Thanks! Happy to help. Canaries have even calmer personalities than goldfinches and can get very attached to their owner. They're even easier to tame if you buy two of them, because one will always be braver than the other, so they will bounce off each other and learn things faster. It'll also be much easier to keep them happy, especially if they're your first birds. Best of luck! :)

Hi! I have two canaries and they are 3 weeks with me, but they are almost a year old and have been treated differently in the pet shop. Whenever I come close to them and we try to open the cage, they flop to the other side. How am I supposed to get them out? I love your content by the way! Everyone can see that you know what you are doing and you are doing it well! You don’t have to answer because I know you have a lot of other comments to answer, but if you can that would make my day! Hi Rachel, there's a bird taming playlist on this channel which will walk you through everything step by step! Canaries can be tamed but are a bit fickle, so you must think in the timeframe of weeks and months rather than days. In the meantime, don't force them to go out - they will come out on their own when they're ready! Again, the playlist has step-by-step instructions - just start at the first video and work your way through. Best of success!

I discovered that my canaries "let" me pat them when it is fairly dark. I think this is mainly because they can't see well enough to fly away in their cage. I talk to them and pat them very gently while they are standing on their perches. Over the last couple of months they are getting used to it and I have noticed they don't freak out as much when I walk past their cage or watch them now during the day time. They are only about 1 year old so I have a while to work on this with them.

Hi there, I occasionally do this, too, even though I know one shouldn't. Birds are just so fluffy and soft! It's alright to pet your canaries if you do it very, very gingerly and stop as soon as they show any signs of discomfort. You might also like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n56UbLSV39msiIU.html

Hi there I would like to ask few questions, my bird is with me for months (almost 6-7 months) but unfortunately I couldn't manage to have strong relationship with my bird. Here are the questions; How did you organize the cage interior design? How do you deal with the mess of seeds, feathers etc.? My bird was already mature when i had him, do. you think still I have chance to tame? I'm doing mining engineering so I travel a lot, I had to give him some other ppl when I'm not around, changing place, location of cage affects this process very badly. Do you have any advice for this? Do you cover the cage time to time? Well actually I have so many questions :) sorry. I appreciate you, your channel and videos are great. Take care Thanks
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Walter! Let's jump right into your questions: - The cage layout isn't special, I just made sure it was reasonably sized (80cmx40x60, which is really the minimum) and that the perches are at different heights, allowing for enough room for the bird to at least flap about a bit. I've always got an old bedsheet put over the back of the cage to protect the walls from any dirt. I've also lined the cage surroundings with scrap or newspaper, so once or twice a week, I can simply throw out the paper instead of having to clean everything. But that's just about everything that can be done about the messes a bird makes. (It goes without saying that the cage itself should be cleaned at least once a week!) - Yes, you can still tame your bird when he's mature. To get him there, you should be able to invest at least 1-2 hours a day over the course of two or three weeks. Anything less than that probably won't have any effect. Once your bird is tame, he will never forget. Goldfinches can get very attached to their owner, so travelling wouldn't be a problem. - I used to fully cover the cage at night but now I only cover the top and sides, leaving the front open. I noticed that the bird is more comfortable this way. However, if you have your bird cage in a room in which you'd like to keep the lights on after nightfall, it will be healthier for your bird to cover the cage with a dark cloth so that he'll get enough sleep. During the day, the cage should never be covered unless it is being transported somewhere (and in this case, it shouldn't be completely dark, because the bird might hurt himself if he gets startled and doesn't see where he's moving). Thank you for your kind words, by the way! You can always ask more questions if you have some :) Take care!

I have been owning a goldfinch for almost 10 years but it has lost its left eye 4 years ago due to an attack done by a kestrel. Hopefully, it survived and I took care of it since then. It looks pretty well, it even attacks when I do approach my finger which means that it has a lot of energy, but the problem is that it doesn't fly nor it climbs on the perch. It's been awhile now, and I still take care of it. Do you have any useful tip in which I could help it to regrow the feather and can fly again? Is there any hope for it to get back to the basics given its single-eyed issue?
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 6 жыл бұрын
Oh dear! Well if you've already owned your finch for almost 10 years, he/she is already pretty old for a finch, though they can live up to 17 years in captivity. So congratulations on keeping him/her healthy and well! Your finch probably doesn't fly because two eyes are necessary for spatial vision, and they sense it would be unsafe for them to fly. If your finch doesn't sit on the perch however, there seems to be something else at play. What do you mean by "regrow the feather"? Did your bird moult correctly? If you're unsure about the health of your bird, please do see an avian vet - they are not expensive at all and can often prevent/cure a lot of suffering.

Hello, I have a question, what do I do if I need to put some leafy greens for my canary, and need to stick my hand in there in order to clip to the cage Wall, she gets very scared whenever I have been sticking my hand there. Do I put my hand inside in order to feed her, or do I leave her alone?
@leporellothegoldfinch
@leporellothegoldfinch 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Maria, one's hand should never be put into the bird cage when the bird is in it. It's explained here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJh5nMZo3-Crp2g.html If your bird isn't tame yet, the best way is to clip in the salad when your bird is on her daily free flight - ideally when you want her to go back into the cage.

I got my beautiful babies from a pet shop two years back, prior to knowing how bad they can sometimes have it. I made sure to give them a healthy diet fit for them, made sure they were in a good temperature and calm environment. I’ve had them for around two years now and they don’t seem bothered by me looking at them. Anytime I’d try to move slightly closer to them, they’d all fly away in panic rather or not I was giving them a treat or replacing their food and water. When they the hatchlings were little, they were perfectly happy with being held, yet when they grew into adults they just stopped allowing me to be near them. At this point they just boss me around and yell at me to do everything the exact moment they hear me wake up. I wake up and they’ll hear me, I get a “GET IN HERE AND REMOVE THE CLOTH/CLEAN US NOW!” If they see the treats, they won’t forget about them and will go on and on till they get their way. (I don’t like giving them too much as I know they aren’t all that good for them.) They all have their own actions that causes a daily snowball effect. Seeing that two of my four original birds are always the ones to start the whole thing up. While I do love them, I just wish I could hold them again and not feel like I’m just a maid for them. ;--;

Hi there, please call a wildlife rehabilitator ASAP. If there is none in the area, take the bird to a vet as soon as possible, so that it can be adequately cared for! A layperson cannot do this, and most vets will treat foundlings for free. Please note that taking birds, even "saving" baby birds, from the wild is illegal in most countries, so not only will the bird likely die in your care, you also risk yourself getting into legal trouble. All the best!

Leporello the Goldfinch - Birdtaming Tips & Tricks Hi ^^ thank you for replying today i have taken the baby to the vets the vet said it appears to be very healthy and isn't showing any pain or discomfort she looked at its legs and she thinks it's toes might be broken so she wants me to carry on caring for it until it's able to fly and then bring it back to vets so that they can decide if it will cope in the wild. I've had the baby for a week now and I believe it's doing really well I've had experience in caring for wild birds and sick hedgehogs because I live out in the middle of no where and I don't like seeing things suffer.

@leporellothegoldfinch

At the risk of asking the obvious, but is your goldfinch a male or a female? Males will sing more enduringly and melodically. Also, young goldfinches learn most of their song within their first year, so if he's still young, try playing him recordings of birds and music you like! (I played Leporello mostly nightingale, song thrush and blackbird songs, and also lots of classical music when he was little) If he's older than that, he will still learn, but it will take longer and his song might not change as much. Best of luck!

I can't really help if you don't answer the question... point being, if your goldfinch is younger than a year, it is normal that he will sing less. The same applies if it's a female.

Hello there! I've watched most of your videos for some time now, and I'm having some trouble with my birds! If you could give me some insight it would be wonderful! My sister has left me a pair of gouldian finches for quite a while now (over a year now), being one a female and the other a male. She's reasonably calm, curious, has some trouble flying (my sister believes she has a minor mental problem that influences her flight, she hits walls and gets herself trapped in narrow places when she flies out of her cage) and ever since I applied the knowledge I got from your videos, she lets me pick her up when she's outside their cage without being afraid! That alone was a conquer, and I have you to thank for! He, however, has always been extremely cautious around me, my sister or anyone. He doesn't trust people, he instantly flies away from me when he's outside the cage (it takes forever to convince him to climb my finger, eventually we both get tired of flying and chasing around and I let him go back to his cage), he clicks his beak alot when I'm around. Generally, he's still very afraid of humans, despite being around me and my sister for a total of 3/4 years. I've been applying everything I know now to slowly gain his trust- never again do I put my hand inside the cage (the only way to get them outside is to put the feeders outside the cage and wait for them to get hungry and hop out), I've tried giving them treats (they eat nothing! they're not remotely interested in a small piece of cucumber, or apple, or spinach. they just don't want to try it out, and I don't know what to do about it!) Everyday, I sit next to the cage and apply the talking method so they know I'm not a threat. She's already used to it, but I can't seem to gain his trust at all. What can I do?

Congratulations on adopting two finches, and on already taming the female finch! That's a great success right there, you're definitely on the right track. - As for your male finch: Just like humans, birds come with different personalities, and some birds are more timid than others. Good news: Fearful birds may take long to tame, but they will become attached to you much more deeply than a boisterous bird (Leporello was a frightened bird, too). So just keep going! I suggest starting a taming diary for your male finch (or for both) in which you document your progress. Sometimes, many little successes over the course of a few weeks can feel like nothing, but a diary helps visualise the great progress you're making! Finches rejecting new foods is a common problem: Most pet shop finches are only fed a seed mix and have no-one and nothing to tell them what is edible in the early learning stages of their lives. The trick is to start with food items that are small and non-threatening (as you're already doing, well done!). Gouldians tend to like spray millet, corn, peas (boiled without salt), strawberries, grapes (cut in half) and pieces of watermelon. If they don't like one food, just keep offering fresh bits of it for about a week: this way, they will lose any fear they may have and will eventually try it. If it doesn't work, try another food item. Once you have found something that they like, you can start placing it in a special treat bowl. When they reliably eat from the treat bowl, one can often add other foods to it and they will try it simply because it's in their favourite bowl. Hope this helps, all the best!

first of all, thank you for the fast reply! I'm now trying with small grapes to see if it appeals to them (I've sat in front of the cage eating some in hopes of getting them to trust the grape is safe and tasty, she only chatted with me, he did as always and stayed vigilant around me..I will get it someday hopefully!) I have yet a last question! My birds don't seem to be used to bathing- that is- I've tried in different ways to provide them a way to bathe, such as leaving a small bowl of water in the cage, putting them in the sink with the thinnest stream of water running- none seem to trigger them into bathing on their own, or showing any interest in cleaning their feathers with the water. I often end up pouring a few small droplets of water over each of them everytime I clean their cage. Is this normal? and what should I do to encourage them to bathe?

My pleasure, it's always nice to hear from people who really care about their birds! No worries about the bathing - finches will only bathe when they feel absolutely, 100% safe, so it can take a while for them to loosen up and splash about. It took Leporello about six months to take his first bath (putting only his head and chest into the water), and he only started to actually hop _into_ the bathing dish after 3 years! If you wish to encourage bathing, I suggest putting a shallow dish of water on top of your finches' cage so they can bathe during their free flight; this way, they'll be in a territory where they are more likely to feel safe (their home + presumably high up). Hope this helps!

I have tried your advice with my goldfinch ( Elvis), and it truly works! Now I can go to his cage and give him food and water and he isn't all crazy! Now I can look at him and talk to him. And he is calm and replies with a Taweeet and a swish of his tail! Thank you so much, Jerry

@Leporello the Goldfinch - Birdtaming Tips & Tricks I know your videos are around 4 years old, but still very helpful! Do you still have Leporello, or do you have more now? I am in Canada and they are getting harder to get, but not impossible. It's just the prices have gone up, up, up! Elvis cost me $250 Canadian. That was through a friend who brought them in from Montreal. I have seen prices as high as $600 for a male. Thank you so much for your videos! Please post more?

@@jerryssalamon709 Thank you! Yes, I still have Leporello, though he is quite old now (eight and a half years). Many people have stopped breeding birds here, too - Leporello cost me 40€, but now you'd expect to pay at least 200€ for a goldfinch (if you find them at all, which is getting more and more difficult). I'll try to make more videos in the future but there is a lot going on right now - I hopee things will calm down a little soon! All the best to you and lovely Elvis!

Predators aren't the only ones with monocular vision. For example, orangutans and many other herbivorous primates have it too, for the purpose of safe manoeuvring among trees. Our own pre-human ancestors already had monocular vision before they began supplementing their previously herbivorous diet with meat, so the hunting advantage isn't actually the reason we came to have it, either.

I think you mean binocular vision. Monocular = eyes on the sides of the head being used separately. Surely that doesn't go for humans, unless the humans in your part of the world look different than here. ;)

Birds are incapable of hatred... they know only fear. Build trust like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mr2VoqSkp8qzdqM.html Also make sure you're not doing this, which is the reason of 99% of people saying that their bird "hates" them: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mJh5nMZo3-Crp2g.html
