Thanks for sharing. I'm just getting into tape machines and learning all I can. I'm curious why you chose 400 hz tone and 4.5k? Also, after you listened to the recorded tones you mentioned a 3 db loss. What causes that loss? Is it a weak record head, and what is considered a tolerable db loss?

I used the 400 & 4.5kHz tones because they're can be heard fairly well in the video. The specs call for the units record amps to be -3db. That's generally a good level that can be used with most tape formulations. You can adjust it to reproduce a stronger signal, but this can result in a distorted signal. Which machines are you using?

Hi Bigg Matt, I'm fully enjoying your nice videos, thanks for that in the first place. What I mentioned in the video is that during recording the tape was not running over the left pulley/tension arm, wouldn't that be of any infuence on the tracking and therefore the recording quality? In the comments nobody mentions it, did nobody see?

Wow, 4 years and I never noticed, good observation. Somehow, the tape managed to track ok despite not being fully in the tension arm groove, I suppose because of the roller and guide brought it back inline before it hits the tape. It worked its way into the grove a minute later. The 388 was very forgiving in this instance. Again, great observation.

Hey First of all, i feel the song in the vid But my question would be, how is the quality of the Tascam 388 compared to a standalone tape recorder Is it worth getting the Tascam 388? Does it have a special warm sound or is it more standard? I have the option to buy it for $ 2,000 +15 Tapes, from first hand Best regards

Hi Beatz, If you're creating music that requires multiple channels, and you want to capture your work in analog format, the 388 is a superb all-in-one machine to do it on. Great fidelity.. Depending on condition, $2K is a reasonable price for the unit. If you only plan to use it to record LPs and CDs, a stand alone unit would be a better choice.

Uh hello. I just upgraded the "bell" notification. My 388 is having some problems with the tape transport. The mixer section seems alright. All the inputs/outputs also working. I'm looking for a Tascam dealer in Toronto to see if I can get some servicing. 👍

Hello. I haveowned a 388 for about ten years this is the first video I have seen on calibrating the unit, thanks for sharing. I have a fully working machine, I'm not sure if it is calibrated correctly but it seem sto be running. It has some parts missing that I would like to ba able to obtain for example the bottom is missing, A previous owner seems to have 'fixed' the door so it comes off, and a knob cap got bumped off - also one of the screws for the end cheek went missing. If you can suggest any links for parts or additional help please notify me - nitrochromerecords@live.ca

@@5thcomm eh no not right now. One got it sort of working. I'm testing the tape transport...well it fast forwards but doesn't play...dont know what that is.
