Talking Feds with Harry Litman

8 күн бұрын

The week had a tsunami like intensity that left abundant wreckage in its wake, both in the political and legal landscapes; and a fantastic roundtable of Andrea Mitchell, Charlie Sykes, and Jacob Weisberg bears down on what went awry and the unavoidable question-unthinkable one week ago-whether Biden needs to step aside. We then turn to the momentous week in the Supreme Court, which advanced the uber-conservative agenda especially in administrative law before previewing the immunity decision.

TALKING FEDS PODCAST is a roundtable discussion that brings together prominent former government officials, journalists, and special guests for a dynamic and in-depth analysis of the most pressing questions in law and politics.

@jarrodf_ Why? Do you think people are going to forget that as a "one-off/bad night?" We forget Trump things because he said and done too much stuff. But we all remember Mitt Romneys "Binders full of woman." The idea that undecided/independents/ the 5 Nikki Haley voters are going to lose track of watching Biden who looked and acted like Diane Fienstien a week before she died is nutty. Unless you are just into the cult of personality, watching that would make you not trust that guy around a stove, much less the most stressful and most powerful single job on the planet. I am so fed up with how people jump to conclusions based on what they think they see. Earlier tonight I listened as Keith Olbermann suggested that what we saw was quite possibly just an old guy with a bad cold suffering the effects of ordinary cold medicine, which is not unusual for seniors, and certainly no cause for alarm. Everyone needs to calm down.

I am so fed up that peoples feelings get in the way of reality. Just like in 2016 when all polling indicated Bernie could beat trump and HRC couldn't. But noooo!!! The DNC just had to check the female president box and ignore reality. How did that work out? Bernie would've beaten trump and we wouldn't be in this position today. Just like Kamala isn't going to be able to beat trump if Biden steps aside. F box checking and put a ticket together that can beat trump

Maybe add the context that so far polling seems to show its made NO Difference to the numbers for Biden, but dropping the Orange Liar a point to a point and a half across a range of demos. So perhaps the usual "untouchable" effect that Trump gets the benefit of all the time has actually flipped a little, and the public have already priced on Biden's frailty and know they just dont want the alternative.

First, there hasn't yet been good polling done on the effect of the debate. It won't matter (much) what national polling says, only how the debate affects what undecided voters in the swing states think. Second, the whole idea behind this debate strategically from the Biden team was to put to rest concerns about his age to those very voters I just mentioned. It likely did the exact opposite.

I am as disappointed with this podcast as I was with the debate, but I will continue to tune in, as I will continue to ride with Biden. My disappointment is the harshness against Biden for one debate that was not a debate. A debate is not a refutal of lies, no one can debate lies. Debates are about issues, and Donald Trump told lies without putting forth one issue that could be debated, and that should be the story, the lies. The fact is Joe Biden is doing a phenomenal job in spite of his age, partly because he has surrounded himself with intellectuals who know what they are doing and he will continue to do that for the next four years, if he is able to win the election when there are narratives like those presented in this podcast to contend with. Even with cue cards, Biden is able to command respect from the internaltional community and leaders. If Biden is unable to carry out his four years, he has a very able and ready vice president to take over that no one is addressing. Trump will not be governing, his cabinet will, and would you prefer those to Joe's cabinet? The tongue lashing that you all gave to Joe should have been reserved for the Supreme Court and the criticism given against Joe should have been equally levied against Trump, we cannot give him a pass while crucifying Joe. My last point is that none of you have a viable plan, so to put Biden in the pasture because he is old is irresponsible when we have no other viable alternative at this point in the election. Stop it. Change the narrative. We continue to ride with Biden.

What I saw during the debate were Moderators who didn't know how to do their job. They never held Trump's feet to the fire and made him stick to the topic and answer the question. I saw Biden wrestle with opposing thoughts of which lie do i respond to first or do I respond to the question or do I try to respond to both and ultimately sometimes his responses were a befuddled mixture of trying to do both. Yes Biden struggled, but you could tell he wanted to call Trump out with each lie as it was said but couldn't because he was following the rules. People say the it isn't the job of the Moderators to fact check but it is their job to keep the person on task to answer the question asked and the rebuttal is the time for a response to what the other person just said not a free range speech time. Hell, man, the one option I would accept is Harris and she is already there: if the Democrats put in some clown and ditch the team, I will think that Putin got to them, and I would think it was another Potemkin president, and I would be out of there. 100% my response. I also factored the possible impact of Hunter's trial and conviction -- his only living child. I know he's tough, but all these factors put together with with having a cold, and a staff that wouldn't play to his strengths and filled him with talking points that boomeranged on them and on us! That said if the press, etc. have all been covering the decline and lying either covertly or overtly to the public, then the hiccup at the Thursday, June 28th debate, gave you all a chance to get out from behind the failure to disclose. Otherwise, as I commented Thursday night, it was a bad 90 minutes in a long career. The response has been anything but unanimous. Pundits, the NYT, and big media have one view, independent journalists (whom I trust more and more), and voters on FB Biden supporter pages as well as commenters on this very video have a totally different take. The debate happened Thursday. Since then Biden did a powerful speech at Carolina and has met with donors. We have had polls showing the effect hasn't been so bad and people discussing with calmer minds have explored the possibilities of how Biden could step down and what could happen next. For the first time I find myself listening to the guests and being reminded of headless chickens. This never happens on a Talking Feds podcast - maybe you'd have been better just cutting that bit. Yes, the debate was awful and disconcerting, but the fall out will take weeks to work out. In the meantime Joe needs to be doing a lot of media and showing the energy he had in Carolina, while we look at all our options. I'm not so concerned that he needs a prompter. I remember George W giving a stinker of a speech without one. Most politicians can't tie their shoelaces without one.

notice how none of the people trying to oust biden on these podcsts or in the media are genuinely putting together what happened. 1) the moderators didn't moderate. they just posed questions, which trump was free to answer, or not answer, any way he wanted. 2) the failure to moderate meant biden's answers became even more fragmented than usual. we know that adults who stuttered as children learned to manage the stutters with mental & rhetorical cues & by fragmenting answers to questions. we see biden's cues all the time. when he starts to stammer, he'll say something like, 'well look that's not the point,' or 'don't get me started.' we saw him having to over-use these in the debate because of the lack of moderation. 3) biden had a 'can you believe this guy?' face at the ready for when trump was ranting, allowing him - biden - to remain silent but showing incredulity to trump's response. the biden make-up / fillers / eye-brow-threading made the incredulity-face appear like the lost-face, compounded by biden over-using it

Although I was horrified by Biden’s performance, it’s not enough for me to change my vote. As enamored as I am with the THOUGHT of an open convention, considering the REALITY of same gives me pause. It would indeed be a free-for-all, and I’m not sure the party, or the eventual candidate, would emerge stronger as a result. (1) The timeline for the campaign would be shortened [ala Hubert Humphrey in ‘68], (2) If Kamala Harris is not accorded the ‘respect’ of a candidacy, a cornerstone of the party’s would be fractured, (3) those attending a convention are the party faithful, the same ones who vote in part primaries, in other words, the extremists would be over-represented versus the more moderate, centrist, less involved persons who represent the majority of voters (at least before Trump happened). We need to remember why the nation moved from conventions to primaries in the first place (television media being a big part as well, I believe). On the other hand, it might be a good thing to tinker a bit with the process in a way that would allow the party convention to play a significant role in not only constructing the party’s platform, but selecting the candidate as well. Ranked choice voting has its appeal. So to, a fresh face -and vision for the future- would be welcome. In fact, I dare say, that a big part of the frustration voters feel with their current [lack of] choice is that both alternatives are rather backward looking; Trump wants to renew his attack on Democracy and will spend most of every waking moment plotting revenge upon his opponents/persecutors dating to 2020 and beyond; Biden reassures that the status quo will remain ‘steady at the helm.’ I can only imagine the desperation young persons must feel watching the climate change before our eyes, housing market tied up in knots by monied interests, the growing, even accelerating, disparities between rich and poor. The American Dream is under a host of threats, our government, particularly Congress, but now even the Supreme Court, seems either unwilling, or unable to stem the tide, and at times seems to be opening the flood gates. But insulin is now $35 a dose. We’ve lost our way, in part because we’re more likely to ask [or demand] what our country can do for us; but also because our leaders have not asked us to do something for our country, they all seem bent on ‘delivering’ to their constituencies because they’re not asking themselves the same question [‘what can we do for our country?’] many of them. The Book of Proverbs said it well [in condemning leaders], “Without vision the people perish.” We’re dying for lack of vision. We’re closing our eyes to reality; our ‘head in the sand’ mentality will wind up biting us in the behind. Off my soapbox. Have a good day/week.
