Philips sells a Hue Dimmer switch which can be used instead of app/voice assistant.

Philips Hue are meant to be always hot/on so not really a con, per se, that you can't use traditional wall switches. I have their Dimmer switches all over the house wherever the bulbs are installed, and also having the app and the integration with Google/Alexa is also a convenience we use all the time.

They have the exact same Hue downlight that's designed specifically as a retrofit for cans.... seems a lot easier. I have dozens of those retrofit lights and they work amazingly.

What is the model number? Is it just the non-slim version that comes with the e26 adapter?

I tried the non "slim" hue recessed in my 6" cans and they didnt work, they dont sit fush. They drop about a 1/4". I have Cree retrofit light and trim all in one with the two long spring hangers and they fit perfectly. I'd like to have them Hue though. These slim ones seem a better design then the non-slim

PLEASE...Nobody pull the wires through the tiny holes like he did in this video. This can possibly cause shorting years down the road. Open one of the 1/2" knockouts and at a minimum use a push in bushing or romex connector...my gosh...

You’ve probably discovered this but for others ; Hue has dedicated switches/controllers that you can use for the lights synced to the hue bridge. Their tap dials and smart dimmers even have third party switch covers to magnetically place the controllers. once you have them programmed you just need to have the switch on.

Nice work! Im about to convert 30 old cans and trying to find the best solution. The other version doesn't have that spring clip. This is a good Hybrid Idea. Thank you for the video!

The other version has three spring tabs and do not work well in my 6" cans for retrofitting . I push them up and the just fall down about a 1/4". Ive tried adjusting them, they angle a bit to accommodate 6" and 5" cans (supposedly). I just found this out, now have to return them. I'll now have to try what this guy did here in this video, looks like a better design to hold it up.

Hey thanks for the video. Is there a way to configure the lights during install where you can only turn on the Philips Hue light when it is in the ceiling with other non-smart lights or do you have to turn on all of them? Asking because I would love to only put in one Hue light and not replace all of them but use the different colors without turning on all the lights. Thanks!

So they’re 100 lumens brighter than the original downlights? Seems easier to just get the originals and screw them in. These slim ones are great if you don’t have existing cans though.

Curious as to why you needed the junction box, won’t the Hue light just screw into the can and plug directly into the hue light?

There are different Hue downlights, the older model has the E26 retrofit kit but reviews say the wire fixtures don’t hold that in well, these slim recessed lights don’t have a E26 screw in plug as they are designed to just be placed in drywall cut outs but what I’m showing here is that you can put them still in a can with a E26 adapter already in place and the spring clips hold pretty well

My problem is that builders have been putting in slim puck light not using a can, but small plastic octagon boxes, which have no room for any type of communication hardware. In my last house (before slim models released), I literally had to hack these out and put in can remodel retrofits, in order to house the Hue can down light. My current house I think has the same small electrical box…so the slim doesnt fix the problem because still no room in small octagon box (and the slim instructions have a big X by drawings of stuffing the control box right above the light..it has to have a little distance.

Assuming you installed the same thin LED style with the external electrical box, you did not need to install retrofit cans. These can just go directly in the attic. Not sure how difficult removing the ceiling box is, but not having to then add retrofit cans will definitely make it easier. If the boxes are difficult to remove, maybe drill a hole and pass the small wire through and leave the connection box outside the ceiling box? That would require more time in the attic though. Not sure why they want the controller and light to be separated, cant be due to heat since the attic will be much warmer. Maybe due to connection interference from the puck itself.

Great job! 👍 Just wondering, is it possible for them to work without the Hue Bridge? 🤔 I tried installing them, but they didn't turn on, so I had to switch back to the old ones. I didn't have the Hue Bridge installed. Additionally, do I need to set them up using the Hue app before they can be used? 📱💡By the way, I would like to install 12 total lights in two rooms (The rooms are on the same floor). 6 lights in each room.

If you wired everything correctly, they should turn on to their default white light without any smart functionality or bridge connection. However, a Hue bridge or direct Bluetooth pairing is required for dimming, smart, and color change features. If you cycle the power on and off at a standard light switch, it will reset to white.

Hmm, that's strange 😕. The older devices seem to be working fine, but it looks like the Hue light is acting up. I'll try again later and see if I can get it to work. By the way, I have a Kasa Smart Dimmer switch 🤔. Do you think that could be causing any issues? Thanks! @@TheChanClanLife

Did this guy just route 120VAC wires through a tiny sharp hole in the metal junction box? This is why you don't go to youtube to learn how to do electrical work.
