+Luka Jadrijev - He meant everyone in the real world. Jeff Varner thought that Zeke was simply concealing his identity from his tribemates, for whatever reason. Of course, this hardly matters. What Jeff did was truly beyond the pale either way.
@kerry00107 жыл бұрын
While his reasoning isn't really good enough, the following article does give some insight into what happened and why he did what he did www.etonline.com/news/215157_exclusive_inside_jeff_varner_decision_to_out_zeke_smith_at_tribal_council_what_viewers_didn_t_see/ He thought that Zeke had already outed himself in his first season, as it hadn't aired yet and Jeff hadn't seen it, and didn't understand why he was choosing to keep it from this new set of players. Still doesn't make sense to hurt someone in such a personal way... but he was desperate and thought it would help him
@revinevan877 жыл бұрын
He had the assumption Zeke was outed on the Millennials vs Gen-X Season, because this was filmed before the Season had aired so no one on this season knew a thing about Zeke (and Mikaela) or why they were considered "Game changers". He claimed no one on their tribe knew he was out, but thought the world watching already knew. Not to say what he did wasn't wrong at all, but I understand the reasoning for it. Zeke handled it well though and has forgiven Varner for what he did.

I had a political disagreement with someone I once thought was my friend while on social media. I returned the next morning to see that the post was now public and that she made a comment outting me and someone else had joined in on the conversation to try to dogpile me. In DMs i got upset and her last DM mentioned how she was disappointed that we didn't see Eye to eye politically and that she considered that maybe I wasn't out, but when re-reading one of my replies, she felt that the wording indicated that I was ok with it. Her logic was that she would edit that out of her comment if I edited mine first. I pointed out that her comment had been up for a few hours before i saw it and thus there was no sense to it when she sent her last DM explaining herself. I left her on read and blocked her and people found it weird when i tried to explain what happened. She claimed she was an ally and would never do anything to hurt a member of the LGBTQIA+. When I shared the screenshot (with our names censored) people pointed out that she had as it wasn't her place to share that information publicly and given the political context, they thought it was motivated by our disagreement especially as she wouldn't change her comment until I changed mine first. But on TV??? That's on a level that's beyond any sense of forgiveness or consideration. I'm glad they kicked Varner off for that. That's far beyond inexcusable. off.

And it sucks. It's heavy. But what can you do, you know? Especially in a position where Zeke is, where you become, against your will, an example of your community, you can't just go off because then people will assume all trans people or all people like you are angry and will flip their lid at you if you fuck up and it breeds resentment towards you and your people. @@keymuandreabdallah7131 I never said that he said that. It's that one would think that if someone was truly an advocate for Transgender rights, they'd know that outing people as trans when they want to be stealth, is incredibly insensitive and dangerous. There was no reason for Jeff to out Zeke.
@kerry00107 жыл бұрын
For those wondering is CBS shouldn't have aired the episode, here are Zeke's thoughts on the airing "I love Survivor, and I was drawn to apply to Survivor because of the integrity in the storytelling. And when I first applied, I didn’t tell casting that I was trans. That was developed later in our relationship. And I had a chat with Jeff Probst in which we agreed if, how, and when I’m gonna talk about this part of my life-it’s going to be up to me, as opposed to being outed by a fellow contestant being the exception. But in the aftermath of being outed, I’ve been granted unprecedented autonomy in how I wanted to tell my story. We started having conversations all the way back in Fiji nine months ago about the care with which this episode was going to be handled. I came to Jeff and asked if I could write a personal essay about what happened, and he immediately said yes. And I was really proud of how I responded. And I wanted the world to see how much I’d grown and I also thought by showing what happened, maybe it wouldn’t happen to someone else, and something good could come of it."
@dylantd91892 жыл бұрын
I think even though he was outed, it serves as a message that this behaviour won't be tolerated. You don't just get to out people. Also they couldn't just not air the episode, so anyone suggesting that is not thinking right. Beat they could do is just edit the episode like he quit or something.
@jordangustafson13652 жыл бұрын
@@dylantd9189 that's what people don't understand. They have to explain why a whole episode didn't air and rely on a dozen people not to give "rumors" why it didn't and make things worse. Like the Dan allegations a few seasons ago. Sure Dan could have been ejected. But Kelle didn't make a complaint until after the whole episode played out AND 2 other players chose to vote her out and using Janice. It was too late, the dynamics of the season had already played out. Several players would have been unfairly affected at their fair shot at winning which would have ruined the whole season.

I think Zeke did consent to this being aired, which i saw on twitter. Obviously all the contestants can't consent to everything that goes to air, probably due to a contract. But I think because this is such a personal situation that Zeke didn't necessarily want as public knowledge that they had to seek his permission. He didn't even tell the show he was transgender in his audition tape.

If I was Probst I wouldn't even take into question if the other tribe members wanted Varner out I would send him home because they do not want that kind of behavior on this show. He literally told America, with out Zeke's permission, his personal information that Zeke did not even tell anyone on Survivor. I know he realized what he had said but you cannot take back the fact that this was at first personal information which no one knew(except Zeke's loved ones) and set out for ALL of America to hear.

I’m still watching this clip in 2019 and it’s still gut wrenching, like what possesses a person to put someone and call it “being deceptive”. I understand that to some contestants on the show would feel so much pressure and anxiety at the thought of going home after playing for some amount of time but what Jeff did was absolutely terrible in my opinion, he didn’t really have to do what he did and say that he’s in “the fight of his life” at tribal and resort to outing someone who didn’t want to say anything and wasn’t ready to say anything to the world. That is a true testament to what some people will do to save their own skin in a situation like Survivor.

In advance, I'd like to apologize for this man's behavior, I'm not sure if he is christian, but if he is, he's a terrible representation. I do not believe it is wrong or gross to be transgender. In fact, people like you are much worse, seeing people as gross, for being different. God says love everyone, and even if you aren't christian, I think we can agree that we should love all people, no matter what race or gender, or what you identify as. How we act defines us, not what others do, not what race we are, not what gender we are. So, instead of seeing transgender people as disgusting, maybe you should look at yourself and what you do wrong.
@nathanthenamelessninja55725 жыл бұрын
Didn't say you were gross, I said you were worse. And sure, I can be hypothetical, but at least I can see that I'm wrong and try to correct my mistakes. As for transgender people going to hell, A) that's only something that was established in the Old Testament, and Jesus changed that saying ""Whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life". B) Even if transgender people go to hell, they won't be the only one. Basically everyone, including me, deserves to go to hell. But that does not mean we will. So, yeah, I can be a hypocrite, and yeah, I'm definitely not a perfect Christian. But that still does not change the fact the transgender people are as "gross" as everyone else.

I know I’m crazy late to this clip, but I want to take a moment and individually acknowledge everyone’s reactions and how meaningful they were. Andrea: Almost immediately begins to cry from the shock and grief at someone being outed. Her empathy for Zeke really struck me. Ozzy: Says little, but calls Varner out at the first lull of the conversation. No words minced, he is the first to state Varner is willing to sacrifice his integrity for money. Tai: There are thee things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the wrath of a gentle man. Sarah: Like Ozzy, she minces no words in pinpointing the malice of Varner’s comments. It’s lovely to see her own personal growth shine here too. Debbie: Strong mom energy here, laying down lines in no uncertain terms to protect someone who was just attacked. Jeff: Man, his face at 0:20. This was a hard moment to host, but he did it so well. He asked keen questions of everyone, helped them process their reactions, and most importantly gave Zeke a platform to tell his own story. Zeke: There’s nothing I can say that he didn’t say best himself. But I was especially touched by his concern of being reduced to just one aspect of himself - and how he’s been able to overcome. Here’s to Zeke, the Survivor. I won’t say much about Varner other than this - Even allies can carry internalized prejudices they don’t recognize until it shows itself in ugly ways. This is a good reminder that we should always be carefully reflecting on our actions and words. There’s ugliness buried in all of us, and hopefully grace and redemption available too.

But then they are complaining about this guy calling it a deception? In what context. If (almost) everyone agrees it's wrong to trick people into intimate relationships, why is it okay in other situations? Is the guy that discovered it supposed to play pretend, and tell the other survivors that it's really a guy? So now he has to lie as well as the transgender has been doing. What if he was asked about it, still has to lie to cover for her and say he didn't know the biological gender? It's similar to someone wearing a bigfoot costume, and we're not allowed to reveal that it's just a regular dude underneath. Nah we have to all play along and lie to people that it's a real bigfoot. @@mrtee3988 He's playing a game with these people. His gender or sexuality is in no way part of the game. A relationship is based on honesty, the game of Survivor is not. So it's totally different. @@soldaten-norbert8520 Really, why isn't survivor based on honesty? Do you have to lie to win or something? They could all play honestly, some choose not to. You wouldn't need to divulge things to strangers, primarily because why would they even care if you're just someone passing in the street. But in any relationship whether it is platonic or not, they are engaging in deception. Same as a spy uses a disguise. What if it's a business associate, you're going to start lying right away? They shouldn't tell their parents about the disguise? I don't think you've thought this all the way through. There's actually been incidents when the guy has claimed he identifies as a woman and then abuses real women in prison or the toilets. There's an infamous case recently at a spa. I'm also still wondering if you think people that know the true identity are supposed to lie on behalf of the person in a costume, you didn't answer that at all. If you found out are you going to lie to your mom or daughter about it? Or just the people that aren't your family? Which is the case in this survivor show by the way... Apparently he was supposed to conceal it on her behalf, and play along with the scam. Let's just make this very simple: Some people say the lying is fine in "some" or all situations. The rest of us say be upfront and don't deceive people. That's it.

I think we see a difference in generations within the LGBT as well here. Varner is from a time where coming out as a gay person is very hard, and when you are openly gay, you should always be proud of that and openly talk about that with everyone you start to know. Zeke is from a different generation, where coming out is much more accepted, but where that proudness is gone to the background more. They want to be regarded as humans, and be judged on their acts. Zeke wants to be known as Zeke the man/human, not specifically Zeke the gay/trans guy. So when Varner had suspicions that Zeke was trans, he couldn't understand why he never brought that up. plus Zeke was in season 33 (aired after shooting this season). He must've thought that a transgender on that season was outed already as the 'first transgender in Survivor'. He was wrong. Ps. may I say that the video title that you're using pisses me off, capslocking it makes it sensational
@MichelleRLevy7 жыл бұрын
I think it is less a generational thing than the difference between being gay and being trans. Gay people coming out of the closet get to be their authentic self by publicly being able to be in relationships with the people they love. Trans people being their authentic selves are just men and women, and want to live their lives as men and women, and not be seen as "other." Not all trans people choose to be stealth, but there's no shame in wanting to keep that info private except for "need to know" circumstances.

This is why many of us choose not to disclose the information to everyone but only few special ppl. Gay people do not have this issue, about being invalidated once outed, at least to the level we do. Someone at work found out he was trans and started spreading it so he ended up telling a bunch of us himself a few people I guess already knew but I will never forget him telling me and I and told him I genuinely had no idea whatsoever and I would’ve never known if he didn’t say anything told him I loved him and made sure he was still coming out to hang after work. He was my best friend and I miss him so much everyday. I will never forget the smile on his face after that conversation and I know he valued that moment so much as well ❤ always was so fiercely protective of my other brother bff❤

The most unpopular man on television right now. I wouldn't want to be him. (AND he lost his chance at a million dollars.. Bummer!)

I know! When he got all upset about it and started apologising, all I could hear was regret that he'd misjudged the others' reactions and that he might now get voted off. He talked about doing this earlier, so it was a calcuated move.

The most unpopular man on tv is Trump, dumbass.

Were he not gay, that would probably be a career-ending move, which is even worse.

I will literally never forget watching this when it aired. My dad and I always watch Survivor together and never miss an episode. We were both appalled with this. Zeke was absolutely amazing in handling this situation

I don't watch Survivor, but jeeeeesus that was rough. On the one hand, I'm glad that this exists as a concrete example of how shitty it is to out somebody, and it's really nice to see everybody else sticking up for Zeke. No, actually, it's *incredibly important* to see everyone else sticking up for Zeke. On the other hand... wow. It's scary to think of what could have happened if the others hadn't been as accepting.

Varner is 100% never coming back He is like, “Why did you not tell anybody your trans” then 5 seconds later said “I thought everybody knew”

But you know what’s beautiful in all of this? They rallied around Zeke in a heartbeat, it didn’t matter what had happened prior to that but when Varner outed him the reaction was instantaneous no questions asked. And Probst handled this situation well, he was very upset by the situation and did not give sympathy, didn’t pretend to be okay with it, but immediately shut it down and skipped the vote. But of course the best reaction? Zeke by a long shot. Comforting Varner like that and remaining poised and even being able to sit there like that and keep his composure, that takes so much and Zeke truly was incredible. Sad he didn’t win but he will forever be remembered for this
