This video is a simple progression from 3k 5k 8k then 12k naniwa to finish . Once your bevel is set the rest is pretty straight forward. A good stropping linen leather you should be good to shave .
Synthetic hones are consistent and the easiest to learn with and the 12k Naniwa leaves a nice comfortable edge .
It's all you would ever need for your razors .

The 2k Nan/pro is a good bevel setter as well.

Hi Gary, Do you add anything to the strop? What do you recommend to lap the stones?

I’m gonna try just going straight to the strop after my 12k and skip the CromeOx. But at first I was doing like 30 laps on the CromeOx, last time I was experimenting with only doing 8 laps.

Hi Gary, these stones look nice. Is there any difference with Naniwa Super stones?
@garyhaywood6013

The naniwa pro are more expensive but don't clog as quick as super stones so I use the 3k pro for heavy work then Naniwas superstone . Get the 20mm thick if you going to get some
@garyhaywood6013

I didn't want to confuse you but yes my 5k 8k and 12k are the thicker version naniwa and there called Gouken kagayaki . The 3k is naniwa pro. They say the Gouken are the newer superstone and I've had both and I do think the Gouken seem slightly better but some say there the same but if I was you get the Gouken kagayaki naniwa in 20mm

Not really just normal pressure, enough to keep the razor flat on the hone .

@@garyhaywood6013 thanks, it does look like you are using light pressure even when you say you are applying more pressure is that the case too?
@garyhaywood6013
@garyhaywood6013 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrStrom82 at the beginning on the 3k and 5k a little more pressure than normal. So long as you finish lightly on the final hone you will be ok.

Hello! I wanted to ask about the specific stones. I was thinking of buying from the numbers you used in your video, 3K, 5K, 8K, 12K. For setting up the bevel, does 3 and 5K help or would 2 and 5K be a better choice? Thanks in advance.
@garyhaywood6013
@garyhaywood6013 Жыл бұрын
If I was you I would buy the 3k naniwa professional. Reason being it doesn't clog up with swarf and it cuts plenty fast enough fir bevel setting . Then get the 5k 8k 12k naniwa Gouken kagayaki in the 20mm thick . There the new version of Naniwas superstones

@@garyhaywood6013 Hello Gary. I'm thinking a lot about whether the perfect progression is 1k 3k 5k and 10 pro. I think the 10 pro leaves a better mirror polish than the 12k and without dulling the steel stone. The edge was wanted even smoother than finishing in 12k Super Stone. Thank you

Hello Garry, I have basically the same stones, and when I hone my boker celebrated, the naniwas get all dirty and smudgy, with thick pores showing in the 12k. I do not tape the blade. What do I do wrong?
@garyhaywood6013
@garyhaywood6013 11 ай бұрын
That's the one thing you can get especially with out use of tape not that using no tape is incorrect because it's not . It's fine to not use tape . On the lower grits they do swarf up real quick . I've switched to the 3k naniwa pro and 5 k they really don't swarf up and any loading rubs of easy . I use the 10k Suhiro. Kousek also very good stone I think it's better than 12k naniwa . You just have to lap your stones regularly

@@garyhaywood6013 Thanks for the info, Gary. Maybe I'm overdoing it with the pressure. Just got them and I think I will stick with them for some years. Maybe my technique is wrong, maybe its because I haven't lapped them yet. First time honer and something goes wrong from the get go. I saw a bunch of videos with Naniwa SS, and the never got loaded that quick. Thank heaven for guys like you that make such excellent videos. Learning a lot. I have noticed that you almost newer put the heel on the stones. I did that and that is where the most swarfing happened. The celebrated does not have such a heavy shoulder, so I thought, it does not matter, if I hone the full edge, heel included. Maybe I did a big mistake in that.

@@timothyberg7720 I'd highly recommend 400 atoma diamond plate for lapping . I do touch down on the heal . 8k and 12k you shouldn't need lots of work especially 12 k . They are a good set of hones they show serve you well

@@garyhaywood6013 Hey Gary, thanks for the tip. I just found an Atoma for under 70 Euros. I thought the 400 was the price. But that is quiet affordable. I just honed the knife the first time with tape on the back, and there is much less build up than without the tape, you were right. I bought the naniwas, because of video by a guy named Lynn Abrams. But now I see there are lots of videos out there, where people are bashing naniwa ss for soaking up water and cracking. Lets see how long they will serve me well...

@@timothyberg7720 your Naniwas what model are they ? Knifes are softer you will get swarf build up . The naniwa you have won't crack some say they warp I had the 20mm version still do they don't crack it's the naniwa pro that had crazing problems mine haven't but I dry they fully and air them on there side
