Wow. I was fascinated by all these Japanese railroad crossing videos when I was a kid. How each crossing had its own bell sound. And now this video is 15 years old today!

So, I was trying to figure out what 汽車 meant, since I knew densha, but not the other. Technically, according to Nihongodict, it means "steam train" (kisha), but effectively means non-electric locomotive. The radical on the left side of 汽 means water. Interesting!

I was about to joke and say "BECAUSE TWO TRAINS" but it looks like it's for real! It's quite clever since some people cross the railway after the train is gone even if the signal is still red. With this system everybody knows that two trains are coming.

Thank you, 80sGuy. 989, one is a metal bell, the other simply an electonic bell, though it does not sound much like a bell. Both are electric trains.

Why two signals, one for each track? One signal is enough for both. Are those electric sensors aimed at each other across the road? Are they to detect an object on the road? Why? One could be killed just as easily killed by a one car train. But no need for multiple signals. One set is enough. What do they do at four or more track grade crossings? 8 seconds before gates lower. 49 seconds before 1st train. 1:17 before 2nd train arrives.

"What do the lighted signs read? Close track/far track?" They say "train" and "electric train". Don't ask me how that info could be useful. The double lights are a really good idea. Eliminates the problem of someone starting across after the first train and getting hit by the second train.
