After much deliberation, I grabbed a Neo 1 for about 35% off retail - a great deal indeed. Found an online deal which a local shop matched. Thanks Shane this review certainly helped with Neo 1 vs 2 feel and current features. What also helped, was the fact that I purchased 2 newly redesigned 2018 Wahoo Kickrs which both had significant problems. The only reason I mention this, is to illustrate the risk in sometimes buying latest - greatest. I really liked how quiet the new Wahoo was, and the heavier flywheel (vs 2017) had a good feeling. Sadly, they didn't hold up more than 2 weeks before they were returned.

Great vid - brilliant explanations of the benefits of the Neo. Whilst balanced your and DCR reviews made me go for the Neo 1 in the UK for £850 on BF. Love it. So much better than the Vortex for feel and in Erg it is simply awesome. Will get the benefits out of my Trainer Road sub so much more now. Thanks and keep up the fantastic vids.

Great review, given all your reviews on the 1st and 2nd gen i have opted for a Neo 2 over the Wahoo. I have thought against the world of indoor training for four years, but now i realised i can get some more focused training and in a safer environment through the dodgy winter months. I have built my pain cave based on your recommendations in videos so i will let you know how i fair. Looking forward to seeing data on how efficient my pedal stroke is on Q rings and conventional. I think, this is currently the very best hometrainer out there! I had the Kickr18 - but Neo2 is honestly one level up. Do I miss climb? A little - that is a cool thing from Wahoo. Why is Neo2 better than all the others? 1. the comfort (sideways "rocker-plate" build-in) is really great. 3h+ in the saddle without any issues (try that on a solid turbo). 2. the sound level - it's so quite. 3. Ride-feel smoothnes - it's really really good.

Great review Shane👍 After issues with the four KICKR 18 I tried purchased Neo 1 at a discount. Discounts aren't as good in Australia as overseas but a discount is a discount. One thing I didn't want to do is have problems with a new model again so went with a proven model this time. Was tempted though. Really happy with the Neo it's everything I hoped for. I may if further updates introduce some worthwhile features on the Neo 2 update one day but for the time being happy.

Got mine last week but unfortunately has a blinking red light out of box and cadence not working. I have always wondered why do they not have an option to wire the unit in, I see your doing the same as me with the ANT+ antenna leaving it right next to the unit, if you run a USB cable that close to the unit why not just plug in and avoid the ANT drop outs?
@gplama
@gplama 5 жыл бұрын
These units are still focusing on the single home user who doesn't have any ANT+ / Bluetooth / wifi signal issues. They went wireless because it's so much neater.. and there's no physical interface to break. It'd be like Apple putting a phone jack into their phones... I really don't see it happening except for edge cases (commercial environments/spin studios). I understand why people are asking, wireless dropouts are a pain. I just don't see any of the big trainer companies taking what would be seen as a backwards step with connectivity.

Shane, having just returned by Kickr2018 (belt tension/pulley wear under warranty) and reverted to my Neo1 I was wondering if you're aware of a reason for Tacx using a chock under the front wheel. The design would seem to easily allow for a lower overall profile and no chock; which would seem to be a cheaper and easier to setup design.

No insights into the design decisions. Maybe they needed the extra height for clearance for long cage rear mech and keeping the unit wide enough to be stable.

Hi Shane, I have a question for you (and anyone else, who would like to chime in): are direct drive trainers susceptible to temperature drift? I know a lot of the drift in wheel on trainers, is most likely due to the change in tire pressure, when it gets warmed up, but are there other things in play? I train in a cold shed and noticed that my Tacx Vortex had severe temperature drift, like you also mentioned in your review of it. Mine was much worse though, probably due to the cold starting temperature. I had an ftp test give me a result of 316 when other rides indicated it was actually around 250!

On the front non-driveside lock mechanism, the plastic seems to not extend over it (with the nice little hole to see the color) like the other three and instead the whole red and blue mechanism is exposed. Any idea if that is normal? Doesn't look like it broke off or anything

Hey Shane, hope your keeping safe and well. I currently have Elite Drivo 1 that is maxing about 650w when in a sprint at the end of a race. Apparently this is a common fault when paired to Bluetooth so I’m considering a new one. I was wondering if you had your choice of trainers after all your years of experience what would be your go to trainer. Cost no object and I’m not bothered about the climb ad on of the Kickr. Just trainers no full bike trainers. Your general opinion would be greatly appreciated.
@gplama
@gplama 3 жыл бұрын
Something's up with that if it's topping out at 650. For the hypothetical cost-is-no-object scenario: Anything at the top of the line will work well. Kickr2020, CORE, NEO2T, DiretoXR, H3. There really isn't much between them all these days when it comes to pushing down on the pedals.

In the US/Canada, the price of the Neo 1 is only $120 less... not worth not buying the 2 at that difference. Fluterra I think you’re right, bit for now I don’t think in my case it is worth the extra money. When those extra’s become available, I van always decide to upgrade (in a couple of years). Make sure your weight/height is entered into whatever program you're using (this has an impact on the ride feel of the Neo). There's also a difference with the Neo vs Kickr in terms of the flywheel speed/inertia/momentum. People who have tried both will typically report the Neo being harder at FTP or above to hold watts. I put this down to the unit design / function. The Neo is super responsive without much physical weight in the flywheel... where as the Kickr has that 14/16lbs flywheel behind it always kicking over. This is a whole topic in itself....

The Neo 1/2 flaws are easy to spot when you look at what they fixed with the 2T - Native thru-axle support (no adapter required) and a more powerful resistance unit to stop that virtual tyre slip issue. Entirely your call what to go with.

The Tacx Neo2 is really quiet and feels high quality. However, I do miss my Tacx Vortex and its ability to transfer almost all of my pedaling power to the wheel. I can really put down some serious wattage and fly on Zwift. The Neo 2, on the other hand, has the "tilt" capability that tilts the bike left and right while pedaling. Every "tilt" robs some of my pedaling power. My average wattage per ride is reduced by about 20% with the Neo 2. Even though the "tilt" capability simulates the real-world riding better, I wish there is a way to disable it.

Anyone experience slight fluctuations in ERG mode when trying to keep to certain watt? Eg doing 180w for 2 minutes in ERG, the watts tend to go up and down 5 to 10watts despite a steady cadence.
@gplama
@gplama 3 жыл бұрын
+-5/10W in ERG is typical. Humans are never smooth. If you're coming from a trainer that had power smoothing in ERG then and are now using something like a NEO over Bluetooth which will update the watts on screen in Zwift around 4 times a second, the jumps look like a problem. As long as you're not getting an on/off up/down feeling through the pedal stroke like on some trainers, it's normal. (Note: Zwift 3s power smoothing isn't enabled in ERG mode)

If you're expecting pedal analysis forget it! Isn't compatible with any devices and can only be seen in a very basic form on the Windows desktop App. If you have ANT+ sensors (ie HRM) you can't connect them to the trainer and then the trainer to other devices via bluetooth. ie bridging the connection. You can do this with Watt bikes 5 years old+. Just hope things improve as really don't want to buy £800 vector 3 pedals which apparently aren't waterproof ;-/

So I'm not sure if you are able to assist me with this one Shane... Do these smart trainers truly get tested when it comes to their max wattage output? I've had the Neo 1 for about six months now and enjoy my sprinting on Zwift, but the Neo 1 seems to slip at wattage's over 1300w. I have been in contact with Tacx and they have tried to assist me over a period of a few months with various potential solutions. They even sent me a brand new trainer just for the exact same problem to occur. Every time I go into a proper sprint, the trainer slips, regardless if the trainer is connected to the Tacx software or with Zwift. I have also tried sprinting with both a mountain bike and a road bike, which obviously have different gear ratios, just to have the same problem. Tacx requested a video of me sprinting and they have confirmed that there is clearly an issue and have also said it is not due to limited torque. I was concerned that it might be my bike or my sprinting style so I tried sprinting on a Watt bike as well as on the Wahoo Kickr (with both a mountain bike and road bike). I peaked at 1800 watts on both with no slippage at all. I enjoy the Tacx Neo but am obviously frustrated with this issue. Tacx have now informed me that they are looking for a solution to this problem, I am still waiting. So...a suggestion for a possible product test video...get some heavies and do some max wattage testing on these smart trainers that claim these massive wattage outputs?
@gplama
@gplama 5 жыл бұрын
I suspect they test max wattages with a dyno and a slow ramp up to max wattages. Adding max sprint tests would mean I'd have to get someone in... I'm no max wattage monster. I'd say that 1200W+ indoors is an edge case. One that the trainers should hold up to, sure. Testing this with real humans will cost me time and money, and broken trainers. I'll start requesting the companies who make these products be more transparent with how they test their units at these maximums.
@smartbig1
@smartbig1 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad I found the same problem with wattages above 1000 watts. Whenever I applied power past this wattage it would constantly slip. I went through the same process as you and unfortunatley there is no solution. I usually peak at 1600 watts but it is obvious that this machine cannot handle anything above 1000 watts let alone the advertised 2000 watts . I eventually sent the the unit back and exchanged it for a Kickr.

@smartbig1 5 жыл бұрын
@@bradkinsey3284 I have found the Kickr better to ride when it comes to accelerated efforts. For me this is very important but for most users it is not and that is why the Neo is an excellent machine. As far as accuracy goes I cannot really comment but Shane has done videos on this and in my experience it seems accurate enough. I am not worried about the 1 percent accuracy between the two. However, if you are experiencing tyre slip then how accurate is the Neo really when accelerating past 1000 watts.
