If you love fishing crayfish patterns this is a must have for your box.
It is a combination of many patterns I have tied and tested over the years and finally love the way this one fishes and is tied. There is nothing new about some of the things I have done with this Crayfish that make it different than others besides the 3 cones of hackle to create the head and minimize the arm fouling. Along with using the tab legs to create a shell, which isnt new, but using the mono to not cut the tab legs and covering in a good resin makes this fly bullet proof to last many many fish piercings.
I cover the eye in UV resin because I am usually stripping and jigging this in through the rocks or shallows on a floating line. It can be simply dropped and jigged, the weight will place it in a defensive position and the arms being made of rabbit will naturally trap air causing them to rise making it vulnerable to any fish looking for a snack.
It is more time consuming than other Crayfish patterns I have fished, but this is way more effective and way more durable than others I have tied while also minimizing materials needed. I love this Black/Orange Magnum Rabbit strip color and also fish them in dark olives can crayfish orange.
I typically fish this from the shore casting at angles and stripping it across the rocks with quick strips and long pauses to allow it to rest in the defensive position with claws up. I also have cast it towards the banks from a float tube but try to strip parallel to the shoreline. Almost always to I fish with floated line.
Thanks for watching and as always please comment below for any suggestions or questions and click subscribe.

Mike Skinner this is not my simplest cray fish but I think the lifelike in the water makes up for the extra time. Sometimes when I tie them too lifelike they don’t hold up too well, this one is durable and lasts many fish

I tied up a few of these for a Michigan trip. It's a GREAT pattern. Takes some time to tie but is well worth it. This fly looks alive in the water, even when it's just sitting there. Twitch it and it looks just like a crayfish. I nailed lots of largemouth bass with it in Saginaw bay last week, and even caught a bofin. It should work on smallies and catfish too. One change I made is from rabbit strip claws to raccoon which I find more durable. I'll be trying this as a lobster pattern for Stripers in Long Island Sound soon.

Svend, this is about the coolest craw pattern I’ve ever seen. I’m a bass lake guy, does it work well in lakes and what type of line, presentation and technique? Yes, I’m going for all the secrets, lol. I know several guys from that article in Flyfisherman Mag about the goal of catching a 10 pound bass on a fly; I’m on that quest as well. I have the lake near me and it’s only 90 acres, great chance there as several 10+ lbs have been pulled from there.. Thanks in advance!
@Svenddiesel
@Svenddiesel 3 жыл бұрын
A 10 lber would be epic. Locally I can’t seem to break the 4lb large mouth and small mouth threshold but I know they exist. I fish it on floating line from the bank adjusting the leader to reach the depths I need while still being able to cast the size I am casting. Depending on the lake or structure, I sometimes quickly strip it as a retreating craw and let them come out and chomp it (always fun to watch). Other times I let it sit and do small twitches and then let it rest and repeat. There isn’t really secrets other than playing around with what your lake seems to like and adjusting to depth and structure.
@jeffcollins1172

Yea, our water is not all that clear, about 3 ft visibility . This lake has very limited bank fishing, but I fish out of a float tube. I’ve already got a 5 pounder this year and last year got my PB 6.1 lbs. The Day I caught my 5 lbr, my buddy caught a 5,7,8 and 9 lb all on conventional gear; Swimbaits. Now it seems they are favoring crawdad. I didn’t have a crawdad pattern but after I left I realized a simple wooly bugger might have worked. Sometimes I over think the situation.

I really appreciate all the thought that went into this pattern...and I'm excited to start tying some up. Thanks so much for the excellent job you've done in sharing it here. I do think I'll include weed guards on a few of my ties...cuz dem bass seem to be hanging out in the weedy places sometimes. I've not done a whole bunch of this bass fishing with bugs, though. Can you recommend a particular weed guard style you have found that you like?
@Svenddiesel
@Svenddiesel 3 жыл бұрын
You can either loop it from the back up and over and tie off at the front of the hook with some 40-60lb mono. You can also bend the mono at an angle and have it stick straight up to block weeds off the hook point. Both are about sixes but I generally do the loop method when adding a weed guard
