*I once taught a course on American Literature to Japanese students, and chose "The Heiress" to represent Henry James, as it is a film adaptation of James's "Washington Square." Of all of the film adaptions that I showed them, "The Heiress" captured their interest the most. (And fortunately for me, "Washington Square" and "Daisy Miller" are the only two books by James that I find readable myself, as they both lack the long, serpentine sentences with which that author is most associated.)*
