There’s rumors about a sequel being made, and I’d be interested to see if her father is the main character in that one. While Kennie interpreted the hand as drugs-which definitely works- I more interpreted it as the role grief can play in life, and how mishandling of it (Mia being entirely alone with her father lying to her and nobody really caring about the fact that she lost her mom) can drive someone to the worst places. It also shows how suffering has become such a spectacle in the world, with bored teenagers recording and playing with people’s dead souls, as they wander helplessly in limbo, for entertainment. If there is a sequel, I’d assume the father scours the world for the hand, trying to find Mia or his wife, which ultimately may destroy him.

I really wish the horror genre was more respected in the film and award industry. It really pisses me off that actresses like Sophie Wilde, Mia Goth, Rebecca Hall, Lupita N’yongo, and Toni Collette are not recognized by the awards industry just because the films that they thrived in were horror films. But no matter what happens this awards season the Philippou brothers and the film’s cast should be very proud of their work in this heartbreaking horror movie.

Agreed! Actors in horror should be given more praise and Oscar appreciation as acting scared is super challenging because most of us haven't experienced such emotions before, unlike a drama film. I used to be able to hang but have become pretty sensitive in recent yrs. Maybe because I lost like 30 people in my life since like 2019. All this started with a friend being found unalived and taken to pieces on my birthday and the trauma rolled straight on through the panini press. I have gone to therapy? But yeah. I usually like happy family movies now and romantic comedies. I even cannot watch walking dead or fear the walking dead the last few yrs!!!

36:25 I love that Mia at least learned the truth about her “mom” right before she died. After her mom says “ we’ll have him forever” Mia realizes that her mom has been the malevolent spirit from her initial possession manipulating her all along just to then be pushed into traffic. Morbidly beautiful
@shayjustice3654

Right? I had really hoped that she caught that at the end. And I found it so interesting how they showed her "mom" throughout the movie. Because they are said to lose their power the longer that they're in them, it was so interesting to see her keep the mom form in the beginning, but the longer she stayed, the more she started to fall apart and become wet and bloated like her original form. And the water sounds you could hear whenever she was around. It was just a really smart decision.

One of my favorite theories is that her "mom" was actually that bloated/drowned woman the whole time. Because as the "mom" appears more, she looks worse and worse and when shes talking to Mia on the side of the road she looks wet and slimy just like that first woman. She also makes a comment that *they'll* have him forever, which sounds reaaaaaaaal suspicious.

@@kissit012 oh whoops thought you were saying the drowned lady brainwashed the mother ghost and I was like well I haven’t seen the film so maybe? Ok, that fits more with what I thought. I thought the drowned lady just took the form of her mother, and slowly lost her ability to look like the mom the longer she was in Mia. Question, was the mother ever even there? I thought maybe the first person who possessed Riley was the mom, but then a stronger spirit…took over? (The stronger spirit was the one that possessed Mia told Riley to run from). We know drowned lady and whatever possessed Riley both wanted Riley to die because they could then have him forever. But in the end, there’s no reason to think the mom was ever there at all. Mia was possessed by the drowned lady first, who while inside her might have been able to figure out exactly how to look and sound like Mia’s mother. She also stayed with Mia for longer than 90 seconds. So it’s possible that she told some other ghost what to do to convince Mia that her mother was inside Riley, thereby making her want to go over the time limit for Riley. Now Mia and Riley are both possessed and over the 90 second limit, and drowned lady can convince Mia to help kill him by acting as Mia’s mother. It’s possible that once they had Riley, the drowned lady might have told Mia to kill herself to join her mom or something. That way they’d get both Riley’s soul to feast on and Mia to join the lost souls. It’s convoluted honestly but I guess they’ve had a lot of time to work it out!

my theory about the ending is that Mia being in that limbo is a metaphor for when addicts become isolated because of their addiction. When all the loved ones of an addict have to "push" them out of their lives because they are a danger to themselves and others similar to how Jade did to Mia. She is left in this hopeless limbo where her only place of solice and connection comes from her vice, being the hand. The only place where she is no longer a lost confused spirit is the thing that brought her there

I see this movie as more of a mental health allegory, cus while the drug allegory is evident it can also speak to how when you let your mental health deplete so much to a degree you start listening to the negative thoughts, and it’s sad bc when you’re so consumed by guilt and grief, you start doing things you normally wouldn’t to cope, sometimes it’s innocuous to borderline unhealthy and sometimes it’s dangerous to the point of self destruction, which makes the ending so sad, she was already grieving bc of her mom and now this kid who she perceives literally as a brother’s life is on the line and she feels guilt, and she was trying so hard to find a reprieve with this hand, the scene where the spirit of Mia’s mom was telling Mia her dad isn’t real and he’s dangerous, the whole time I was like “GIRL DONT LISTEN THOSE DEMONS THEY LYING, FIGHT THE DEMONS DONT LISTEN” it really be like that irl lol

To be fair Mia stole the hand, and even though Hayley and Joss are mad with her for it, they never even asked it back. Once Mia says wants to try the thing again with Riley they just go and after that, Mia just leaves the hand at house. So whoever grabbed it and passed it around stole it from her house and somehow just knew the rules of how to use it.

Did you notice how the spirit of Mia's mom seemed to resemble the second spirit Mia spoke to, gradually becoming more like it as the movie progressed? Remember when Mia held onto the hand for a bit more than 90 seconds? That prolonged connection caused the spirit to linger and desire her. So it took on the appearance of her mom to do so. N when going back to what the dead guy's brother mentioned about "the spirits getting weaker over time," it all ties into like the shifting appearance of Mia's mom and the sound of water everytime she appeared The detail of this movie is just 😘👌🏾👌🏾

I thought this movie had a very realistic depiction of teenagers as well. I think it being made by people who are more in tune with that age demographic really helped. It never felt demeaning or insincere, it took the time to flesh out each character to make them believable which I really think made the film that much more visceral. Great vid Kennie!!! 🩷

That was one of the things I really liked about it as well. It's so rare to see teens actually acting like real teens in movies/shows like this. I'm only 21, and I definitely recall people around me acting exactly like Mia or even Joss when I was in high school. Aside from the way they talk, it's something very accurate about the way they interact with each other that differs from how you would as an adult. I can't put my finger on it, but it's like everyone is overly familiar with each other and in each other's personal space but real, genuine connections are lacking.

The social environment in this film was the true horror for me 😅 i cant wait for the sequel! Something that i found intereting about Mia's isolation from her friend group were these two instances: 1. Jade’s mom is quick to accuse only Mia of experimenting with drugs, even though its likely that Jade and Daniel tried them too. Also, how shady is it that Jade was out here telling her mom that Mia smoked weed? What was SHE doing when that happened? Was she trying to make herself appear more innocent in comparison, even though she's the one who drags Mia to these parties and tells her to "let loose"? 2. During the foot sucking incident, Mia and Daniel both try to explain to Jade that what they did wasn't sexual but Jade was quick to shut Daniel up if it meant defending Mia's character. Also, how in the world did none of Mia's friends and supposed "adopted family" come to support her during her mom's actual funeral day? Even Jade couldn't get off her phone for more than a minute to give ger friend a hug.

True. I haven't seen the movie so I don't know EXACTLY how it is portrayed but at least from what I can tell in this review they're making it a very clear drug reference- peering into the other side makes you TRIP BALLS apparently, and to a bunch of disaffected lost kids it must feel tremendous... even if one small part of me still goes "I mean I get that it feels good but those are THE RESTLESS DEAD THEY WANT YOUR SOULS IDIOTS". But kids trying something destructive that still feels good is someting I can believe more than kids trying a seance that IMMEDIATELY leads to all of them getting scratched up and decapitated by murder ghosts, with plenty of witnesses and descriptions warning them well in advance that the seance WILL lead to murder ghosts.

Honestly think this movie was the best horror movie of the year. Mia's mom was so interesting to me because her appearance seemed to shift everytime we see her. She looked less like herself and looked drenched so my theory is that the spirits know the vulnerable points and use it against the person they're inhabiting. So maybe it wasn't Mia's actual mother, I feel like it was the second spirit lady Mia let in for too long. Love your videos, Kennie!

I couldn't place why I begrudgingly felt for Mia as the movie continued to spiral. Likening the hand and it's effects to a drug makes more sense. It makes Mias' plight more harrowing and a little less frustrating for me to accept lol. As someone who asks all of the questions. Healthy skepticism saves lives. lol. I was reeling at her behavior after Riley was hospitalized. I could not get over how she's not even going to doubt that this spirit could not be her mother? Not going to doubt that there could be malevolence at play, runnin' a scam if you will? Like...not at all, especially after she's been told more than once* that the end goal is for the spirits to take people's bodies. She still had zero questions when "mom" asked her to do exactly that. She was in there full Bird Boxin'. "I will not see" lol. But the spirits, like abusers, know exactly who to target and how to do it. It may have been her real mom when Riley tried but after that, they knew they stuck gold and took over. The combination of her desperation and loneliness at the mercy of these spirits was like watching an uncomfortable confession of a former hard drug user or alcoholic. But the whole time I still wanted to repeatedly tap on her head "You don't listen!!!"

i also feel like a theme this movie was trying to explore was grief. the reason why mia gets so attached to the hand is because it allowed her to speak to her mum. when grieving most people who dont seek out therapy to cope with their loss will look for mediums to always connect with the person they lost. grief led a lot of her decisions. the first time she volunteered to play with the hand she wanted to fit in with everyone and even after what happened to riley, she still used any excuse to use the hand cause it connected her to her mum

I think that the spirit of her mom was never her mom and it's either the spirit of the hand (who can take on the form of dead people like her mom and Duckett's father in the beginning) or just some other malevolent spirit who has tasked themself with trying to trap more spirits with them. I think they took a liking to Riley when Mia first used the hand and that's when they decided to target him using Mia as she could be manipulated due to her loss and how she was close to him. They knew to call her Mi because - as someone in the movie speculated - the spirits can sort of learn everything about you from being in your head and so the spirit got the info from the first one that inhabited Mia. I think that's why the spirit was saying run as they all know what the main spirit tries to do and as previous victims want to somewhat help (also why the little girl showed Mia where Riley was in hopes she could help him maybe). Idk would love to hear other people critique this it's not fully thought out.

I never caught at the end that there was a PUSH into traffic - I thought it had been a voluntary jump and that there was some sort of vindication for her in making that choice rather than victimising someone else (which is still messed up). Great movie. My one small gripe is how easily Mia was persuaded to kill Riley. The guy explicitly told her that the spirits leave on their own, AND she heard earlier that the spirits own you if you die while being possessed. Shouldn't it then give her greater pause when her "mother" is like "no no I promise Riley's suuuuuuper messed up and the only possible solution is pushing his ass onto the freeway, pinkie swear :)"? I think that could've been easily fixed if they just showed Mia losing her mind in more detail, to make it plausible that she'd fall for the fake mom's lies. Other than that, it's a truly impressive debut film.

I feel like what makes most supernatural horror movies so disengaging and boring (jumps scares and that’s all which gets old fast) is that most wind up using vaguely Christian fears to drive their story which is something a lot of people, even Christians, don’t fear. But here what’s working is partly the grief, partly the fear of being alone and rejected, and the. The fear of death and the concept of death something nearly everyone struggles with. I also find the best horror and ghost stories are also the saddest and most….mournful if you will cuz again that sense of helplessness in the face of death is a powerful thing that almost everyone kinda fears at some point Kudos on this film Ps I hate mobile KZfaq’s layout for getting to the comments section.
