My Tacx Flux which was delivered yesterday and I wasted no time getting it up and running. Overall, if this is your first smart trainer, you will not be disappointed as it is good for the money. But… I was/am a bit disappointed. The Flux didn’t feel much different to my old Bkool Pro (on wheel) smart trainer (cost £350 last year) that I had for 11 months/1100+ miles. I was expecting a more realistic road feel from a direct drive trainer compared to an ‘on wheel’ trainer. I wasn’t blown away by anything it did… apart from the lack of noise! This trainer is QUIET! When I used my Bkool Pro, I never thought ‘this is a bit loud’. The Bkool ‘noise’ never bothered me and my cooling fan was noisier just on setting 1! The Flux is noticeably quieter. I reckon you could use this in the room next to where a small child is sleeping with no problems, as long as you don’t clunk the gears or breathe REALLY heavy! It doesn’t seem to vibrate much either although my Flux was on a concrete, MDF boarded, carpeted floor in my garage. I am a bit upset that this is the only thing that I thought was better with the Flux. It’s only since reading all the blogs about trainers, that the ‘noise’ they make is a big selling point. The Neo much be REALLY quiet! It was easy to assemble but I did notice a large gap between the cases where they meet in one place. It shouldn’t have left the factory looking like that so the quality control was a bit lacking in the rush to get it out, I think. I then tried for about 10 mins to get the Flux connected to my Bkool app, but gave up and I decided to use Zwift instead (for the first time ever). The Flux and Zwift connected straight away. I calibrated the Flux with the Tacx Utility App and then I set off on a Zwift mountain ride that I just picked at random. It didn’t seem to working properly with the changes in gradient and didn’t seem real at all so I quit Zwift as I needed a true gradient to get a feel of how the Flux felt. I then updated the Flux firmware using the Tacx Utility app (and it did need an update) and now it did connect to the Bkool app :-) Right… now on familiar ground, I selected my first ever ‘virtual’ route I rode November ’15 on my Bkool Pro smart trainer, La Vuelta 2014 E11 (17 miles), so I could compare the two trainers a bit better. www.strava.com/activities/796124683 The ride felt easier at first with the Flux and when the climbs started the extra resistance kicked in. The steepest climb was around 11% and it did feel like 11%, unlike the gradients on Zwift earlier. My biggest surprise was on the downhill after the last, highest peak. It isn’t a really steep descent and averages out around -4%. It flattens off and then rises slightly (1.5% to 5%) in places but a good downhill where you can keep your momentum if at speed. I tried to carry speed all the way down but the Flux didn’t seem to want to help. It was if I was going downhill into a headwind (you know what I mean). It did disappoint me. My old Bkool Pro (on wheel smart trainer) didn’t feel as quite as good going up the climbs but it did feel a lot better going down. It is the first time the Flux has been run and might loosen up with more miles. I’m going give Zwift another try this morning to see how the Flux feels on that.

Thanks for posting this up mate. RE: Zwift control. Sounds like something else had a BLE connection to the trainer and it wasn't responding to the gradient changes because of that? Just a guess. The gradient changes should be very apparent under normal conditions on Zwift. RE: Downhills. Hmm. It's all about w/kg (or more basically the power) you produce. So when there's less resistance on a downhill it's harder to produce force required to create more power. That's a given... but... Due to how the FLUX estimates power based on flywheel speed, and I believe it factors in 'gradient', it is very difficult to keep the watts high downhill. I'm not sure if this is purely by design.... I've flagged it with Tacx for review. Wahoo addressed this with a firmware update a while ago in regard to power reporting under particular accelerations. Let's see what Tacx can do with the Flux.
@2wheelsonline
@2wheelsonline 7 жыл бұрын
Re:Zwift... I wasn't using BLE (Bluetooth)... was Ant+. I've been thinking... I did still have the Bkool app running whilst using Zwift, even though it wasn't connecting to the Flux. But the Bkool app WAS recognising the Tacx power meter(?) and Tacx Cadence/speed sensors... it just wasn't seeing the Tacx Ant+ trainer itself until I updated the firmware AFTER closing Zwift. I will check it again first thing tomorrow. Re: Downhills... To be honest, I'm not as fit as I was this time last year and I wasn't giving it the watts you reckon are required when I was going downhill. But I wasn't kicking out loadsa watts when using the Bkool on the same descent last year. I might try the same route again tomorrow.

I have tacx neo. Things to make sure of is to make sure you're using the right size lock ring as several in kit. The instructions aren't great. They say you need a campy lock ring tool but you don't. Any doubt get shop to do it for you. Neo is also great trainer. Only annoying and lame thing is no power switch on the unit. you have to turn of at wall socket. Considering how much a switch is this is poor. Well built but the is lateral flex on it especially when hoofing it. Other good thing would be adjustable feet so your frame is always vertical

If I can ask some advice: 1. I have a Tacx Bushido. It may break soon. All I want to do is spin on a Turbo using the gears as resistance. I don't need a monitor system. 2. I want a turbo which is compact to fold up like the Bushido. The Flux is huge. I have limited space. 3. I don't want to pay a monthly fee to use an app. My Garmin watch is fine. 4. I am a complete novice and only use the Turbo twice a week in the winter max. Which turbo do u buy?. My Bushido is perfect. I wish they would make more . Thanks

be interesting to see your review, I spend a few hrs on one over the weekend at zwift con uk . I thought it felt smooth, very quiet but it did lack the feed back on resistance change. I felt it was ok on the flat giving a solid 230/280 watt resistance but the transition to the hills wasn't best. Would give you 350/400 constant climbing but snap in a leg 700/800w effort, the unit didn't give you the watts on screen or let you drive it upto that. We was running it from Iso yesterday. thought it was my legs but jump on the elite or neo & that climbing punch was OK on them. Very nice unit, thou hopefully just a software/ iso niggle. Because plenty of people there was keen to buy one. Tony

Hey Shane great video as always. I'm interested how these direct drive trainers cope with slightly out 'of level' floors? I know that the Wahoo Kickr has screwed feet but the Neo and Flux don't seem to have any adjustment. Can you see it see it as a problem with a thin piece of wood under the low side of the feet to level things up? I just hate feeling that I'm not perfectly upright lol.
@gplama
@gplama 7 жыл бұрын
That's one downside of both the Neo and Flux, no feet adjustment. I'm sure it'd be fine with a few mm of "creative flooring" under either side if your floor isn't level.

Having just read Ray's review of the Flux, I have a question for you regarding loudness of the Flux: How much sound gets out of your apartment in Sydney? Is it noticeable (e.g., for neighbors)? I plan on using it in a similar setup (small room in apartment building) and as Ray lives in a cave, he's not really the one to ask. ;)

The lag in zwift you notice may be averaging. Zwift didn't have this until about a year ago, now you can choose between 0 or 3 seconds averaging (really helps with some power meters).
@gplama
@gplama 7 жыл бұрын
Update on this: That's not the case for the issue. I've looked very closely at the raw data, removing Zwift from the picture entirely. It is the ANT+ power signal from the Flux itself. There was a 10 second peak power lag with the original production version firmware. This has been reduced to around 5 seconds with the beta firmware (soon to be public).

Shane, mate.....I just pulled the pin on a pair of Assioma's power pedals and I have Kickr Snap on, planning to use the pedals as primary source of power, however I have heard the direct drive smart trainers are much better. Out of the Elite Direto and The Flux, Wahoo Core, which one would you suggest ? And should I always use the power pedals ? Cheers and great coverage on TDU2019.
@gplama
@gplama 5 жыл бұрын
There are less variables that impact power drift/inconsistencies on direct drive trainers. No tyre pressure issues, no roller tension to worry about, no tyre/roller surface, and less/no heat generated by the bike interface (although all resistance units get HOT). The Core is a good buy in that mid-range. It's entirely your call what to go with. Test ride each if you can. As for using the pedals as a power source.... again, your call. A lot of trainers operate better in ERG mode when using their own power as the source.

Hi, what happens with the resistance if you do not attach a power cord (electricity) to it. Why would I ask this (silly?) question? Can you use the Flux as a warming up tool next to your car, minutes before a race? Or do you need a electricity. I read on the Taxc website, that when you do not connect the Flux, it simulates a flat road. It does not state if it is with or without electricity. Kind regards
@gplama
@gplama 6 жыл бұрын
It'll provide some resistance when not powered. I wouldn't recommend taking a smart trainer, and not a Flux that doesn't easily fold up, to a bike race for a warm up. They're expensive units (so could be a target if left in your car), and they're full of electronics that isn't designed to get wet (rain, etc)

Hi Shane I bought a Tacx Flux last year. I’m still struggling with regard to smooth gear changing. The bike is a Bianchi Aria and gear changes as smooth as butter on the road. When I clip on to the Flux I find it very clunky when changing gear and can’t seem to get it sorted. I’ve been back to Tacx several times they have been helpful, but haven’t been helpful enough to solve the problem. They did suggest adjusting the gearing but that defeats the object of swapping quickly from indoors to outdoors. Can you give me any advise, please? Did you need any adjustment when you first used the Flux? Ive only been riding for a year after retiring from running and I’ve ridden the Flux for 6 months merrily clunking away, wondering if I’m damaging the gearing. Any help you can give would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you. .

Good stuff, as usual... You mention trying to run a spin down in the middle of your ride??? Can you do that? I have a Kickr, and Wahoo told me I should run a spindown every time I ride. So it's warm up for 10 min or so, end my Zwift session, do my spin down, then restart my Zwift. This is quite a pain, so I haven't been doing that. I did some testing, and it seems like the spindown results are pretty similar for my set up, day to day. I don't really think I need to do it every time. BUT, if there is some way to do this without having to go out of Zwift???? Am I missing something???
@gplama
@gplama 7 жыл бұрын
The Kickr (direct drive) only needs a spindown when it has been moved.... or every few weeks 'just to be sure'. I'm not sure on the spindown timing requirements of the SNAP, I don't own one.. yet. You don't have to end a Zwift session to do a spindown. Just unpair the Kicker, close the pairing screen, then do the spindown... then go back and pair it up. Much quicker than having to restart.

There's no easy answer there. They're all technical and they're all at difference price points. Best option is to visit your local bike shop(s) and find one that knows about Zwift set ups so they can get you rolling.

That's up to the manufacturers to report what their units are capable of. As for direct comparisons - there's a billion combinations here, best I can do is give my experience of each (as I do in my videos). Guys, one short question. Looking for a second smart trainer, right now I am using the Wahoo Kickr (old version without LED´s). What would you suggest? The new Kickr, or the Flux or maybe the Elite Drivo?? Regards from Germany
@gplama
@gplama 7 жыл бұрын
The best value for money at the moment is a 2nd hand Kickr v1, if it's in good condition. I'd put a Flux on a wait and see list for now until more people have theirs and have posted feedback on their experiences. The Drivo is a good unit although in a different price bracket compared to the Flux and Kickr16 (depending on your local market).

Shane what do the 10% max inclination mean when doing the epic climb with 13-15% inclination? Doesn't the flux increase the resistent any more after 10%?
@gplama
@gplama 7 жыл бұрын
It seems to top out at 10% 'feeling'... so it doesn't get into a true 'slog' mode that we're familiar with on a simulated 15% grade. I still don't know exactly how they come up with the virtual slope estimates and what they mean. It's different for everyone based on weight... I'll look into this.
@standandeliver8376
@standandeliver8376 5 жыл бұрын
@@gplama Good question. Presumably then, if you race against someone else of a similar fitness level up a 15% simulated hill and the other person is on a Neo (for example) then you will go faster because the resistance won't increase more than 10%. So there could be issues when virtual riding with others.
@gplama
@gplama 5 жыл бұрын
No. Not in Zwift anyhow. In-game speed is based w/kg, so your effort, not flywheel speed. You could argue it's easier to produce higher power on steeper gradients... but that's still creating power differences to go faster/slower, so doesn't apply.

They are two very different units mechanically and price wise. It depends what you're after. The Neo still wins in the silence area, and it is very accurate when it comes to power numbers. The Flux on the other hand does make a noise.... though very hard to quantify in any environment vs what everyone else has. "Less than a Kickr" is one way to describe it I guess. :)

Sure. I'm not sure a 32 tooth is required on an indoor trainer. A 28 is more than enough, and you can change the settings in software if not (Zwift has a slider for this in the settings).

Now, I am a little bit confused again after words from there and there. For everyone here to be aware of, what's your advice as a good trainer, this FLUX one or the already known Genius smart ? I know the Neo is the top of the line, but it is so heavy/costy for shipping to my overseas country. TACX has replied to my concern : " what would you like to know. The biggest difference is that the Genius is not a direct drive and the Genius is stronger than the FLUX and can simulate downhill " ... " the genius Smart and the NEO Smart can, but the FLUX does not " about the downhill thing.

Will be interesting to see exactly what price it ends up available at. At $999 it's still going to be nearly double a Vortex. The main loser will probably be the Wahoo Snap, I think it would be an easy up-sell for most people to go to direct drive for $50-$100 more when you're already spending $900. I mean just the tyre savings counts for a fair bit if you use it for a few years.
