Things You Need To Know Before Getting a Pool

From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... this video talks about four things that you really should know before you commit to buying a pool or having a new swimming pool installed. Not everyone realizes how much of a commitment owning and caring for a pool can be, and that is why generally people who get a pool (and are happy they did) are people that actually use the pool all the time. Another reality of pool ownership is that owning a pool is a safety liability and you can never become complacent about safety when it comes to pools. Accidents happen very quickly and so you must accept the onus of responsibility as a pool owner to create and maintain a safe swimming pool area at all times.
The final reality of pool ownership that you need to be aware of and accept is that pools WILL break eventually and pretty much all swimming pool repairs and replacement equipment will be expensive. There are very few surprisingly affordable repairs when it comes to inground swimming pools and so even when you pool is still new you should be starting a savings fund for small and not-so-small repairs that will come up from time to time.

Great advice as usual, Steve. I always advise people to never install a pool for the kids. Swimming is great for the kids of course, but if you and your spouse aren't that enthusiastic don't do it. What I did years ago was buying a used above ground as a test. Wife and I used it every day , and maintenance was not a problem, so we went for a nice in ground.

I've replaced vinyl liner myself, replaced equipment... none of what I've had to do was as expensive as you describe. But most people I presume rely on others, pool people, to replace liners, etc. My pool was a diy pool kit. I couldn't have had one any other way.

Inground pool prices are crazy here now. Over 100k for a concrete vinyl lined 25k gallon and 250k or so for a custom concrete tiled pool with some features. I thought about ripping out our former and replacing with the later but it was a solid build and I’d rather build a full bar kitchen around it which is more likely to recoup some value when we sell and move at retirement time than a rip and replace.

Steve isn’t wrong. Maintaining my Ferrari is vastly more affordable than my pool. 😂

Hey Steve, New here. I have a Intex above ground pool. 32'x16' x52". I don't feel the pump it comes with is strong enough. What type of pump would you recommend?

Number one thing you need to know is that sand filters are crap compared to cartridge. Also, you need an electric pool sweep. Water-driven does not compare.

Cartridge filters are super effective, but they require much more frequent maintenance. Sometimes you can reduce this by oversizing the filter, but for larger pools you can't always do that easily... There's also the issue of waste. Throwing away a single cartridge filter when it has reached the end of its life doesn't seem like much, but over the decades, that's a literal small mountain of trash your pool will generate. Sand filters are a lot more eco friendly in comparison because the media lasts a lot longer (many years), and it's not a highly processed product made of paper/fabric and plastics/metal...

Sand filters with zeolite media are amazing and bring your filtration down to 5 microns from 20-40.

@@int0x2e I rinse my RENEWABLE cartridges. They show no wear and tear after years of service. Can’t see replacing them ever, honestly. I also only clean them (4), three times a year, including when I close. Would clean just twice but we have lots of botanical debris entering the pool in spring. With sand, I was backwashing, draining, my pool, constantly into early summer, and the water was always cloudy, never crystal clear like it is now. I hated the pool when it was limping along on inferior equipment. Now I love it.

@@lordgarth1 But I’m still constantly backwashing in spring and early summer. HATED backwashing.

I've had my pool since 2009 and still have the sand filter. I did replace the sand once but don't think it was necessary. I've never had a problem with sand filter. I use skimmer socks to minimize what gets to the filter. It also minimizes backwashing.
