Hey everyone, back with another video featuring my 1997 Ford Ranger XLT. In this video, we swap out the stock Ford 8.8 with a 31 Spline Ford 8.8 from a Ford Explorer. This swap not only gives you much stronger 31 spline axle shafts, but also full disk brakes all around the truck. Hope this helps if you're looking to swap your rear axle out in your Ranger!

Great work. All I can say is I'm thankful my 2008 Ranger Sport was optioned from the factory with the 8.8 with limited slip. It's got no rust on the body has less then 50k miles and has the 4.0. I just got it last year and figured I'd have to get an 8.8 out of an Explorer but this evening I looked under the truck and got the axle code off the door sticker. It was a nice suprise.

How did you determine where to weld the new spring perches at to get the right pinion angle?

The book provides you with pinion angles. I don't recall what book I got but it provides me with everything someone would need doing that. Once you got your pinion angle degree there's probably a lot of measuring to be done 😂

Pinion angle is 6 degrees. There's a write up on the ranger station forums.

I'm doing this like currently and need to know did you skip re-ataching the sway bar dealio that you took off with the original rear axle? I'm struggling to find the mounting gear for the larger explorer axles that connect the original sway bar to the new axle

Curious...the Exploder axle is supposedly 1" longer. Did you space the front wheels or just ignore it? (perfectly acceptable, IMHO) I'll be doing the same swap with truss and 3-link + panhard (and 5.13's...and a Tru-track), also got the Yukon chromoly axle kit with c-clip eliminator....adds another inch I have to compensate for.

I used the explorer axle as is in my 87 ranger, I used a stock steel wheel from a later model crown Vic and had them widened 2" this setup would tuck into the wheel well. It ended up being a 9.5" wide wheel with a 8" backspace for this to work. With the axle another inch wider on each side it may be more challenging to find a wheel to work. Good luck!

Did you keep the stock lug pattern or did you change the axles? And what year explorer did you pull the rear end from?

Nice work! When you went to weld the new spring perches, did you just measure to get it exactly on the other side of the axle tube (180 degrees)? Or did you choose another method?

You need to set it based on the pinion flange angle. Pinion flange should be angled 6 degrees up with the spring perches level.

I don't think he knows. His buddy did all the work. Most folks set them at 6°

Hey man, it's up to you but at the driving montage at 14:50 it looks like your alignment is off. Looking at the tire it looks like it is pointing outwards a little. It may just be me, or it could be something worth noting.

Do the rear disk brakes make stopping that much better?

Yes BUT, the peddle feels different. Calipers seem to take more fluid to move than drums, so the 8.8 calipers seem slower to engage. They still wirk fine with the stock master cylinder, but they feel different.
