉

This is great. But I do seem to differ so far (still listening at this writing) with one point. God DOES love us in such an individualistic way, TOO, that is mind-blowing. He knows everything, and He knows us better by far than we even know ourselves, and He does WOO us to Him in the most amazing and perfect way. It's like a tailored just for us, irresistible manner of calling us to Him. Of course we're a flock, we're a people, but we're also singular while we're One, too. Maybe I misunderstood the pastor's words, but I felt a bit if negation on how individually we ARE Loved by God, and that Knowingness is,vI am sure, part of the holy specialness of His calling for us into that MOST intimate of relationships.

Man is carnal by nature. That's why he must be born again/born of the Spirit. Sin is a CHOICE. It starts to *feel* "natural" when it becomes engrained over years but God did not make us sinners. It's a wilful choice to sin and God sent His son to SAVE us from sin (Matthew 1:21) so we don't have to live in bondage to it. Jesus says in John 3 "you MUST be born again". He also says "born of the Spirit". He's talking about the 180 transformation which the Apostle Paul experienced and which all (genuine) Christians have experienced. Paul makes it clear that if someone has not been brought to spiritual life, indwelt by the Holy Spirit and completely transformed by the same power that raised Jesus from the dead then they are NOT SAVED. Salvation after all means saved from sin and Satan (Matthew 1:21, Acts 26:18 etc). The NAME Jesus means "rescuer", "loosener", "deliverer". In John 14:16-17, Jesus says the Holy Spirit will INDWELL believers. That's how regenerate believers are the only true Christians: John 1:12-13 and how we are able to bear the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT (Galatians 5:22-23). Nobody can bear the fruit of the Spirit if they have not been born of the Holy Spirit. So Jesus giving us his Spirit is a huge part of the Good News And it's unique to the New Covenant (Testament). In the Old Testament, God anointed certain people with the Spirit only for certain periods and certain tasks. That explains the Sermon on the Mount. That's why the "standard" is so much higher (eg looking at someone with lust is adultery). Because sin begins in the heart (as Jesus makes clear eg in Matthew 12 & 15) and through the cross and Resurrection, Jesus made it possible for anyone to be MADE NEW and completely transformed. So yes, as it says in Romans 6 & 1st John 3 thru 5 it certainly IS possible to live free from sin. It's not only possible, it's EXPECTED. Because when the HOLY Spirit of God lives inside, we become holy. We have been removed from the (spiritual) kingdom of darkness and now indwell the (spiritual) kingdom of light: Acts 26:18, Ephesians 2, Colossians 1:13 etc etc. ‭"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect" (Matthew 5:48) ‭"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Was Jesus crucified for my specific sins? Or was He crucified to reverse the rebellion of Adam?
@heartofalegend
@heartofalegend 7 ай бұрын
It seems that the totality of Scripture taken together would indicate that it's both. We have the Father speaking in very intimate terms of "knowing" us before we were born, we have Jesus speaking similarly of His sheep in John, and we have Paul talking about this same intimate foreknowledge of God in Romans, Ephesians, and elsewhere. Then we have the writer of Hebrews explaining that those for whom Christ died, He now lives to intercede as our "sympathetic High Priest." When you put all of this together, there is a picture of an intimate aspect of the atonement, as well as a reversal of the curse brought about by the Fall. It's hard to make the case that Jesus merely died for a "group." It seems much more personal than that.

Does Dr. Treat believe Christ died for every single person in the whole world...or for only those the Father gave to him?

This person has an agenda: evangelicals have always praised Christ victory on the cross in countless hymns. Stuart Townend's The Power of the Cross: "It is finished, the victory cry". That old The Witness musical, etc.

It’s interesting. Physicists look at time and space and quantum realms as observer relative. Each sees a side of God’s marvelous creation on the macro to the micro level and each side sees a part of the whole. However, they never seem to see the center of it all as the Creator. That comes from faith, a knowing trust from a creature to their Creator. Similarly, when Jesus came to reveal the Father of Creation, and far more, we the church or the body of Christ sees His knowledge and wisdom and revelation as observer relative, but each side sees a side of the marvelous knowledge of God almighty like e.g. the Atonement and see much of it. The only thing to remember with each angle/ side/ portion of this once partial knowledge like the atonement, all must acknowledge that Jesus is central and fills all in all, who Himself points us to the glorious Father by the Holy Spirit, who reveals all truth to His beloved.

9:03 - What's been lost from modern churches, is that King Jesus is already reigning over His Kingdom. When heaven comes to earth, at Jesus Second Coming, that day He will hand the completed Kingdom to the Father, Christ will subject Himself to the Father forever, and the One God and Father will be all and in all in the eternal Kingdom. 1 Corinthians 15:21,24,28 KJV For since by man came death, *_by man came also the resurrection of the dead._* [24] *_Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father;_* when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. [28] *_And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all._*

I don't think we need to go to Church traditions who have questionable beliefs without mentioning rabid antisemitism, all we need to do is study the Bible in depth and the whole Bible, not just the 4 gospels.

The atonement has nothing at all to do with "politics" and "race". Good grief! 😑 The war was between us and God. When did Jeremy Treat become the pastor there?

Yikes, that might be a bit harsh. I totally get why you're saying what you're saying and am completely with you in the sentiment of it. But I think the more accurate read on the pastor's words is that Jesus is King and therefore there is a political aspect to the victory achieved through the atonement. Christ rules, and all rulers are in subjection to Him. As for race, I only heard him say what the apostle Paul said, that Christ has broken down every wall between us and Him and us and each other. At the foot of the cross, there is no Jew or Gentile, only fellow believers in Christ. If anything, it seems the pastor was pointing out how Christ's atonement should put an end to any preoccupation in the church, when it comes to race or racial reconciliation or any of that. To that, I say, "Amen" because, like you, I'm sick of all this nonsense that we've been dealing with over the past several years.
