It's not very often that an /interesting/ new superzoom lens gets released but this new option from Tamron promises good image quality and a brighter maximum aperture than usual. Can it really deliver?

This is my favorite lens on any system for all time. The compromises between focal length range, aperture, sharpness, AF speed, size, weight, ergonomics, and cost is absolutely amazing. I have taken so many great photos with this lens.

This is an impressive lens. I sold it after using it for a few months, but I regretted it a few months later, because when I checked my photo album, I found that more than half of the good photos were taken by it. Yes, I bought one again. After this time, I feel the value of this lens even more!

Great review and thank you so much for making it! I've used both this lense and the older tamron superzoom lense 16-300mm for aps-c cameras, and the image quality of the newer one for sony is way better and really satisfying. It may be the best option ever for travel photography.

FINALLY! This Tamron is actually the first superzoom ever, that rivals the venerable Olympus 12-100mm mft superzoom in optical quality. But now in full frame with a brighter aperture. Toss in the 18mm 2.8 and 45mm 1.8 Samyangs, and you have an affordable killer travel kit!

Yeah, I have the 12-100 and always considered it the type of lens that can cause you to buy into a system. The availability of the 28-200 is causing me to very probably make the switch to Sony. An A7C +28-200 is basically no bigger than an E-M1.2 + 12-100

I have been using this lens for a few months now on my Sony A7Riii and I really love it. I use it quite a lot as a walk around lens, most of the time during daylight hours. When using it in low light in the evening I use it with my camera on a tripod. The wide zoom range makes it quite a versatile lens.

Whew I've been waiting on this review since the 28-200's release! From personal experience it has the versatility of the APSC 18-135mm lenses with much better light gathering and sharpness. My only ding is that Tamron didn't make this a stabilized lens, as sometimes you need to crank that ISO up at 200mm to get sharp images at high MP.
@srijonmondal8842
@srijonmondal8842 3 жыл бұрын
I was waiting for it too and Indeed we miss the stabilization. But it makes the lens significantly lighter. Tamron 17-70mm APSC is heavy for the same reason.

This actually might be the ticket for me as an Sony apsc shooter. I imagine quite a few people already have the sigma 16 1.4 for wide angle, and this would cover just about everything else while offering a bit more on the telephoto side for those random bird opportunities than an 18-135. Would love to see this retested on an apsc to see if the image quality holds up as well as it did here

Also nice to see that A7R2 being upgraded, but (aside from price) do you think it would be better to go for the R4 instead for testing lenses with its 61mp resolution and its 26mp APS-C mode could do the job of both the R2 and the A5100 in 1 body.

Nah, I love the 42mp sensor of my new a7R III because it's perfect for lens testing. 61mp is too far away from Sony's 24mp cameras to be useful to people who own those (and there are many), and 42mp is roughly in line with the 45mp cameras I use for testing Nikon and Canon equipment :-) you do make a good point about shooting in APS-C mode though

my first experience with the tamron rxd serie lenses was disappointing (28-75 f2.8 and 20mm 2.8) mainly because of the distortion. Also my experience with tamron super zooms for the A mount is that Tamron has unacceptable distortion. But with this 28-200 distortion is very good controlled, and overall it performs much better than my sony 24-240. and 40% less weight as a bonus. I think for many photographers this is the only lens you will ever need. What really is missing is a focus hold / manual fucus button on the lens, as the one on the camera is not very ergonomically in use.

I'm not concerned with autofocus?? If anyone of the first two are better for image quality I can ignore autofocus of the Viltrox. Please share your ideas or make a comparative video about these three. All these three lenses are similarly priced. I like to shoot nature, animals in nature, portraits and all kind of events. I shoot almost always in good light conditions. If you, as a photographer with such a profile, have to choose between those lenses, witch one should you choose? And if picture quality is important? The price isn’t a big deal here in Belgium, with the current cashback on the Sony lenses the difference is more or less 200 dollar. Geert

I have this bought. No regret at all. I have it side by side to the 28-75. Honestly, you are not going to notice the difference at 28mm. At other focal length, the main difference is the aperture. The long end alone is better than the Sony 70-300 in the overlapping focal length! And if large aperture is not a priority, it is only marginally worse than the tamron 70-180 (which I also have). The convenience makes me shoot more photos I normally would have missed. This lens has given me more keepers than my 70-180 for that reason alone, despite the marginally worse performance. The only thing I miss on the 70-180 when I don’t bring it is the low light performance on the tele end

@@Dhuoorii I bought 70-200 G lens instead. Since Tammy's tends to collect dust and Sony G lens is water and dust proof.And Tammy's spiral busy bokeh is just not for me.The extra money on the Sony is worth it. I bought a used one and it wont depreciate very much.Do not buy a Tammy for a7r2.

@@TheKwadwo14 bought a used one for $800 usd, in perfect condition ! The G lens are so good. I'll only buy G series from now on. The motors are ridiculously fast and quiet,you can barely hear them it's sooooo crazy. Go try it at ur local Sony store. Forget about those plastic Tammys not worth it.

You will notice a drastic improvement with the R3 vs the R2...huge difference in my experience.(in general using Canon lenses at least)

I've noticed only a small difference in AF speed but a bigger difference if AF 'confidence' (locking on to your subject). Also I've been surprised to see a nice little improvement in high ISO image quality (among the other improvements that camera offers)

@@christopherfrost On my 24-70 L v1, big difference. On my 70-200L IS v1 big difference. AF speed and actually locking on. My R2 would hunt a lot.

In fact the CMOS filter are getting thinner everything new generation, you'll get less deffration on R3 compare with R2 even they use the same CMOS, and the R4 got the thinnest CMOS filter which produce finest image quality, I think Christopher should really consider to upgrade your Sony camera othervise it's not fair to compare with other cameras brands you use, i.e. Canon R5, Nikon Z7 they all outperform Sony A7R2.

It'd be great to compare this lens with the Nikkor Z 24-200mm.

No Test on an APS-C body? That could be an interesting range to work with on APS-C

Not really - 28mm isn't a wide enough angle. Much better to go with a smaller and less expensive APS-C superzoom like an 18-200mm lens

I had this lens on my a7iii on my trip to Sedona. I can not be any happier. This the best zoom lens Tamron ever made. I had Tamron 18-400mm on my canon 90D, the sharpness of the canon system can not match this lens.

Why does a 28mm lens imply intended use for a full frame camera? What would imply use for an APS-C camera?

At least you have the 18-300 on that mount. Perhaps not quite as good optically, but very versatile.
