I picked up one of these to try out with my R7 and have come across a problem. If I have the SELECT set to 1+2 to use two microphones and if I have one of the channels turned down or don't connect in a microphone then the channel that you expect to be clean has digital data audio on it. It is faint but I have sensitive ears and picked up on it right away. When reviewing the created audio if you turn your headphones up and listen to the unused channel normally you can hear it or if you use a audio editor and increase the audio volume on that channel a couple of times. The ditial data sounds goes in time with the speaking on the other channel. When I stop talking I just get the normal hiss. I wonder if this is just a defect in the one I received or a bug with the tascam and the new R7. If anyone gets a chance to try this test out let me know the results. Thanks!

As a side note if you have the select to IN1 with a single mic everything is fine and no noise in the file. I have tried just about every other combination of settings including video resolution and powering the tascam by battery and it remains. Any time its set to IN1+2 with a quiet channel you can recreate it.

I’ll have to try this. Can’t say I experienced any digital noise on mine. I did have a Dell computer some years ago that had the digital noise you are talking about. I believe it was caused by a poorly isolated signal. I’ll try to test it out sometime this week. Thanks for posting.

I drifted over here after spending all kinds of time watching reviews of audio XLR interfaces and mixers. With this model, you get the convenience and mobility of hotshoe powering, with fewer cords, offset by the reduced latitude that a small audio interface offers. I liked your demo of a gain hungry dynamic mic, but I wasn't sure of your message. Are you saying the cloud lifter is necessary, is the Tascam by itself unable to power the Shure XM7B? Other interfaces at this price point are able to power that mic to full volume without anything else. Many amateurs would be happy with a bare bones option that doesn't require much else. Price wise the interface is expensive when one looks at similar devices with more features that are not hotshoe mounted, even within the Tascam line.

As I recall the Tascam did not need the Cloud Lifter. It’s a pretty capable audio adapter.

If I connect it to R3 and set it to inputs 1,2, will the two tracks be recorded separately at the volume level I set to stereo automatically? Is it comparable to a typical field recorder quality?
@angryrabbitproductions1690
@angryrabbitproductions1690 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you connect it to the R3 and select 1,2 it will record the channels as two separate tracks with the levels you selected for each input. As for audio quality, I think it sounds great.

Using canon r6 and now r5c - we often run interviews with two people on separate lav mics into a zoom HN4. I'm just trying to work out if this will do a better job. I'm guessing i can just monitor seperate inputs in camera? Will have to find a cold shoe accessory to hold both receivers too. Looking for a really good run-n-gun setup
@angryrabbitproductions1690
@angryrabbitproductions1690 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely it can replace the Zoom HN4. The audio quality is pretty good from the Tascam. Maybe a bit better than the Zoom. I think it will be a cleaner setup with the Canon R5C as that cameras supports the digital hotshoe. You can monitor levels for both inputs… there is a headphone jack right on the Tascam. I believe the camera’s built in headphone jack can also be used to monitor levels. Though I generally plug directly into the Tascam.

The Tascam has a cold-shoe on top of it. So that's where you can attach your Zoom HN4. On the Canon EOS R5C, you can record 4 seperate channels (the R3 doesn't have that, as far as I know). Once you attach the Tascam to the R5C, it's XLRs become CH1/CH2 and the internal 3.5mm jack of the camera becomes CH3/CH4. Output 3 of the Tascam does nothing. I'm currently working on a R5C + Tascam video.

@@EmeraldAudiovisual thanks. Question: If I record two rode II go mics into the tascam (via the 1 receiver) will it sound the same as just putting the rode go mics into the camera?
@EmeraldAudiovisual
@EmeraldAudiovisual 2 жыл бұрын
@@regnismada4936 The R5C records at max 24bit 48 kHz. The Røde Wireless Go has the same max sample rate output: 24bit 48 kHz. So unless you're recording in a video mode, that has a lesser audio sample rate, then there should be no difference in quality between what is recorded in the camera than in an external recorder.

Looking to purchase an R5C and of course ended up here. There’s a review in B&H saying his stopped working after several months and that the guy who fixes them has a pile of them sitting around with no parts supplied to fix them from Tascam. Wish my MA-400 was compatible with the R5C. Anyway how’s yours holding up?

No issues yet. Though, I only use it sparingly… mostly when I need to keep things compact and travel fairly light. My go to is my Zoom F6; Which gets used daily.

Hi, with this unit you get 3 audio channels of audio? Two XRL? How do you adjust the third one? No dials on the unit? Thanks
@angryrabbitproductions1690
@angryrabbitproductions1690 2 жыл бұрын
It’s only two channels at a time on the Canon Eos R3. There is a select switch that allows you to utilize channel on controls for channel 3. On some cameras this might be possible from the menu? But none of my cameras support this menu functionality. I’m hoping Canon does an update for the Eos R3 to support the full 4 channels. FYI: The unit supports 4-channels, but only has 3 inputs.

Greetings, I'm using this Tascam with the supplied analog adapter shoe and coiled cable on an R5. An important question seems to be how to most ideally set the levels because with the R5, one not only has to set the levels on the Tascam but manually inside the R5 as well. Using the hot shoe version with your R3, do you have to set your R3 sound levels manually like me or does the Tascam somehow "take control" and set it to the R3 gain to an ideal level automatically? If you set your R3 manually, where do you put your gain? I've been setting the R5 sound level manually to about 25% gain and that seems pretty good to keep noise floor down. With this setup and a phantom powered hypercardioid mic the gain on the Tascam rides at about 50% for a good interview vocal from a boom. Thanks for the review on the Tascam unit!!
@angryrabbitproductions1690

The Tascam is designed to work digitally on the R3, so I only set the level on the unit. The sound recording options are grayed out when the Tascam unit is attached to the camera. On the Tascam, I have the gain knob set to the 5th level marker. The VU meter on the camera reads about half or just over when speaking ia at a normal level and at a distance of 1’ from the microphone. Granted, setting levels comes down to a number of factors: ambient noise, microphone sensitivity, distance from speaker etc… Thanks for the question. I hope my response was helpful.

@@angryrabbitproductions1690 Thank you for your reply! Yes, based on what you said, I think the Tascam "talks" via the digital connection to the camera and sets the in-camera gain to what Tascam feels is the ideal level. In "analog" mode with the R5 I have to set the in-camera gain manually to what I think works best. It's a trial and error thing but the good news is that the pre-amp in the R5 is FAR superior to the Canon 5D series. Much quieter. Having said that, I still set the R5 gain pretty low at around 25% and I too am setting the Tascam unit at about noon for good boom / interview audio levels. Appreciate your channel! P.S. The other nice thing about digitally connecting to the camera is that (correct me if I'm wrong) when you are using the Tascam phantom AA battery pack, the Tascam unit knows when the camera is on or off and automatically shuts off the AA power supply accordingly. I've already gone thru a bunch of AA's as I always forget to turn the pack off at the end of the day.

I’ll have to look into the use of the battery sled with the digital hotshoe. Honestly, I’ve yet to find the mic that requires it. I even connected my Shure SM7B with a Cloud Lifter and didn’t need the battery sled; Levels were strong and the recorded audio sounded both clean and loud. What microphone are you using?

@@angryrabbitproductions1690 I haven't tested w/o the sled either but assumed I needed it as it's small condenser mic. It's the Joly-modded Octava MK012.

Unfortunately, no. This accessory requires the new digital hotshoe that is featured on the R3 and R5C.

I just bought this and to clarify AngryRabbit, mine came with the analog adapter shoe. You have to then use the provided 1/8" male to male coil cable to connect the Tascam to the mic input on the R5. So, yes, it's not as ideal as the R5c or R3 hot shoe mount (no cable needed) but by design, it does work with what I think could be any camera with 1/8" input jack.
