Lyman-Morse’s newest sailboat, designed by Stephens Waring Yacht Design, is coming together quite beautifully. The embodiment of a Spirit of Tradition yacht, Anna is perfect for both day sailing and racing. Lyman-Morse’s in-house production-design team and CAD engineers work with precision to choreograph the information delivered from SWYD. The LM team is on full-time turning this architectural wonder into reality. Their work made the planking of the first three layers of the cold-molded hull a seamless endeavor. They gave themselves a 2-hour window to complete this section. They beat it with a half hour to spare!

This bought back some memories. I started my apprenticeship working on cold molded yachts at Souter of Cowes in 1976. Epoxy had not really come into use then. We used aerodux resorcinal resin, and each layer of planks had to be stapled down using 1/8" toggle ply strips, then hammered down hard, removing all the ply strips afterwards. All the staple holes got filled at the paint/ varnish stage.

Was the nailgun just tracking the planking in place to hold it until the glue cures? Will the nails be removed?

How on earth did these guys get the first strip planked layer airtight? Was it Sheathed in Glass snd fill coated beforehand?

that is what I was thinking .... . how they could get airtight just half of the hull....

All I can figure is whatever seal they got from a few precoats of epoxy over the wood, likely paired with a MASSIVE air compressor and venturi pump to overcome any minor leaks.. Notice the vacuum was turned on by opening air lines.. leads me to believe they overcome any minor leaks with the brute force of a giant compressor just a guess

There are longitudinal cedar strips, glued in shape on a temporary set of formers to provide an air-tight first layer. The layers of veneer are already applied to a "closed" hull shape.
