As drummer for the Foo Fighters for over 20 years, Taylor Hawkins has drummed his way through everything from Reading & Leeds Festival, to Radio 1 Live Lounges to sell out stadium shows.
But what does it take to become a drummer? What inspires someone to pick up a pair of drumsticks in the first place? And just how important is the drummer to a band?
In this programme, Taylor gives us a guided tour of his drum kit, talking to Radio 6 Music's Steve Lamacq about his childhood, his influences, his favourite drum loops, and what it’s like drumming with both Alanis Morissette & Dave Grohl.

We’ve lost so many phenomenal musicians… but this one really hurts. Godspeed, Taylor. And thank you for the many rocking tracks over the last 25 years.

This is why I’m so grateful for KZfaq. Allowing people to come back and appreciate legends like Taylor anytime we want and hopefully for generations to come. Rest In Peace Taylor Hawkins

Loved every minute of this! As a 10 year old girl in 1957 who wanted to play drums, I was told no, you can have a piano. So I studied piano for years. But all I ever heard in songs and in concerts was the drums. In 2014, after finishing radiation treatment for breast cancer, I decided if not now, when. As luck would have it, a School of Rock was opening in my neighborhood and was taking adult students. In a week, I bought a DDrum kit for $400 and had lessons lined up. I found out that I was naturally in the pocket. Within months, I was in the adult performance group and in the following 4+ years played at venues around the city. It took me 57 years to do this. It is never too late. I will not be what I could have been had I started earlier, but it is still a hell of a lot of fun. I am now 72 and still playing as much as I can, even though I am no longer in a band. (Fell last year, broke my hand, took a long time to heal, played with one hand for awhile, got replaced, blah blah blah.) Thank you for this great interview, masterclass, whatever you call it! It has energized me! Play as much as you can, play songs, rock on!

I absolutely love Taylor’s honesty here. Can’t play double bass, struggles with playing grooves, anxiety about recording and playing live. Shows true humility.

The claim that William Goldsmith doesn't know how to perform in the studio can be refuted by listening to any Sunny Day Real Estate album.

Can we just appreciate the amazing interviewer as well? He knows exactly how to get Taylor to talk and shut up.

Rest In Peace Taylor, your contribution to rock music will never be forgotten. “Sunday Rain” is still one of my favorite Foo Fighters tracks. Thanks for the incredible music dude. Fly high.

This interview makes you feel like Taylor is sitting in your basement talking to you. Such a genuine likeable guy on top of being a monster musician. This loss is going to sting for a long time. R.I.P.

People don't realize how hard drums are to learn. So much multi-tasking and the band relies on you to keep the beat. Great Masterclass!

Even the greatest drummers struggle with Bonzo's drumming on Fool In The Rain. Nice thing about Taylor is he explains his weaknesses and how he built up his strengths. Great to see his son has the drumming DNA of his father.

He was obviously a great rock n roll drummer but he seemed like such a nice/friendly guy. What sad loss on a human level.

Great interview, great stories, sad for him to leave so soon. He was our neighbor when my son Ian Harrower was in grade school. We lived on Mountain View Drive in Laguna Beach. Every day after school, my son would walk home, and Taylor would be in his garage playing drums (circa 1985-86), and he would stop and listen for awhile. Ian also went on to become quite a drummer as well. Music is the best way to express yourself and connect.
