Tamiya Hotshot Build Guide + Tips Part 1 - Front & Rear Gearboxes Steps 1-8

Hi and welcome to Part 1 of my build series for the re-released version of the Tamiya Hotshot.
This chassis goes together very differently to most modern Tamiya kits and there are some important things to look out for. This video focusses on the build of the front and rear gearboxes and attaching the motor, build manual steps 1-8. I hope you enjoy the build and the odd tip thrown in here and there - Cheers!
About the Tamiya Hotshot
The Hotshot, released in 1985, is a milestone as the first Tamiya 4 Wheel Drive chassis and the forefather of many similar chassis to come. The front and rear suspension both have single shocks and double wishbone system. The rear damper connects to the wishbones through a relatively complex system. The Hotshot chassis evolved during production, and was re-released in 2007 where the chassis has received a lot of smaller changes compared to the vintage ones.

Wonderful, informative video. I have built and repaired many different types of things in my life..model trains, model aircraft engine, live steam models, series Land Rover engines, etc...but never an RC buggy and just bought a Hotshot re-re kit. This will be a helpful addition to Tamiya's manual. Thank you for doing this series.

Lovely build video, Mark. You're going to love the Hotshot! Arguably one of the most iconic of the 80's Tamiya buggies. The mono-shock design looks so 80's, it's awesome!

Oh, wow, that was a joy to watch, Mark! Must be nice to put this piece of history together, it's fun to think when they designed this, they had never done a 4wd buggy before... Always gotta admire the engineering that goes into these, and to make it so that hobbyists all over the world can enjoy the build, it's almost making me sentimental, ha ha! Of course I'll be looking forward to next episode, see the chassis come together, it'll be great fun! Have a lovely weekend there, my friend!

Great video Mark, i have just completed a full strip down with a new Tamiya Sports Tuned Motor with a 15T pinion and fully ball raced a 2007 ReRe i purchased used, all new electrics too. Waited 35 years to get my hands on the Hotshot after having spent many an hour looking at them back in the 80s as a boy, still an awesome looking RC legend😎 I Ialso used the Tamiya Ceramic HG (£24) a tube but good stuff.

We are spoilt with the more modern Tamiya manuals and bags. They did make these complex to work on, I think that's why I prefer my Thunder Dragon chassis. I noticed the red piece of plastic on both gearboxes not my Boomerang.

Last! 😂 😅 🤣 Don't know how Paul does it! I'm always late to the party.... In fact I'm always late to everything in life full stop! 😂 This was an interesting one buddy. I've never built any of the shot family,. Looks like quite a complex build.... but fun none the less. Must have been tricky building those gearboxes and recording at the same time? The gearbox construction reminded me of the awkward and fiddly ones on the Monster Beetle /blackfoot/mud blaster.... having multiple components just resting in place whilst you carefully sandwich the two halves together without everything falling apart! It's interesting watching how these older design kits go together, as you get to appreciate how Tamiya have evolved in their kit designs, with the more modern kits being a lot simpler/less involved on the construction front. The only part I don't enjoy with the older models is those pesky E clips..... something that I am delighted has been pretty much fazed out over the years! I built a lunchbox kit whilst rained off this week (project tube box).... Lost track of how many CWO1's I've built over the years, I didn't even have to look at the manual! 😂 Still fun though.... I've got all the KZfaq channel stickers ready, just need to find somewhere warm and dry to spray the body shell now, going with top force Metallic green! Looking forward to part two matey! 👍 👍 👍

You gotta get up early to beat Paul! 🤣 TBH it's just a little game we play! Funny though! But yes, this is a VERY interesting build and it will get better, wait until you see the rear suspension setup! I'm loving it mate! And too right, it's very hard to build and film at the same time, especially with my crap eyesight, trying to keep my head out of shot... The gearbox does seem to be like and even fiddlier Monster Beetle Box! ...and I don't mind the E clips! 😅 Send me your address on WhatsApp, I think I got one Mark Bryan RC sticker left! Cheers! 🍻😎👌👍

Yep, definitely looking forward to seeing how that singular rear shock operates.... am I right in thinking that was the only time Tamiya ever done a mono shock on the rear? 🤔 A great model all in all, and a fundamentally relevant land mark in the Tamiya time line for sure! A Mark Bryan sticker would just finish things off a treat cheers mate! That would be particularly special as it is your last one..... Kinda like giving someone your last Rolo! Thank you! 😂 🙏 😊 The chassis turned out a treat as I accidentally drunk way too much on the build! 🍻 😜 Currently working on sticker placement preparation before I get the paint layed down, also trying to make up some Green Hawks speed discs for the wheels using pringles caps!! 😂 All good fun matey. 😊 👍 👍 👍 Hopefully it will look something quite special once finished.

@MarkBryanRC I certainly did. I can't do a video like that because I don't want to show the world the condition of my hands , I had an accident that led to having a lot of work done on my hands. Not too appealing. I can not wait for the finished product!! I picked up a turntable for mine to give it a little camera shot. Maybe you could work some video wizardry where they appear together?

Oh, those foam dog bone bushings would make a world of difference on any stock TT02. I used cut up pen spring sections on mine and it took all the slop out! Nice one Mark! Love the Tamiya build experience 💙

Looks good! some weird stuff goes on in these gear boxes! Don't know why in the manual they say put in the thrust bearing without any lube on them I never heard of a bearing being run dry? I always put some thin grease on mine when I build them. Can't wait to see it completed Mark!!

Mind you dont loose the pin out of the drive cup on the front gearbox. It needs pushing through to pick up the opposite drive cup
