I get knee injections with a timed released medication about every 3 months. My PA uses a numbing spray on the skin before the injection. I only have a little discomfort (not pain) as the medication goes in. That little discomfort is well worth the almost 3 months of no knee pain!

I had those combined (1) freeze, and (2) poke-mon on the right knee for double-digit-YEARS; was so blessed to receive an issue-free knee replacement about four-years ago. One of the students asked the professor, "This guy's got scars all over his body; instead of stapling him and leaving the traditional scar, may I suture instead?" Go for it. I cannot believe the small, un-noticable, hair-line scar. Job well done. I am able to walk 3-5 miles a day, without issue, and after surviving fourteen (14) left total hip procedures, I'm so happy to be walking pain-free!!! 👌

Had several before I had knee replacements. They don't hurt and really worth it for a short time period until you are grinding bone on bone. I would encourage anyone to get them. I've had both knees done twice and am getting my third set of injections in the morning. The pain of the injection is so insignificant it's hardly noticeable and is over in less than a second - literally! I find that the pain relieving effect lasts about 9 months or so and wears off gradually so I get a sort of 'gentle warning' that I need to book in for more injections. For anyone worried about the pain, don't worry about it. Don't look at the injection as it's going into your knee as this accentuates the perception of 'upcoming pain', makes your muscles tense and can make you flinch, thinking that you're about to experience something unpleasant. It's SO not worth giving any of your attention to, the pain is over as soon as you initially notice it.😊 (I've also had 3 rounds of steroid injections in both wrists for carpal tunnel syndrome. Same pain level as the knee injections (almost nothing!) and the painkilling effect lasts about 10 - 12 months after each injection)

had this done yesterday and I totally agree. The needle sensation is comparable to any vaccination or even less painful. I was really anxious before, so my tactic was to avoid looking at the needle at all costs and it worked. The other thing may be the unpleasant sensation of the fluid going in and "expanding" the joint, but at least you can think "oh yeah it's the goody soothing fluid!" I could walk home immediately after the procedure.

You bet it hurts 100%!!!!!!!!!!! I have bone on bone and no cartilage left. It's not the needle going in (just like the video) but when the medication (Kenalog) is pushed in. It brings tears to my eyes!!!!! I need both knees replaced but because I'm overweight, they won't do it so I'm stuck. I can't run or exercise due to the bones grinding together and that causes excessive pain. Before my hips were replaced I also had injections but they didn't hurt near like the knee.

I've had several cycles of Synvisc. I found one PA who was virtually painless, but one day when I went in for my shot the doctor accompanied the PA into the examining room. This should have been a red flag to me particularly when the doctor pointed to an area of my knee that instructed the PA where to put the shot. Oh my, it was so painful I couldn't believe it. I am willing to bet this was the first shot this PA administered. I stopped getting the shots since it no longer helped, but I'm terrified to have any surgery done because for five years, while a medical transcriptionist, my account was Infectious Disease and after typing about the infections people had after surgery and the pain they went through along with lifelong need for antibiotics or immobilization of the knee, I'll live with the pain.

I was given no freezing beforehand and my hyaluronic knee injections were the most excruciatingly painful since a dentist did a root canal on me without freezing in the 50s. I left the doctor's office in shock and two years later I am still traumatized. Needless to say I won't be doing that again and certainly won't be visiting that surgeon again, who didn't prepare me at all for what was to come. When I asked about an ultrasound guided injection prior to the procedure he said it wasn't necessary as my weight didn't warrant it and he could see the knee structure. He never offered nor mentioned freezing. He said afterwards that there was very little space between the bones which explained the pain as the product was being pushed in.

I had cortisone injections for years before my TKR. Starting out with once a year, both knees, which were very effective until last year and a half. At that time I had them every six months until they became not effective at all. I've had a total of maybe a dozen cortisone knee injections including a few gel. Sometimes they didn't hurt and sometimes they were painful. None produced blood. The needle is not painful ever, and all injections were given in the same general area as shown in the video, .but by different PAs I've come to the conclusion, in my experience the ones that were most effective were somewhat painful and slowly injected instead of the quick in and out method. Good luck to all!

My Dr. does the method with the knee straight. He even had students come in and do my injections a couple of times, that didn't hurt either. Without the injections I wouldn't be walking, and I don't want replacement if it's not absolutely mandatory, so every 4 months works for me!!

That’s Exactly what happened to me . My knees wouldn’t bend at all , I couldn’t walk & both legs violently swelled and spasmed . In and out of the ER because my knees were so swollen and burned like literal fire 🔥 To this day my knees have gotten much worse than they were and turn all kinds of colors when i walk too much , which I had to RE learn how to do after I got these cortisone injections . I made sure I researched and had a list of questions with me and was assured that the risk of having complications from cortisone injections was very rare . WELL …… I had a rare underlying illness called complex regional pain syndrome that I didn’t know About . I tore my meniscus and the cortisone was supposed to help that because the tear was only a millimeter but my entire leg was swollen, stuck straight, then began contracting in half backwards and spastic pit of control . I’m very thankful for the early diagnosis and will Never get another cortisone injection again .

I just had my knee injections, my fourth pair, yesterday at the VAMC. I get the synvisc one gel injections in both knees. My doc uses cold spray on my knees first, than she injects some lido-leaves the needle in my knee and unscrews the vile, screws the gel vile onto the needle in my knee, and injects the gel. My right knee always feels more pressure than my left which I feel basically nothing. My left knee is worse of the two knees. I go every six months for them. I have osteoarthritis and these gel injections are phenomenal!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Basically pain free for 5-5.5 months. They couldn’t do steroid injections because I’m only 43 and they will make the arthritis worse. Eventually I’ll need knee replacements, but I’m too young for them now, outside of some emergency I pray 🙏 never occurs. Anyways, if you have arthritis in your knees the gel injections are a must!! They don’t hurt at all and your arthritis-caused knee pain will be significantly reduced if not gone entirely. For the docs, use freeze spray immediately prior to insertion of the needle and your patients will love you!!! God bless~

I would love to see a video on Hyaluronic acid, or rooster comb, injections. I've been hearing a lot about this from friends who have screwed their knees from years of sports and who are trying to decide or waiting for knee replacement operations. Your take on this therapy would be interesting! Thanks for your great videos!

My Hubs had the Rooster Comb injection four years ago. Within 5 hours he was in extreme, unmanageable-at-home pain. We went to the ER, where they dosed him with Demerol and sent him home with Tramadol prescription, and told us to continue icing it through the weekend. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Of course I am not a doctor.

This is my second round of gel shots. Last year there was no pain when my surgeon did the injections. Yesterday my doctor was out and a younger doctor did the injection. While my surgeon injected above the kneecap this doctor went in the lateral side under the kneecap. The pain was excruciating and I almost fell getting off the table. Something definitely was wrong. As I type this 24 hrs later the pain has become manageable. I’m assuming he must have hit the fat pad. Thank you for the information because you’re the only place that gave me the proper information. Hopefully my surgeon that I see will be in next week and I will tell him of my experience before my second of the 3 shots.

I had an injection done on Monday, 1/17/2023. The shot hurt but not for long. I felt the fluid expanding the knee capsule they were talking about. I did have difficulty placing weight on my knee after the injection, this last for about an hour or two. I needed pain med’s for that day. My knee started feeling better my Wednesday.

Did knee Injections for 8 1/2 years. Different flavors of medications. Finally no good results, which I knew would be the case at a point in time. Did a follow up after last injection, told my orthopedic Dr, it was time. 2 weeks later, new knee, 14 weeks later new knee. By the way never had major pain with injections. Thank you for your information. I had the injection yesterday. It was the 1 shot not the once a week over a 3 week period. Please note that before the injection my pain level was already at 10 due to a Meniscus tear. I wasn’t nervous because I thought it would be as simple as having a cortisone shot. I was injected in my left bent knee in the same location as your video however, it hurt so bad I couldn’t take it. I felt like I was going to vomit. The pressure shot down to my ankle. I pleaded with my doctor to take the needle out and he did. After I shook it off he re-injected with my knee straight on top of the knee to which I felt no pain whatsoever.

I have had these Synvisc injections for at least 8 years now.I get them in 3 injections, one week apart. I found the 1st one is the most painful because my knees are already swollen and inflamed. The other 2 shots were just pricks on the skin to me. The more shots I get, the longer they work on removing the pain. Most of the time I can be almost pain free 9 to 12 months at a time. Got my last ones in 9/2021, but right knee blew up and I could hardly walk for days, (talk about pain, ouch) . One year later, it is now time for surgery on the right knee.

I’ve had one cortisone and my first gel shot with two more to go. The cortisone shot hurt a bit, but just for a second. I should add that I went into the doctor’s office that day limping in pain, so that may have been a factor in the shot hurting a bit. The first gel shot was virtually painless. I go for my next gel shot in two days.

You started out by saying 'this won't hurt,' but I noticed you weren't volunteering your own knees! I've had three series of steroid injections in my knees, thumbs and shoulders over the past two years. The first two sets weren't painful - I barely noticed them, but the last set were very painful. The needle insertion didn't hurt but when the fluid entered the joint it hurt like hell. I'm considering PRP because I've heard that it lasts longer, but I'm on Coumadin and I bridge for any procedure that could involve bleeding, and so far, bridging hasn't been a rewarding experience. Maybe I'll go up there to Canada and see you guys - you make everything seem like it's going to be fun!

I have AVN in my right knee and the surgeon that is replacing it gave me a steroid shot the actact same way because he wanted to see something. At that point my knee was swollen and very painful and I was sweating bullets when he said he wanted to inject it. After a minute of myself talking myself into it he quickly injected the needle and it was over before I even knew what happened, and he went under my knee cap without any freezing or topical numbing agents. I hate needles more than anything in the world and I always work myself up into a frenzy when I get one. With that said getting the shot into my swollen achy knee was less painful than 95% of every blood test I got. As a scope: I have advanced aven and both my hips were already replaced and now my knee. I wanted to say that so you understand the amount of pain I have been through and why I'm saying that you should not worry about a knee injection like I did before I actually had one. Good luck on yours, I'm sure you will be fine.

I just had my first knee injection yesterday, here in Canada. Only a small skin prick, like getting your blood taken and then I could feel like something moving a bit, inside my knee but it didn't hurt at all! And my surgeon said the same thing about the pain killer being injected at the same time but he tongue twisted it a bit. He said "why would I pick you with a needle just to pick you with a needle?". He gives it all at once and it was fine. It's just a bit tender today which he said might happen but it is fine. I am waiting for the relief to come which he said could take about a week. No worries!

Since an accident 9 years ago, I have been getting cortisone injections in my left knee and left shoulder, between 3 to 6 months apart. Here in Alberta, we are laying on a bed with an X-ray showing the Dr the precise location of the needle. As they insert the needle, they are injecting a freezing agent, then when they get to the point they need to be at, they leave the needle in and replace the syringe with one filled with cortisone. The entire procedure takes a minute, tops, and is usually quite painless, although I have had a couple good jolts over the years where obviously a nerve or something got poked. Having said that, I couldn’t believe how you “stabbed” that guy so quickly!!!

Had the synvisc injections several times. The first series was 5 (it was years ago). The third and 4th one were nasty. But the relief was worth it. The other ones were a two injection series. A little spray to freeze the area and no issues. And yes, there is a correlation between the skill of the surgeon and the way the injection goes.

I didn't feel the joint expansion as it fills the joint, it hurt the whole time it he injected it.. and I limped out hurting worse ..which every other time it was immediate relief. and it hurt worse the next day . My question is: what happens when you inject it in the muscle instead of the joint?

I have had multiple knee injections both for Synvisk and/or steroids and the amount of pain varied. I was always given freezing and some were done using fluroscopy. It was a different doctor each time. The best result both for pain and relief came from a family doctor with no guidance apart from his experience. I've had terrible post injection pain once for 2 weeks. It was always different but I found the injection pain was increasing each time. In the end, I didn't get nearly enough relief in order to justify the injection pain.

I must have a high pain tolerance or determination not to let the doc see that it could potentially hurt. I can handle it with very little discomfort. Once I had a cortisone shot place between my big toe and I almost came up out of the chair. I had to rely on my breathing in and out. The doc said it hurt worse because it was close to the bone. I think it hit the bone.🙄
