With our founders cooling their heels in their new home, we must look to the longer term sustainability of the dome. Living without a homegrown source of many of the resources we need is a recipe for disaster, thus we must gather the means to make it ourselves. Besides, until a baby is born or 10 sols count down, we can't fetch more colonists anyway.

I've recently picked up a copy of this game. I can't tell you how much watching this series has helped me understand the game. Thanks for what you've done

"Abundance is an illusion." Good advice. If potential expenditures are well above current income, stockpiles disappear with shocking speed. Surviving Mars on harder difficulties is more about anticipating shortages of resources, money, power, drones, and labor than trying to quickly respond when deficits occur. Emergencies still happen, but most could have been anticipated and planned for.

I don't know if I'm fully convinced about going science first, but I'm impressed with how well it is working. The early techs are pretty cheap, after all. Sometimes inverting typical priorities works far better than expected.

If I were naming characters in a video game after people who paid me real money, I’d make sure my biggest supporters got the colonists with the flaws. XD

I tried to follow this strategy for my first playthrough (Paradox/Futurist) and it went quite well until just after the founder period. My Science Dome was producing over 1,000 bps and I'd found and unlocked three Breakthrough Techs. But my colonists refused to get frisky, so there was no baby delivered and the founding period ran to full duration. By the time it ended I had run out of both electronic's and funding, despite researching crowd funding and gaining an extra million. So, whilst nobody died, it was merely a matter of time before something critical broke for want of maintenance and I had no way of generating any income. So, I abandoned the mission and walked away. Not sure if I misunderstood the plan or simply got unlucky. I didn;t even get a Celebrity to bring in a little bit of cash.

Picked up this game when EG was giving it away for free. I wish i'd watched this before killing a ton of colonists. =P One thing though, as far as I can tell, pipe valves can't leak, only get destroyed, so if you don't roll superior pipes, just spend the iron to valve every piece of piping. Same goes for switches to guard against cable fault.

Appreciate the series. I find it helpful and interesting. Regarding the "circle of life", I think it's a good idea, but the dome will internally connect each of the 3 utility points, so you don't need to encircle the dome. One or a couple hexes of pipe+cable are all you need at 2 of the 3 connection points and you'll still have the full benefit. Finally, a beaker has straight sides. A flask has a wide base and a narrower neck. Please refer to research points as flasks instead of beakers :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erlenmeyer_flask

Got this free on the EG store, wondering why there is hate for fungal farms. Local food growth without consuming dome space, what's the downside?

Because scanning is still revealing metal and you have a transport, I don't think it's necessary to treat it as a finite resource yet. Not sure what I'd bring instead.

I just got the game yesterday and have started over so many times 🤣🤣🤣 had to start over today cause there was some kind of glitch or malfunction the game was still running drones and everything was moving but couldn't scroll or do anything and the PlayStation back ground music was running just happened on that save file to deleted it and started over and hasn't happened sense but thanks for these videos i see what ive been doing wrong now. I think they should add a multiplayer update in the near future that would be awesome.

I don't like the build of Solar to cover the Machine Parts factory. Yes, MP-F only runs during the day, but we're transitioning to Wind because it's cheaper: the maintenance is 0.5 Machine Part, which is cheaper than 1 Metal after we start producing our own Parts. I completely agree that Solar is the way to start the game, but (imo) you want to transition completely to Wind when Machine Parts become cheap (I even take it to the extreme of deleting my original Solar when I can replace it with Wind). ... while I'm writing, I want to give you props for introducing me to the idea of importing food with your first colonists instead of growing it locally. Food is by far the cheapest resource to import, and the concept has pushed me in the direction of following up the Lab with a Machine Parts Factory, Electronics Lab, and even a Polymer Factory -- all before I build any farms. Population is more valuable making resources than it is growing food.

One thing to keep in mind with solar is that at night, it is fully protected from degradation. Yes it costs 1 metal but by only ticking down 2/3 of the time it becomes close to wind in resources consumed. A tier 2 tech makes solar self-repair a little when closed bringing solar's upkeep to essentially half a metal. I'm not knocking wind, but a mixture is ideal.

If you consider upgrades, then doesn't wind get even more better than solar with the polymer blades? Together with the altitude bonus and day/night cycle. Realistically one probably would expect wind to be too weak to generate energy now and then. Especially in the thin mars atmosphere. Game makes them work 100% reliable though. Also, more power generation per area makes less cable length required and thus reduces cable fails.

No degradation? I thought they just were protected from dust, but non-dust degradation still happened. I'll keep a closer eye next time I play. I think Gwahli's point about getting a bonus for altitude ... plus Wind continues to run during Dust Storms ... gives Wind a clear superiority in the mid-game. There isn't any Disaster which flat-disables a Wind Turbine. With that in mind ... I noticed from the beginning of the next video that your supply of Machine Parts was getting too low, so Solar was really your only option in this video. My mistake.

In the last episode, you chose the grocer instead of the diner. I'd assumed that meeting the shopping need was somehow more important than dining &/or social; but when I checked, scientists have a reduced need for shopping. So I've been wondering if actual game performance is contrary to indicated stats, or what otherwise is the reasoning behind that decision.
@Pinstar
@Pinstar 6 жыл бұрын
A great observation! My goal with the grocer isn't actually to make my colonists happy or comfortable. It is to keep them fed without the 'ate raw food' penalty. So while they won't be hitting up the grocer to fill the "Shopping" need, they WILL for the "food' need. A slow trickle of babies is what I'm aiming for. It won't be for a few domes that I have a proper childcare section setup. Until then, too many extra babies are a bad thing and thus a super-high comfort is actually a liability rather than an asset.

Valves can be used to shut off water/oxygen supply from going though the pipe that its placed on tbh the only real use they have that i found for them is too protect most of your pipe network from leaking water or oxygen in dust storms same thing can be said for power switches

I REALLY hate the rng in this game. I had the perfect start, nice open area water, concrete, first breakthrough cryosleep so all set to start with 32 founders. Then I don't find a single metals or rare metals deposit on ANY of 8 tiles surrounding me. That map had 3 out of 4 pips of metals! had to scrap the entire colony because there was just nowhere to put a dome.
@Pinstar
@Pinstar 6 жыл бұрын
There are times when you will have to build far-flung domes that are NOT within walking distance of each other in order to tap into critical resources. While we did get lucky with a water deposit (which I'm still not using to prove a point) and a metal deposit, we do have to travel several sectors to tap into a rare metals deposit. (Which I'll be doing in a future episode)
