Description: What an unpleasant thing to live with, health anxiety. What's even more troubling is the fact that traditional treatments for health anxiety and the symptoms of anxiety that come with it simply don't work very well. I remember going to doctor after doctor, emergency room after emergency room due to my symptoms of anxiety and the intense fear that a real physical problem was present.
I was given a clean bill of health over and over again and was told that my problems were in my mental health, but no 'professional' got to the root of the problem. The root of the problem of health anxiety is adrenaline. It's a simple formula:
intense worrying + a mind and body that won't relax = an increased cycle of adrenaline which leads to increased health anxiety.
During my six years of health anxiety, I didn't relax even for a second. In fact, I forgot what feeling at peace and having a calm body and mind felt like after a while. I would often begin by focusing my worrying on something which would cause my adrenaline-fueled 'fight or flight' response to kick in. This adrenaline response always had a series of physical symptoms of anxiety: pounding heart, shortness of breath, tingling in my hands and feet, and dizziness.
I would instantly worry that these physical symptoms of anxiety were indicating a heart attack or a stroke. Even though this always happened in the same way, I would convince myself that I was going to die as a result of these feelings, and would race to the nearest medical centre or emergency room. It was taking over my life and ruining my career and my relationships. I had to do something to change this course in my life.
I did a lot of research on adrenaline; I finally was able to take this problem in hand and came up with a solution to help with this crippling cycle.
The key to lessening the adrenaline cycle that is causing your health anxiety is taking 'mini vacations' throughout the day.
Here's what I did:
I began with 3 'mini vacations' per day (planning is key) - one in the am just before breakfast, one at lunch and one just before going to sleep at night. I realized that this was the 'me time' I needed, far away from anything that needed to be done, whether that was with work, tennis training, relationships or whatever. I took the 10 minutes of freedom that I gave myself and used it to do progressive muscle relaxation, acupressure, squeezing a stress ball, sitting and listening to classical music etc.
The key for me was variety during my 'mini vacations' from the adrenaline cycle that affected my health anxiety. As soon as I felt the worrying or physical sensations coming on, I would find a quiet place and take this time away for myself.
The more I took my 'mini vacations,' the better my health anxiety got. But as mentioned earlier, planning is key. Why? Because people who suffer from generalized anxiety and, more specifically, health anxiety can become quite impatient and require quick results before saying that something just doesn't work. They become so fed up with their condition and just want to move on with what's important in their lives.
Can you blame a health anxiety sufferer for wanting results now? So, plan out what you will be doing during your time with your mini vacations during the day, look at it as a long term 'plan,' and watch your levels of adrenaline that fuel your health anxiety lessen as time goes by.

I’m so glad you exist. Anxiety has been the hardest thing to deal with in my life EVER. (More than my parents) my problem is something happens... I get worried and bam... GAD. Mainly health anxiety though. It likes to transform into health anxiety. Mainly my heart due to having a palpitation from drinking caffeine late at night when I was 13. Now all these past things come back once and awhile. My mind gets fuzzy... my brain thinks about blood pressure/rate... hearing that ringing in my ear... losing control and my legs and arms feeling numb. I am still fighting and the pressures of life don’t help. Hopefully, I can reach a breakthrough with my brain... and settle the negative ways I’ve been taught to think so many years ago. Or i will.

Cool.. I'll give that a go.. Lately I've not been able to relax at all, because I'm uneasy all the time for no apparent reason.. There is no reason why I should be anxious at all, but somehow I can't switch off.. All I want to do is relax & enjoy myself like family & friends do!! It's worse when you can't pinpoint what's making me feel so uneasy & anxious..

I’m so tired of this anxiety shit guys. I was a very energetic, confident, and adventurous person But recently I’m completely the opposite. I shut myself out of everything. My classes, my hobbies, my friends. Everything. The worse part is I feel like I’m letting everyone down by having this. I’m just so tired. It’s as if I died already and came back to life only with my body being dragged around. Sigh.

You arent alone. My anxiety lately has gotten so intense. I drag myself out of bed. It effects me physically. Fatigue, recently I get tiny blisters that apparently occur due to stress, aches in my legs, lump in throat, sweaty hands and feet, and of course I've gone for blood work, xrays, ultrasounds stool samples, urine tests. Doctors have repeatedly said I'm perfectly healthy. It drives me nuts. It has negative effects on my family, my work, my social life. Anxiety is a tough one but I wont stop fighting through it. Stay strong. Sometimes I feel fine and then I'll go weeks feeling like I'm dying. Just know there are people that understand how you feel.

My symptoms start with a negative feeling that something is wrong. My heart starts palpitating, intense tingling and pins and needles like I have fireworks inside my veins, hot flashes that burn my skin, butter mouth, hyperventilating, weak knees, diarrhoea, nausea, sweaty palms and feet, nerves misfiring like I'm bitten by thousands of fire ants. Accept those anxious feelings. They are a blessing. Invite them into you. Know that they are harmless. Your thoughts mean nothing. It’s just chatter. Notice them and let them go like clouds. They mean nothing. Realizing these truths are the way through. Life is a game of opposites. What we resist will persist. Surrender and resist nothing. This is the path to end suffering. This really isn’t complicated, so don’t make it.

It's really not that easy and by having people around you not understand you is even worse.I try to tell myself it's just in my head it will pass but my mind is doing the complete opposite.I have tried soooo many times to fight the thoughts but my mind is only telling me to hear them out which leads to overthinking which causes panic attacks and the worst thing that could ever happen was to have a panic attack in public.People would think i am dying which only made me panic more.Everything leads to another one till it gets to the point when i feel numb or i cry my eyes out and move on with my so called life.

With you 100% on the facial numbness. It’s the weirdest and scariest. I also had the lump in my throat feeling about 2 years ago that took weeks to go away. Went to the Dr and ER multiple times for it. All of it boiled back to anxiety and stress. The facial numbness is super annoying though. I had it a while back and it went away and now it is back again. I know it’s stress and anxiety for sure. It’s in my cheeks and under my eyes. It gets bad at times and other times it’s just slight numbness

This video just changed my life. I just got back from the ER. Panic attack while driving. Hyperventilating lost some vision. No feeling in my face or chest. Palpitations. Full weakness. Called an ambulance off the side of the road. I felt complete loss of control over my body. It took 4 hours in ER to get me down bc I was vomiting and could not breathe at all. I have to say I am not suicidal but if I had to have panic attacks daily it would be the one thing that would make me want to not be here. These videos help me understand I am not alone. It's the only thing I want to know. I am not alone. And people say why oh why what are you worried about? Come one relax blah blah. It's so hard to surround yourself with people who get it. Like hell sometimes I have no clue what started the attack. Anyway thank you so much for this video ❤

I'm 28 and had been dealing with Anxiety since I was 16. It ruined my life growing up because I was going through it alone. All my family and friends laughed at me and always told me to "get over it". However, anxiety is all mental I'm aware but it's a disorder that can take over at any giving time. I did get the hang of it so when I feel my heart racing and warm flushes getting ready to attack I just say to (IT) "hurry up, just hit me already and go"!. Surprisingly it works from time to time. I don't think I'll ever overcome my negative thoughts since death is my main fear but I'm glad it's not what it use to be.

The fear of death was the very fuel for my symptoms of anxiety to become heightened. When I began replacing the idea that fear is the end all be all, with we will become re-incarnated and come back to this planet, it took some pressure off of having to have one go at life.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have a horrible fear of death that started when I was just 10 years old after a very traumatic situation. That led to me abusing drugs to mask the fear and the drugs have caused me to have even worse anxiety. I also contracted Hep C and was told that I am one step away from Cirrhosis and I am only 46. So my Thantaphobia is somewhat justified. The scary thing is that that I have all these new symptoms after stopping Ativan after taking it for 20 years. I swear it is not living it is just existing. My feet tingle whenever I lay down and my neck gets tight like I am not getting enough blood to my brain. I tell myself I am months away from getting Liver Cancer and I am just waiting for the signs to manifest. It is like you are on death row and your date is coming up. I just don't know how to cope with this. Nothing seems to help but more benzos and that is toxic to my liver so... Sigh

I came out of the hospital yesterday after being there for 7 days because of anxiety. It is really rough even now. I'm 23 now and I've been struggling with anxiety for many years. I'm also Jamaica and many ppl around me seem to not understand what I'm going through and it's really discouraging. I'm now trying to find my inner strength to deal with this.

I identified with a number of those symptoms. My healing journey was incremental. Setbacks were difficult to deal with. Over time I gained confidence and was more and more desensitized. Fear was probably at the root of my problem. I tried to implement many of the strategies Dennis outlined over the course of days, weeks, months, and even years. It’s not one single strategy that healed my health anxiety. It took and still takes a lot of patience and perseverance, and a subtle change in mindset. I like Dennis term of being a warrior because that’s really what it takes.

I had a traumatic panic attack a couple weeks ago, thought it was a heart attack, meds said I'm ok (I live in HK). I was feeling much better, and then I read about DVT and PE death in the news. Immediately after reading that article I went into crazy panic mode, and it's 24/7. Ever since then I've had leg pains, 3 ER visits in 2 weeks and 3 blood tests (one d-dimer for DVT and PE check). I will keep following your clips... honestly, I want to break down. I miss whho I used to be, but I'll work hard to be him again. Thanks for posting this for us , if you can do it, I can.

Joe Balsamo start by cleaning up your diet, Knock off any heavy exercise, just light walks. See a naturopath. I started taking magnesium in the morning Also taking magnesium and zinc in the early evening. I cut out meat, gluten, coffee, sugar, alcohol and reduced dairy, after 3 days of doing all of this I slept 8 hours straight and I don't remember ever sleeping like this. I am 43 and know how you feel and yes it's a horrible major diet change but read all the info about how gut health is related to anxiety etc etc. The diet was for 6 weeks but when you are motivated by the symptoms it gets easy after a few days. This isn't the cure but helps get you thinking more rationally to where you can calm the anxiety for me by about 90%. Everything this guy is what I have experienced and it sucks. I'm still trying to clear the almost constant foggy head feeling from the time I get up until I go to sleep but most of the rest was sorted by the dramatic diet change. I have now started to introduce some meat back into my diet but immediately I have taken a few steps backwards but now I just know that my system is not quite ready yet and more patience is required. For me the magnesium seemed to help the most with the heart palpitations and anxiety but be careful because there are different forms of magnesium buy small pots as one type upsets my stomach IBS effect. As I said earlier in my rant ..... See a naturopath or if you have super powers find a doctor who will actually listen but trust me if they haven't experienced it they will try to hook you up with little pink pills and a shrink. Your not crazy, you know what feeling good is like and we all just want to get back to that point. Saying NO to late nights, busy weekends and any added pressure is a big part of this it helps you feel more in control. "Better by the day" is my mantra!!! I also got onto an audio series called FFF by a guy in New Zealand, the guy has been through it and it was a tremendous help. I have no affiliation with any of what I have mentioned but hope it helps someone in someway. Good luck all, apparently it's a time thing, and this is one time when I wish time would fly.

My anxiety has caused me to do zero physical exercise for the last 2 years. Gained 20 pounds. I used to run 18 mikes a week. I come home from work and trip out and lay on the couch and watch tv and search the internet. I got a personal trainer and went to 2 sessions but then convinced myself I am sick and it's been 2 months now and haven't been back. I feel fine and am not sick! I think physical exercise might be very important to pulling myself out of this. I'm single and live alone which allows me too much time to trip out on everything. Work and everything seems so overwhelming.

marco polo I used to hate exercising after I had my first panic attack two years ago. I was scared of the physical symptoms which to me, was than me exercising. I was out of shape, and as a professional ballet dancer... I couldn't accept not exercising or working out. So what I did was start exercising 5 minutes a day. Nothing, rigorous, just simple dancing on KZfaq. Today, I workout everyday for an hour and a half, high cardio. I have lost weight and I am back in great shape. I also began drinking lemon water with mint leaves. I definitely understand what your going thru. But let me tell you, one step at a time. And work up from there! I love the post workout feeling.

I gets tired easily and if i do something a bit heavy, my heart pumps faster and felt dizziness and head spinning around. Besides, i can not tolerate emotions (bad news as well as too good news). But since April 2020, i realised that Jesus is the answer and surrender myself to Jesus. I read Bible everyday pray everyday and once i get the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, all these problems will go away. Apart from that, i will be able to help and pray for others. I have a peace of mind now which is very dear and precious to me because i didn't have it even before i had this panic attack. Give your life to Jesus and he is the Creator of everything and has the power to heal you anytime😊

I am so glad to hear someone else say anxiety set off heart palpitations. I wound up in the ER back in Nov because my heart would flutter occasionally, then one night, a tachycardia set in and my heart started flying and it scared the crap out of me. I went all through my 20's without seeing a doctor for anything, barely got sick, so I was really motivated to have called 911. Now that I'm walking on a treadmill, the anxiety sensations went away, but there are days my heart will have an ectopic or thud a few times a minute, it does it a lot in cold weather. Some days are more frequent than others, other days I don't feel it but once all day. I have stopped eating sweets (except Christmas meals), started eating avocado and spinach daily. Stopped coffee (sucks). Started seeing a GP to have blood tests done. The ER found I had low potassium, but I got it back up in one week with a follow up test. Then the GP's tests found my cholesterol was a little high, but thyroid, kidneys, and liver were all good. Have high blood pressure one day, then low the next. It's crazy. It's like my nervous system does whatever if pleases.

I get it. And I am sorry you go through this. People think we’re crazy. My doctors don’t take me serious because I get so anxious over my health I am always at the doctors office. The weird feelings your body go through and always thinking you have a life threatening illness. You’re not alone. And to hear other people experiencing the same symptoms I’ve been experiencing for years makes me relax. The worst part is when people say get over it or chill out. If I could I would have already done that. It’s literally a living nightmare.

Hey Dennis! Thanks for what you do. I have personally been dealing with these symptoms for four months now. Went to the doctor and got an EKG, blood tests, urine samples, etc. The results came back and they told me that my health was perfect. This brought much concern because I wasn't feeling healthy, lol. I had one major attack and thought I was having a heart attack. Thoughts off dying brought waves of depression. The symptoms come and go and I am able to control them better by focusing my thought pattern on things I love to do....fishing, gardening, etc. Thanks again sir for sharing your story.

Can you also feel like you’re not breathing properly? Like I worry that I’m not getting enough oxygen or something, and then that makes my anxiety worse. But I don’t have trouble breathing when I sleep because I guess it’s just ya know, a natural thing, but even when I wake up I feel the same exact way and I don’t know what to do. I’ve been having anxiety symptoms for the past 2 months. Some of the strangest symptoms I’ve experienced are muscle spasms/twitching all over my body at random times throughout the day, tingling all over body at random times throughout the day, ear pulsing/thumping-like sound, chest pain, headaches, eye twitches, heart palpitations, numbness, and many more. My blood is fine, EKG comes out normal, and my MRI and MRA images of my brain were perfect. I’m starting to lose many of these symptoms day by day. It’s a slow and long process but you have to stay strong. Your mind is incredibly powerful and you have to overcome it. @Anxiety Guy you were spot on with all the symptoms and I’d like to thank you for helping all of us out. Symptoms of anxiety can manifest from one to the other while we become more and more bewildered. When a link between 1 symptoms of anxiety and tension is made, and acceptance has happened another one can pop up. This is why it's important to deal with the root, the greatest fear and in most cases if not all it's the fear of death with health anxiety.

Very helpful. We all want fast change and a straight upward progress line. You explain the need for patience and allowing time and self-compassion in a very believable way because you went through it all. Helen

Seeing someone who's been in other's anxious shoes and has been able to re-condition their mind and body is powerful. It was the main thing that got me moving in the right direction, modelling someone who was already there.

I'm only 5 minutes in and I can't believe how much I relate to the ""This time is different" when in reality they were all the same" part I've been trying to work myself up to start exercising again but I'm just scared of the palpitations, I've trained my mind into being able to stop a panic attack before it even starts so I'm going to do the same with exercise, thanks for this

Literally had my first one yesterday, was laid in bed and i noticed my heart rate was high, i checked it and it was 90 while i was laid down, it then jumped to 100 then to over 150, i freaked out literally nearly passed out and had extremely low blood pressure. Today i woke up fine but my issues started again earlier with palpitations and chest pain. I have suffered for years with anxiety and depression but this scares me

Everything you say hits pretty close to home. It's physical for me and I'm trying every day to change. My problem is PTSD from bullying years ago and i still drag it with me, but it's slowly getting better.

chris dimic Good to heat it’s getting better. Chris. Remember, Neuroscience has proven that every time we revisit an old memory it changes slightly. So if you go back and re-frame those memories, take something good from it (view it from a new angle) you have a good opportunity to change the feelings in your body whenever you remember that time from the past. I use similar techniques with my PTSD clients and go deeper with this but a good place to start.

Thanks! I think it's just personally figuring out what triggers it and staying away from stimulants (coffee, cigarettes, alcohol - all the good stuff lol). Going to the gym and becoming stronger physically definitely helped me since lots of my anxiety stems from being too weak to stand up to people stronger than me, which destroyed my confidence. Triggers would be getting into a verbal confrontation with someone (work, family etc)and having a severe panic attack, which made me sit at home and avoid people all together, hurting personal relationships and my mental health in return. For the longest time I thought i was just depressed, but that wasn't the case, since I'm a pretty positive person by default. It's funny when you remember the exact moment of getting PTSD (being punched in the face really hard and then verbally assaulted for what seemed were hours). My advice for people with anxiety from PTSD is: Get strong physically (and mentally in return), get rid of negative people in your life, get a hobby (music, painting etc) and find something to focus on. Cheers!

When I drink alcohol, the following day I can feel very anxious. Then when I drink coffee in the morning my health anxiety can go through the roof. My doctor says it's not the alcohol or caffeine perse. More people experience this? Your video indeed points out things that I also experience and what most people experience. It can be a 'hell' sometimes. Going to watch more of your videos and I hope it'll change my mindset. Thanks!

I had the lump in the throat. I am in tears right now as I am listening to you as I am going thru this at this moment. I thought for along time I could get rid of it. The last time I felt like this was back in 2010 and I said I was not going to have this is ever again and now in 2020 it is back. I have to say after 2010, I lost my mom and my brother so that was hard for me. I am glad I found your channel.
