Here's Ted Cruz on with Michael Knowles and I will tell you something, I did this is we are back to where we were in the early 2000s where the Republican party and we've said this many times all the grooming stories. They'll say trans or they'll say you know they'll say transvestites or they'll say transgender but make no mistake about it they are revisiting the homophobia of those early 2000s. They don't you know like somebody who's transphobic.

It's not "lesbian toys". They are people in this movie. The premise of this movie is that it's a movie about people, not toys. The people in this movie inspired the toys that kids played with in the other movies. So he's really pissed off about lesbians but he doesn't even know what he's talking about when he calls them toys. Exactly three years ago the writer James Kirchick (author of "Secret City", the brilliant new history of gay Washington D.C.) wrote an article in The Atlantic titled "The Struggle For Gay Rights is Over". Subtitle: "For those born into a form of adversity, sometimes the hardest thing to do is admitting that they’ve won." He's right that the left has trouble acknowledging victories. But in light of recent developments, I think he may want to revise his opinions.

According to the press release, the movie Lightyear isn't about the toy Buzz Lightyear that was featured in the movie Toy Story and its sequels. In the world of Toy Story, the Buzz Lightyear doll was movie merch based on Andy's favorite movie, and the new movie Lightyear is that movie. So the Buzz Lightyear in the movie isn't a toy, and neither are the other characters in the movie, including the ones that are said to be lesbians. It's not lesbian toys but lesbian cartoon characters. I haven't seen the film, so I don't know how strongly these characters are coded as lesbians. History suggests, not too strongly.

You know that fable about the old, presumably well-traveled fish who asks a young fish what they think of the water, when the young fish hasn't even learned what water is yet, doesn't realize that they've spent their whole life swimming through such a substance, and has no idea how to describe the specific water they're living in in relation to other types of water? I feel like the marks who listen to people like Ted Cruz have a similar understanding of their heterosexuality to the young fish's understanding of water: they have plenty of hands-on experience with it, yes, but they've gone so long without questioning what it is or how it could be different that they don't tend to notice when it's present, only when it's missing. Barbie and Ken are a "normal" couple. Nothing confusing about that, so it's fine for the whole family. Alisha and her wife? Abnormal. Alien. Abhorrent. It forces me to acknowledge that people have sexuality, and kids shouldn't be exposed to that. Like a fish out of water, someone who thinks the way Ted Cruz wants them to think can scarcely fathom that another living creature could be safe, much less healthy, living outside of what's "normal," so raising a child in that milieu is out of the question. Unlike an anthropomorphic fish youth, it can take them years if not the rest of their life to give up what they think they know.
