A month ago, my daughter found a Great Horned Owl that had its head run over and crushed. This is a learning project which I CANNOT FAIL! It's already headless, so what could I possibly do to make it worse? When I'm finished using this as a practice project, I mean to give it a stuffed animal head, putting it into the category of "Bad Taxidermy" and possibly donating it to a friend who teaches nature education to children. A bizarre and silly creation like that is something the kids could touch and look at up close, because again, damaging feathers just wouldn't matter. I've been doing skull displays and tanning furs for years now, and people have asked me if I'd like to taxidermy birds they find. I haven't been confident about coping with the structure of feathers, or with building the internals of a body and limbs, so I've either done wing and tail wands or just taken a pass on these projects. Thank you so much for creating this channel! Between this headless owl to practice on, and finding your detailed demonstrations, I think I'm finally ready to give this thing a try.

I know you pinned the wings at the end to keep them proped up...but what holds them in place permantly?? Do they just dry out and keep the form?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 3 жыл бұрын
Yes , when you pin them to dry, they will stay that way when fully dried. I also re enforce them with caulking that is injected under the skin.

Can I ask what are the benefits of drying the bird after installing body and sewing vs b4?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 3 жыл бұрын
Saving time , keeping the skin moist for maximum length of time, seeing much better where feather tracks are supposed to line up.

@@ArtofTaxidermy can you do this on ducks/grouse as well?
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 3 жыл бұрын
@@SWTORNERDGAMING Yes, I do it on all of my birds except Turkey.. Turkey feathers are too heavy when they are wet. I half dry the turkey to make it a bit lighter, then mount and final blow dry after its fully mounted.

How are you able to do predatory birds? Is the laws there different or can you do so because you're a falconer or have some other type of papers to allow you? I'd love to be able to do work on birds in the future after I go to taxidermy school, and I'm planning on getting my falconry license.
@ArtofTaxidermy
@ArtofTaxidermy 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the laws in Canada are different. Found dead wild raptors can be permitted to possess to the person who found it.
@paintedwings74
@paintedwings74 Жыл бұрын
I sometimes work on animals that are illegal for me to possess, then give the projects to a couple of people with educator licenses from the DNR. As long as they are not legally mine and they technically belong to the people with the license to have them, I don't get into trouble by working on them. (Working in this way means I can't sell my work, but I'm not at a stage of learning where that's even an issue yet.)
