Nissan’s ‘Godzilla’ built a formidable reputation on race tracks in the early 90’s, not least of all in the hands of Gibson Motorsport. With run away wins in the Australian Touring Car Championship, the R32 GTR was a force to be reckoned with and forced the rule makers to rethink the direction of the championship. In this video we get a unique and rare insight from Alan Heaphy, the man responsible for Gibson’s GTR development program.

Great informative interview guys! Back in the day I had a VHS from the 1990 Bathurst showing the televised action highlights from the days race. The thing that really got my attention (being on the other side of the world), was the animated graphical portrayal of the GTR's various systems etc and technical breakdown during the pre-race intro. The VHS is long gone but I've never been able to find the video anywhere else. Is it on youtube or similar anyone? I'm sure I'm not the only one that would enjoy seeing it again.

The opportunity for such an interview must have been epic, great feature as always HP Academy. Entertaining mixture of technical insight and performance details, the gentleman from Gibson was quite pleasant as well. Is there any chance I could find out what brand of aftermarket engine management ecu was used, or were they working some a solution which was completely custom? I ask because I remember how dominating the IMSA specification Nissan 300ZX was against the likes of Jaguar and Porsche. The team that ran that IMSA GTP ZX-Turbo program was Electramotive and they clearly stated one of their biggest advantages was the electronic engine management solution which they used, and from what I recall it was custom and not off the shelf. As a bonus hearing the gentleman at Andial, the company responsible for running the IMSA program for Porsche, highlight the challenges faced with the existing electronic engine management solution was greatly insightful. I have never had a chance to hear what it was like for some of the DTM teams using the Bosch Motorsport packages at the time but I bet it would be just as insightful. Thanks for a great feature High Performance Academy!

That's one thing I hear from so called experts these days about the RB26 engines and that is they are not particulairly strong compared to other Japanese engines of the era. And yet, 30 years ago these guys were making 600+hp last for 2000kms on a race engine. It's good to hear real facts from people that actually developed these engines rather from those who just assume facts from what's heard on the the grapevine.

I believe in the early development the blocks were cracking quite regularly.Then NISMO released a revised engine block (N1 spec,) with high nickel content and revised water jackets etc.That and new engine mounts solved the engine blocks splitting. Still a pretty tough motor. 2jz has the highest quality engine block of the whole lot.Very consistent castings and hardest iron.Its about 15kg lighter than RB block, and at least as strong.
@Carlos-kk4nw
@Carlos-kk4nw 2 жыл бұрын
@@pinny492 hi, N1 block are not stronger. I suggest you look at herman's block testing from PRP. And regarding block spliting, it seems that the front diff been integrated into the oil pan has a lot to doe with it. I do agree about the 2jz part tho.
@pinny492
@pinny492 2 жыл бұрын
@@Carlos-kk4nw Well, regardless of whether it's stronger or not, the N1 is a revised casting, as evidenced by being a different shape to the regular rb26. The revision was undertaken as a result of multiple block failures reported by Gibson motorsport team, and perhaps other teams in Japan or Europe who were racing them in group A. Perhaps the N1 is no better, I can't confirm this. There were other measures taken e.g revised engine mounts which apparently helped remedy the situation.

joshua walcott mate that car was developed in 1990......full season in 91 and as you heard restrictions in 92 that car could have been developed into anything especially if the R34 came on the scene............but they got rid of group A because Ford and Holden were too lazy and crying over it’s success..........absolute biggest travesty in Australian motorsport

@@feydespiel. 4wd is not always an advantage.. Of course the gtr system is awesome because it's not always 4wd but still half the track (track dependant) it is against you all the same... starting with the 150 extra kilos you carry for the privilege. My bet is other than some obvious advantages like off the line and wet tracks a 2wd version would have been just as fast on average... Skylines are a nicely balanced race bred car from the ground up... Awesome machines!
