So lets crack on with these awesome travel tips about around the world planning.
TIMESTAMPS:

* What accommodation - 2:45
* Diet - 4:20
* Social Scene/Activites - 5:38
* Vaccinations - 6:08
* Insurances - 7:19
* Sea/Air Shipping - 8:27

Formula for working out number of days to ride the trip:
Take your total mileage of your trip, divide it by an estimate of how far you want to ride each day, to give you a guide on how long it will take you to just ride that distance - let’s call that A.
Then divide (A) by 3 (or however many days you want to ride inbetween stop overs) and whatever the answer is - let’s call that B, just add A + B together to = C (the total time to travel that section, allowing for time off the bike to sightsee and do stuff)
Total Mileage/daily mileage limit = A
A/3 = B
A+B = C

I might add to the cost: 1) Bribes at borders 2) Replacement parts bike contingency if/when the machine is dropped 3) Some medical contingency money which might not be immediately covered by travel insurance 4) Emergency cash reserve that can be transferred to a local bank/courier (Amex is good for this) Excellent video btw

I flew with my bike on the same plane from Heathrow to Montreal via Air Canada for £1200 (me and bike) in 2015. If you take normal sea freight at £650-£700 +£150 hidden charges plus say £350 economy to USA it comes to the same. If you are a shipping virgin DO NOT be fooled by advertised shipping prices. If you add the extra travelling costs by taxi to remote ports and all over the town and back to Customs and hours of paperwork then add Port Charges, blah, blah, blah, it all adds up. And what happens if the ship does not unload for a day or even a week? More hotel charges! (been there got that T shirt). BTW don't forget the cost of renting a van and dropping it off at Southampton or Liverpool too! In contrast, flying with your bike via Air Canada you are literally riding your bike within 1 hour of landing as they do not strip them down and you are allowed 1/4 tank of fuel. USA Customs take 3 hours and body search you coming into the office for weapons and treat you like a terrorist. Canadian Customs take 3 minutes with a cheery smile. No competition! Next day ride over the USA border and don't mention your British bike, they won't ask. They don't care about drive-overs anyway, only shipped vehicles. Get an EPA certificate (Emissions exemption) online at least a month ahead though in case the Police ask for it.

Yes, Air Canada figured out this untapped market! Quite a few Americans from the Western USA will drive to Vancouver British Columbia to load their bikes out to worldwide destinations with Air Canada as opposed to American options. Hope AC can survive the pandemic...I've yet to get my Africa Twin to Europe.....

Great vid. You’ve done it all: how to plan; worked the plan; measured your results; and continuously improved. Many will balk at the cost, but putting away funds for such a trip is a good practice to learn. Saving pays off in many ways, a trip, that guitar, retirement. Don’t give up on the dream, start paying it off now. Great job!

Great info Bruce, that figure you came up is in the ball park of my calculation, roughly about what it cost me to live at home for a similar period. I work as a motorcycle courier and do around 50,000 Klms a year down here in the colony of OZ using a DR650 and it cost me between 6.5-7 thousand dollars a year to keep the bike on the road and as you know OZ is not a cheap place to live and may I add I am Scottish by birth and suffer from the old syndrome of short arms and deep pockets. I am a new subscriber and enjoying the channel very much, loved the around the world vid's a lot, loved the tour around Scotland series also, finally after 45 years of living in OZ I got to do a trip back to the old country and did that loop in reverse on a Bike 4 1/2 years ago and loved every bit of it. Keep up the good work. 👍👍👍 Always love it when a Scot talks in the "posh" accent so the heathens understand them. 😂😂😂

Brilliant vid - straight talking. I recently failed completely during a trip to France. My riding buddy (who is no longer a buddy of any type!) tried to do everything on the cheap and it ended up being more expensive!!! Penny wise, pound foolish as my old man used to say. Anyway, the figure you gave was a bit less than I thought it would be - I reckoned on 30K, but that was just a wild guess. I have no intention to ride around the world in one hit but wish to try getting as far as I can overland without any eye watering shipping costs. I am going to try Spain next year and will probably go East in 2020 but you have given me great food for thought - thanks again!

A friend and I were working out those kind of numbers for just a Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Ushaiia, Chile and back. Just the number for fuel cost was awful. We figured an average of 400 mils a day and for the distance we were talking a 425 day adventure. With an average cost factored in of $120 a day we ran the calculation for the total cost. Oh my! That came out to something like 2 years + of my entire wage. That might be a bit of a challenge. I still want to do it though. Even if we rode shorter distances, and had to spend more days doing it.
@teapotone
@teapotone 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, well if you’re going to be on the road for that length of time, it’s going to cost a fair bit. Ok then, if you’ve got your rough total figure worked out, then now I’d sit down and work out a plan that would let me raise that amount. Can you sell anything? - property - vehicles - furniture - clothing - anything at all, I literally sold everything I owned to help raise funds for my trip. What about organising some fundraising events, like a sporting event, family bbq and fair held at a local sports club ground maybe? Think outside the box and focus everything on getting the money together over the next few years, and you WILL do it 👍
@baltsosser
@baltsosser 6 жыл бұрын
At the moment no. Nothing on that order that could be sold. I have no family within 1k miles of me so I am on my own for fundraising. I'll come up with something I'm sure. Thanks for the positive feedback.

I've found 400 miles/day an absolute killer (and I have a very well faired sports-tourer). I did one trip (2.5k Miles) on a very tight time budget and it was the worst trip ever. You end up being on the bike with no breaks and it becomes a chore. My buddy and myself were thinking about getting a uhaul and driving the bikes back. Both of us didn't mention this until we got back and then we started talking about the brutality of the trip and that we'd both had the same thoughts !! My cruising goals are usually 250 Miles a day, 3days on 1 or 2 days off. As far as hotels/camping, 1 day hotel/motel/hostel, 3 days camping.
@teapotone
@teapotone 6 жыл бұрын
Yep 400 miles a day can be a lot if you’re not riding on highways etc. To just cover distance, highways are great and you can easily munch the miles, but they are soulless and boring. For real Travel and adventure you have to get off the highways and hit the back roads, stop in the little villages and towns, make use of the local knowledge you’ll find by talking to people in cafes and garages as you go. 400 miles a day in these situations is just not realistic. 200 miles a day may even be a challenge at times!

Seems like a lot but people underestimate how much they even spend at home in that amount of time. Over a year without working is hard but if you live simply while saving for it, you will be used to the simple living you will experience on the road 😊

It's quite more than I would've guessed! Thanks for this! I'm planning to do an around the Americas Trip in 2020 (fingers crossed) and found this very informative! A few notes to add though: Maybe mention the border and passport thing? you sound UKish so that's an European passport which is like, one of the best passports for traveling, but people like me (Venezuelan) have to do a lot of research about Visas and stuff for this kind of traveling. I know it was probably not so hard for you (or maybe very hard and you just want to forget about that chapter of your life and if so Sorry for making you remember the horrors of bureocracy) but for people like me who don't have golden passports it's quite hard to travel overseas and to other countries so maybe mention stuff related to that? Also this is the first of your vids I've watched and I plan to watch all of them so, If you have mentioned this kinda stuff before just disregard the whole comment after "very informative!" and live even happier! PS: your beard is awesome PPS: what bike do you recommend for this kinda travel? I say you used a sport bike while I have my eyes set on a cruiser. Cheers!

I will continue viewing you videos, I too want to travel de world! YOu choose a sports bike, why? only one other person had done this (a guy on a R1 from Europe) it is by design not the "ideal bike" but I do not care about ideal, I want to do it on my scooter or my 150 cc DP bike, why? because it is what I have or could buy and still have money for the trip

This is brilliant. I've wanted to do a trip from India to the Isle of Man for the TT. This gives me a fair idea and places to look for. The costs are certainly high, and as a person holding an Indian passport it will be difficult to get all permits sorted. But it's gonna be interesting to try. Thanks for this

Food for thought. Honestly I had no idea it was that much. Didnt even consider some of those categories. But my bubble isn't burst just yet. I think I will do some smaller trips in my own Country first and test out my gear, there is a lot to see and do here (United States) I could spend years exploring. Meanwhile I can be saving up for an overseas adventure that honestly would be more along the lines of less Countries and probably less than a month in duration. We can't all afford to spend months doing world trips, but we can all make memories that will last us a lifetime. Databyter
