Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

Hi Tina 👩🏻‍💻I’m doing a coding boot camp online and one of the requirements is to do a “coffee chat” with 2 new people in tech a week and I’m not sure how I’ll do that haha but if you’d be open to a 10 min coffee chat on zoom or something that’d be awesome! No worries though👩🏻‍💻 I have to get comfortable asking so it’s still a start😅

Some quality content right here. Really liked it. Made a summary - 1. No pain no gain (Sign up for painful things, have accountability) 2. Focus on one thing. Tips to achieve this 2.1 Input based goals(Ex: work 10 min on script) 2.2 Eat the frog(Indulge in the one thing first thing in the morning) 3. Just show up(set the bar low to avoid failure) 4. Keep score. Track progress to 4.1 measure how far you've come from the beginning 4.2 Clarity/proof of having made progress. 5. Memento Mori: Remember that you are going to die. Avoid being regretful in the end. 6. Get out of your head(Do two push ups and take a cold shower - rejuvinate yourself when feeling low) 7. Stop using social media Caution: lookout for signs of burnout.

Girl me too! I straight up spent 2 years of my life eating snacks in bed and watching anime, but now I'm finishing up my last courses in linguistics and going into a double major for computer science. For anyone who's interested I recommend listening to the podcast episode called You, But Better on Hidden Brain. Behavioral scientist Katy Milkman goes over various of ways to set up your weaknesses against yourself so you stay motivated

Hee! I do a double bachelor linguistics + compsci too! I do also work fulltime. It’s really more about discipline than motivation, I guess! If you do what challenges you or makes you feel good about yourself then the motivation isn’t really necessary but the discipline to go and do it, is a whole different thing.

My tip for the first thing is don't let the thoughts that you only did that one thing today drown you.

In my second uni semester I made it a goal to at least attempt an assignment the day it was given, as I struggle with procrastination. Hey Tina! This is not a diagnosis or anything, but what you do sounds a lot like me and I just got diagnosed with ADHD (the inattentive type) a couple of months ago at 36 years old. I suggest that you try to check with an expert on this because if it's true, calling yourself lazy is just hurting you. By the way, the reason why women in average are just diagnosed between 36 and 39 years old is because: 1. We're not usually the hyperactive type, but we can be hyperactive with our minds or speech 2. ADHD is genetic, so we grow with other family members who did things like we do so we think it's normal (i.e. in my family, arriving 1h late to a dinner is normal) 3. We learn a ton of techniques to help us function (like the ones you mentioned here which worked for me until they stopped working again), but we still do a ton of effort to be able to manage our personal and professional while wanting to be good family members, friends and partner(s), but after so much effort, it's in the mid thirties that we just can't do it anymore. It's such a big effort and we just end up super anxious or depressed (that we later find out it's low dopamine from ADHD). Before I wrap up, I want to say that ADHD has the poorest name ever, we don't have attention deficit. We have an attention dysregulation, because when deadlines hit or for any other reason like gamification, we go into hyperfocus and do stuff way faster than anyone else. Or we hyperfocus on things that we love and learn a ton of stuff. I suggest you check Connor DeWolfe Tik Tok or How To ADHD to see if you can relate. 🙏

For me focusing on 1 thing each day, just showing up, the idea that I would be disappointed to die knowing that my life was a joke (i.e. I wasted my life on nothing) pushes me to give 100% to want I want to learn/achieve and yes some days it feels really hard to focus so I need to "get out of my head" by cooking, taking a shower or listen to music. Starting my day with the 1 thing I want to do removes great stress and puts me in an advantage.

Love these! I'm currently using a lot of them to keep myself on track, I've found the "one thing" and "just try" really helpful. I approach just try as "just effing do something" which I think is a Mark Manson thing (maybe), but it's been super helpful to get me through some stuff I was procrastinating hard on. I also like the hack of making something a part of your identify. I routinely tell myself "I'm a person who has discipline", then I go do the hard thing (workout, study, clean, whatever) over time it's slowly crept into being a part of who I see myself as, this tip was something I picked up from Struthless, another KZfaqr, and it's worked wonders for me. Love this video, am definitely going to incorporate the "seeing who I could have been" tip in. I feel it'll be a killer motivator for some of the things I'm a bit fearful to pursue. Tina, thanks a lot for your tips. I'm having a time in my life that I reconsidering all of the shit that happen in early years and trying to focuse in my improve like person as future programmmer. Part of this job is to manage my time and being more productive and less lazyness and also, part of this process is to learn and try to focuse on my english who is really weak at this time

I can totally relate to this video , feeling grateful it showed up in my feed. Another one thing I want to add is “You are just one decision away from a completely different life” The one decision maybe as simple as waking up from bed(it’s not easy for me though) act upon one decesion at a time.

Totally agree with the news thing. I've been avoiding international news for a long time, and it actually kind of helped my mental health during the pandemic. If it's important enough you will hear about it. I only try to keep up with news from my home country and even that can be a bit much sometimes 🙃

Hi Tina! I find myself in the same cycle. Utter Avoidance of Life -> Growing Self-Hatred -> Burst of Activity to Hopefully this Time Achieve Cyclical Escape Velocity -> Utter Avoidance of Life. Thanks for sharing your story. I have the book actually, and set it aside several avoidance cycles ago. Feeling motivated to pick it up again

Wow. I feel like I have made all these mistakes before and all the time . I try so hard to be productive on my goals and I inevitably find some way to distract myself or not be accountable to myself . It’s so frustrating and depressing and like you said it’s not from not trying . I’m so envious of people that don’t have this problem or are able to overcome it

For me what keeps me on track with repetitive things like working out, studying languages is to have unclear deadlines - when you have to be ready at any possible given moment to do the thing, you can't procrastinate studying/practicing the thing.

This really resonates with me, as I am in a very similar place in my life, with exactly the same struggles and thought processes about them. I am even half way through the Atomic Habits right now, lol. Thank you for the video, this definitely gave me a few tips that I havent considered before. Also good to know youtube is not just full of super productive people, but a normal human being like me :)

Ikr, most studytubes are like those straight A students in my class… it just doesn’t resonate with me. I’m in the middle of my graduate program rn… and I have so many assignments. This video is actually kinda helpful

I tend to succumb to the laziness quite often due to stressors and feeling constantly overwhelmed. Thanks for the tips. On my good days, I tend to try some of these: Focus on one thing, Eat the frog and Just show up. I have found that just showing up, even on my bad/emotional days makes me more motivated to do something. Just getting up, putting in the effort to look decent and rocking up to work helped. Since I'm already there, might as well do something, you know. And that something must be done in the morning while I'm still feeling motivated. And if I can do 1 thing, I've accomplished something rather than nothing. I am interested in trying the Input based goals. I often find that I have all the intention and think about things I want to do, but I seriously lack in the execution. I start things I never finish, I plan things I never get around to doing. Making it seem small and hopefully effortless might spur that motivation back, if only temporarily but hopefully long enough to get something done! The dying thing sounds scary, but that fear can hopefully motivate me as much as my fear of failure does haha (the irony >_
