Switching with the new "Proto Throttle" from ISE

Here's something a little different, I wanted to show a new product which is really neat and innovative in the Model Railroad industry. The "Proto Throttle" produced by Iowa Scaled Engineering. It features a DCC controller that is made to resemble an EMD control stand complete with levers for notching, braking, reverser, horn, etc. as well as several buttons and knobs for controlling the lights manually just like the prototype. As you can see it's quite enjoyable to switch with and goes a long way in helping you feel more authentic as if you were operating the real thing!
This setup is using an LNWI to connect to a Digitrax system although the throttle can also be used with ESU, JMRI, NCE, etc. The locomotive is equipped with LokSound but the controls work great with TCS Wow Sound, Soundtraxx Tsunami and others. All that is needed is adjusting some of the settings to get the notching, braking and lights working correctly. For more information check out:

this throttle is SWEET... this is EXACTLY how the real thing operates... modelers get the real feel of what it's like to operate a locomotive... nice vid

Looks like a lot of fun. I got tickled watching you hunt the lever you wanted to use. After 37 years running that throttle hanging out the window forward or backing up looking for signals, setting the train line air, bailing off the engine brakes, adjusting the throttle and blowing the whistle and turning on the stinking bell all without looking or turning around you get used to where everything is without thinking about it.🤪😂

Absolutely, of all the model train products this is probably my favorite piece! It makes operations feel less like running model trains and more like the real thing

Very fine video! Getting to the reprogramming/upgrading my locomotives step now. The programmed throttle is awesome! Thanks for sharing! Three point is throttle off, reverser neutral and brake set. That protects your conductor or fingers……. Enjoy!!!

I was trying to figure out what wireless DCC throttle to get when I upgrade to better hardware. I was looking at the ECU LocControl (I think it's called) with the little PDA and the throttle knob for ease of switching between several units. But.. In reality I very rarely have more than one unit moving at a time anyway and this little piece of kit looks INCREDIBLE.

ghoststalker44 Mostly lighting functions, each output for headlight, dim headlight, ditch lights, etc. need to be controllable from a separate function to work on the Proto Throttle. Also you need to set the acceration/deceleration and braking values high for best results.

It is compatible with a NCE system with a ProtoThrottle to NCE Receiver. Mine is being shipped now, and will be connected to a NCE Power Pro - 5amp System.

No, this type of controller is only for diesels

@@BradleyDCC I had that figured out already thanks, was merely curious whether the manufacturer had a steam version (they don't). It's a neat controller, but too pricey at $500 a pop.

Maybe they will consider a steam version or at least other types of diesel controllers once this one gains more popularity. I think the price is worth it 100%, I enjoy every minute of switching with it. A completely different experience than the "knob" type controller.

@@BradleyDCC I certainly hope so, but I think that if it is going to reach a larger audience, the price will have to come down significantly, or be offered as a full DCC system (or a pack-in deal with a system) as opposed to just a throttle. Not saying I'm not a fan, I think it's an amazing bit of kit, just needs a steam engine version and a price drop. Appreciate the responses all the same!
