#Technics #SL1200GR Grand Turntable #Unboxed Launched in 2016, the SL-1200G combined Technics‘ traditional analogue technology and advanced digital technology, while redesigning parts throughout. Its outstanding performance literally rocked the hi-fi market and redefined the reference for direct-drive turntables. Parts that were inherited from the SL-1200G were newly developed for the SL-1200GR, beginning with the coreless direct-drive motor and precise motor control technology that eliminated the cogging that originated from rotation irregularity, and including a low-vibration, high-rigidity platter and high-sensitivity tonearm. By these measures, the level of performance clearly outperforms the usual standards of its class. The SL-1200GR invites more audio enthusiasts to enjoy music with the rich, robust sound of analogue records.

Coreless Direct-Drive Motor Achieving Stable Rotation
In 1970, Technics commercialised the world‘s first direct-drive turntable, and the system took the world by storm. Unlike belt-drive and other systems, direct-drive systems rotate the motor at low speed and directly drive the platter, thus providing numerous advantages, such as the almost complete absence of degradation in S/N ratio due to motor vibration and deceleration mechanisms, as well as high reliability over a long period time because of not requiring parts replacement.
And in 2016, Technics developed the twin-rotor, surface-facing, coreless direct-drive motor with rotor magnets placed on both sides, thereby eliminating the rotation irregularity of the motor, referred to as "cogging," which was a unique issue for direct-drive systems. This motor was adopted for the SL-1200G, which once again drew a significant response in the hi-fi market. The SL-1200GR inherits the same design philosophy with the new development of a single-rotor, surface-facing, coreless direct-drive motor, resulting in the elimination of cogging.
High-precision Motor Control for Ideal Rotation Conditions
The rotation control, which verifies and corrects the precision of the motor, uses the latest motor control technology cultivated in the development of Blu-ray disc devices, just as that used by the SL-1200G. Sine waves stored in ROM are used for the control waveforms at constant speed, and this achieves smoother and more stable rotation compared with using the simple sine wave generation with an external coil as in the conventional SL-1200MK5. In addition, the electrical circuitry has had tuning performed so that the newly developed motor of the SL-1200GR achieves maximum performance.
To increase the inertial mass and reduce vibration, the shape of the aluminium die-cast portion was optimised by simulation. At 2.5 kg (including the rubber mat), the SL-1200GR platter is 0.8 kg heavier than that of the previous SL-1200MK5. Also, the back surface of the platter has strengthening ribs added to improve rigidity. Increasing the surface area of contact with the deadening rubber achieves damping characteristics that are more than twice those of the SL-1200MK5.
Tonearm Achieving High Initial-Motion Sensitivity
The tonearm tracks the rotation of the record and enables reading with high precision, and the tonearm inherited by Technics is the traditionally used static-balance universal S-shaped tonearm, employing an aluminium pipe with excellent light weight and rigidity for the material of the tonearm pipe. With its gimbal suspension construction, the tonearm bearing section uses a cut-processed housing that employs high-precision bearings, as in the SL-1200G.
Also, the installation section of the insulators is equipped with a vertical adjustment mechanism using screws. This eliminates the rattle that occurs when the turntable is installed in a rack or the like, and prevents unwanted vibration. In addition, exact horizontal adjustment of the platter and record surface reduces rotation irregularity due to slanting, thereby enabling more stable record playing.

The purpose of the pitch control, outside DJ use, is to adjust to records recorded incorrectly. The table’s speed is precisely controlled by microprocessor and needs no adjustment to run at the correct speed, adjustment is proved to allow it to run at an incorrect speed. This way you can listen to an imperfect record at the imperfect speed it was recorded at.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this! I got a 1200GR recently but had a problem with the platter on my unit. My retailer allowed me to exchange it for a 1210GR but I needed to repack my first unit with the original packaging. This video helped me to do exactly that. Thanks so much!

Got the 1210 GR. Same one, but in black, hence the model number. Excellent and beautiful turntable! Combine it with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95SH/H cartridge with Shibata stylus, and I don't think that you will hear much - or any - difference from a turntable setup that is 10x more expensive.

Nice review. I also got the GR here in the US. It replaced the last technics I bought back in 1983. I still like the classic silver over the black. I agonized for 3 years for a new turntable before the GR came out. Didn't want some made in China knockoff!

Just the person who can answer this question: is it worth $1700 plus tax to upgrade from an older unit? I have a mkii in excellent condition with KAB upgrades but I’m not sure I can justify it, even if all I can come up is “I just want it”, which can be a good enough reason as any, I suppose.

@@DG-ie5ip No, I didn’t; just sticking with the mkii for right now. Not in the mood to put out $1800 (added the tax) for one. I’m not a DJ and never intended to use it as such. I haven’t heard of any credible source that’s said the Malaysian models are substandard - in fact I’m seeing less complaints about the tonearm lift lately.

The pitch control, in relation to non DJ use, is to allow for adjustment away from 33.33/45/78 for records that were recorded incorrectly, these tables need no adjustment to maintain the correct speed as it’s controlled by microprocessor.

If you look at the specs of the 1200G, like wow & flutter, it is the same as the GR. Of course, the G is heavier and uses tougher materials, but the GR, in my opinion, is with no doubt the best value for the bucks. You will save money, and you will probably get the same sound quality. Just get a very good cartridge/stylus combination and a good cable and pre-amp. I can not comment on the Project turntables. "Expensive usually means better. Too expensive doesn't mean much better".

Steve Guttenberg had a video where he compares SL1500C, 1200GR and 1200G. With the 1500C and 1200GR sounding nearly identical, and there being a substantial difference in sound between the G and the GR. If you can afford the G, it's a no brainer. It's worth noting that the Magnesium tonearm of the G is far better than the cheaper aluminum one in the GR and 1200C. The GR is still fairly decent in its own price bracket, but despite the looks, the GR and G are totally different animals.

I prefer my SL-1200G model. The GR models are from my point of view, in Germany we say it is no meat no fish. I‘m honest, for real DJing the Mk7 or the Reloop 7000 mk2 players. For real good high end the only one SL-1200G model. It‘s a good player in the higher mid place. But the GR models are always a compromise. One thing is true for all or most of all SL-1200/1210 models and I forgot to mention, as an aging DJ once said, girls are coming and going, the 1210s are for life.

2:53 Aww why didn't you throw the platter to the side as well? 😞 But seriously, throwing all that stuff aside looks ridiculous. When are you going to do an unboxing of the SL-1200G? When you do, don't forget to throw the 8lbs brass platter aside! 😂😂
@QoraxAudio
@QoraxAudio 2 жыл бұрын
So many inaccuracies in the information you provide... For example the coreless motor (7:56) that isn't unique for the new 1200 turntables. Back in the 80s there were other brands that put coreless axial motors in their higher end DD turntables (like Sony, Denon and Micro Seiki). The big difference is that these new Technics motors have more poles, use stronger magnetic material and more accurate speed control. 8:40 No, the pitchfader isn't to ensure it's running on 45/33, when the pitchfader is set at 0, it should be correct already - otherwise the pitchfader requires calibration. For audiophiles, the pitchfader is to deviate off the standard speeds, to compensate for records that aren't cut/recorded exactly at the correct speed. 9:12 No, there aren't separate strobe dots for 50 and 60Hz. There's just one set of 4 dots that's independent of your powerline frequency. The row with the big dots will always be the row that indicates 0% pitch regardless of 33/45/78rpm or 50/60Hz, so it should freeze when the pitchfader is at 0. It's independent from the powergrid frequency because the turntable generates its own strobe light frequency. The index for what dot means what can be seen at your own pictures lol.. just look at 12:11 It's printed on the top plate, right next to the strobe LED. Clearly states the percentages of each dot.
