When the bottom of your tailbone pops out of place, it’s called a subluxation, and this can happen after you fall directly on your butt.🙃 If the tip of your tailbone subluxes to the left or right, it usually causes pain and discomfort sitting, whereas if it subluxes forward, it can partially block your rectum (making it hard for you to poop), and can interfere with a woman naturally giving birth. 😅
I’ve got a partner “massage” approach today, but it’s more of a trigger point pressure treatment that may also shift the joint if done correctly. This technique is advanced, and for an experienced manual therapist - it’s unlikely you’ll be able to do what I’m teaching you correctly. 📣
Anyway, here it goes ...
1. With the person on their stomach hook your middle finger down their sacrum and under until you can actually hook your finger on their tailbone and pull upward without your finger slipping.
2. Feel to the left and right of the tip. Often, the tenderness is on the opposite in which the tailbone is not pointing.
3. Apply steady upward pressure over the tender side for 1-2 minutes to release the painful trigger. If they’re lucky, and you’re lucky, and their tailbone was actually out of place, and if was out of place in the direction you guessed, you may feel it pop back in place.
A Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist is the most competent therapist for a tailbone that has subluxed forward, whereas a chiropractor is the most qualified to treat a tailbone that has subluxed left or right (I would recommend a Chiropractor from Logan and Palmer College - look it up). However, a chiropractor is the only practitioner I know who can adjust deep forward subluxated tailbone back into position (I’ve done a couple of these adjustments myself). The more you know! 👏
