The first 4 minutes or so of this video is for you DIYers. I will show you how to identify a bad ignition coil with just a simple test light. The rest of this video I will be showing how to ID a bad coil using both primary current and secondary voltage waveforms on a scope. Finally I will show you how to determine what caused the coil to fail as well as how to repair a plug wire that is damaged, when you are in a pinch.
For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.
Want even more diagnostic training? Whether you are a DIY trying to fix your own car, someone looking to become an auto technician, or a current auto technician that wants to get more into diagnostics, subscribe to ScannerDanner Premium www.scannerdanner.com/join-sc... There is a 14 day free trial.
On ScannerDanner Premium I will bring you right into my classroom at Rosedale Technical College. You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. There is no better on-line training of how to troubleshoot automotive electrical and electronics systems anywhere!

Good vid man. I do those "field repairs" on wires quite often & the tip for stressing the wire while cutting is a great tip to keep from cutting into the carbon center. Usually I'll just take the razor all the way around & pull off the outer wire. Sometimes the razor does nip the carbon center requiring me to cut the end flush & start over. That's whats great about working on cars, you never really know everything. Thanks for the vid, you do an excellent job & want you to know it is appreciated in Spokane, Washington. Keep up the good work!

This video was a GREAT tool. My 2006 Chrysler Town and Country had a #2 misfire and I simply seen this video and did the test light trick and the same thing happened just like this video. You are so AMAZING in your lessons. The way you explain everything. Is just perfect. You are my forever go to mechanic on learning online. I'm having issues with the p0300 but I changed the coil and ignition control module and still no spark on the new 3&6. Also change spark plugs and wires. I am stamped. I have fuses in both boxes some work. Some don't on perfectly good fuses. I'll figure it out. I get more and more troubleshooting info. The more I watch your videos. Thank you so much for doing this for us. The money you are saving so many people abs education you give us is powerful.

What are you working on? Year, make, model and engine size? Thanks! I can help further. If it is a Chrysler or Dodge with a waste spark coil assembly. (4 pin plug) the next test im going to have you do is with a test light on the control wires for the coil. I have some videos on this too. I'd be in my chapter 22 playlist right here on YT

Mr ScannerDanner, you are a God send! I was able to identify the exact problem with my 2005 3.8L Chrysler TC. The number four coil was no spark at all. All others were good spark. NOTE: I don't like eels either. Got the jolt lol. But I learned how to use the tester as in your video. I think I had a bad plug, then a bad wire, then the bad coil. Just like you mentioned in your video. I am going to get the new coil. I already got new plugs, and cleaned the air intake (really nasty) and put on some new wires. Thanks for your valuable information.

This is a waste spark system then? It has a coil pack with three coils in it. So again, no, a single coil failure would give you a 2 cylinder misfire, not a complete no start.

Who makes the probe you used in the 3rd test ? I am having trouble with a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 , with the 4.0 engine .... I have a dead miss on cylinder 6 , but I do not know how to test the big "6 pack" coil on the jeeps .... Ive done a few tests that point to the coil , like turning off the fuel injectors , ect ............. Cylinders 1 and 6 are connected by the coil , cylinder 1 has spark (and fuel )(evident when I shut the injector off ) but I can not figure out how to test #6 (the idol actually improves 75-100 rpm when #6 injector is turned off ) ............. On the exhaust all 5 cylinders have an average temp of 350* , cylinder 6 is at 120* .... I can smell fuel in the exhaust like its running rich ............. But the other problem I am having is the Jeep will not stay running unless I am on the gas (4 out of 5 times , the 5th time it will idol but it is really rough ) ..... .............................................. I had a random misfire code , so I swapped the spark plugs (they were due) .. After I swapped them , the jeep ran great for about 5 min .... When I tried to back out of the driveway everything took a turn south ................. Now it is sitting in my driveway and I am stuck ... But I do not want to throw parts at it ... 150$ coil is not exactly swap friendly ... All of the other sensors ect are reading ok , but every time the jeep misfires the ASD relay tries to turn the jeep off ....... If I stay on the gas you can feel the engine turning on and off with the ASD relay ............... CKP seems to be ok , but I am not sure what I am looking for on the scope , I have the 4 triggers grouped on the graph like the tech manual shows but I dont know what I am looking for otherwise to make sure the CKP is working properly .......................................................... ANY help would be appreciated , this is my wife's Jeep and our only car at the moment ......... ( ohh and I do have your book , but I am more of a visual learner ... So seeing how its done or being shown what I am looking for works better for me than reading and trying to incorporate that into a test ......)

I developed a technique of long needle nose or pliers of choice with a reliably attached jumper wire to ground, spark it all day and it chooses pliers over you every time. one time after I pulled a poor insulating wire off a coil while leaning over a car, if your not grounding your body on the car it's not so bad but if you're other hand is planted or leaning on the fender you give the circuit a return path to ground and the increased current causes exceptionally more stun gun effect/pain, hurts, every single time lol. knowing this I hover when doing this, but one time a bad combo of little too small work pants/possible faulty belt position caused my man bulge to be the closest thing to the car by the fender, my hand was directly on the wire so direct connection there, I was looking down and litterly saw the arc go on the return path to ground out of my zipper area. that's right manhood to ground arc. oddly my hand hurt like hell but just got a strong tingle I'd rather not feel again down there.

Hi Paul. Another great video. One question however. Around 3:40 you say that since #4 isn't firing you should check the #4 wire and plug (to make sure that wasn't the cause of the coil failure, I assume). My comment is that when you jumped the #4 wire/plug with your test light we had no spark. When you jumped #3 we do have spark. Wouldn't that imply that the #4 wire and plug are OK(-ish) and that the #3 wire/plug is where the problem is? I.e. when you jump the #3, the waste-spark had no trouble passing though the block and back through the #4 plug and wire. Also, since things do fire with #3 wire/plug jumped, doesn't that imply the coil is actually OK? All of this is assuming this is a waste-spark system. I'm probably wrong as I'm pretty new to all of this. I'm just trying to learn all I can.

Hey Paul, cool emergency roadside plug wire repair! Nothing like a few KV to keep you awake through the day right? lol I have a quick question about the primary current ramp: how do you explain the different signature and lack of turn-on oscillations on the primary current ramp? That secondary winding still seems functional, as the companion cyl still has a good spark...
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 8 жыл бұрын
+motoYam82 Not sure I can. In this case it is one of those things that may help ID a buried coil (one you can't get to) in the future. With one tower shorted out, there was a difference in that ramp with both the turn on oscillations and the arc of the ramp. But I'm just stating the obvious there.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 8 жыл бұрын
+ScannerDanner Cool, definitely a great idea to compare a known-good and known-bad on the same car. Possible explanation for the different current ramp...might be completely off here but just thinking from basic principles: Since the secondary winding is shorted to the coil pack base on one tower (internal damage), the charges in that winding circuit now have less "room" to move. Basically the CAPACITANCE of one entire spark plug wire is now out of the picture. This would mean that the secondary could not respond to counter the magnetic field of the primary as well as before. Thus it is slightly easier to build up the current in the primary, and the turn-on oscillations (feedback via mutual inductance) are reduced in amplitude. I guess a completely shorted secondary winding would be an extreme case of this scenario... Sound plausible? Ignition waveforms are always the trickiest to analyze :)

In October my car was misfiring after idling for a few minutes. Turned out I had a burned out spark plug & dirty fuel injectors. Replaced and cleaned, put lucas in gas tank. Ran fine until today. Now it's dying again at idle, engine jerks once when I come to a stop and I notice the loss in power like crazy. I have a catback exhaust and sound is significantly quieter. No lights on my dashboard, but took it to autozone to run diagnostics and nothing came up. Do you think this is a burned out coilpack?

I have a 94 deville. Shacks bad and lacks power like krazy. I changed the fuel filter which was clogged full of gunk. But still shacks and lacks power. I think it's the spark plugs. Also car is not throwing and trouble codes at all other than ac being bad. So should I take eack coil off of the distributor cap using the test light and if I get a spark that means good I'd not means bad coil?

There is a great rubber lube right there Paul. Brake fluid is the best thing I've ever used and won't harm a thing. Motor oil no so good.

I have a 06 GTO and the computer says random misfire. Most of the time if you drive it a bit the misfire goes away. But if you stop and turn the car off then start it back, it acts up again until you drive it a bit again.

Great video!!! very helpful. I replaced the spark plugs and wires as they had 80k on them. In doing so I created an incredible miss fire. After verifing that the firing order was correct, I used your method to test coil and found the coil to operate. Then I tested the BRAND NEW wires and found 2 loose terminals.(without getting a jolt). Even still, in park or neutral this vehicle seems to act as being rev limited at 2700-2800. Although during test drive I was able to accelerate throughout rpm range. Can you suggest any solution? Is this the coil pack "going"...Any info would be appreciated! 2006 Chrysler t&c 3.8l I am subscribing!!!

There is a rev limiter on these when in park or neutral. If it is running good now then you are fine.

Thanks for your video Paul. When you are using a test light to check ignition spark, how do you tell that the spark has enough energy? sometimes I'm not sure if the spark is strong enough when using the test light. from Freddie in Australia.

+HYUNHO LEE I look for at least a half inch arc with most coils producing about an inch. (25.4mm I think)

Bought old 1994 Toyota 4Runner, V6 3.0. Starts fine, warms up fine, then starts to miss when warm. Timing mark jumps around, all plug wires fire erratically. Eventually sounds like it will stall. ANY feedback welcome. THANKS.
