We ALL have bias. This is a popular training topic that has become a focus of discussion largely due to incidents of racial unrest and protest. If it is a fact that we ALL have bias, how can we move beyond it? Lisa Johnson, SHRM-SCP is a professional speaker, author and leadership coach. As owner of HR Know-How consultancy she helps busy professionals build their leadership skills. She is published in the anthology Imagination@Work: Shifting Boundaries in The Modern Workplace. She is a member of the National Speakers Association. She serves on the Board of Directors of Town & Country Bank and Trust Company and of Catholic Charities of Louisville. She is Immediate Past President of the Louisville Society for Human Resource Management and HR Director for Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. Lisa is a 1998 alumnus of Lewis University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I like how you talk about the importance of self-reflecting on events in the past that have shaped our biases and we are not conscious of them. It made me think about the way I act in some situations and ask if that is a reflection of something that has happened in the past.

Lisa you remind us of how our everyday actions can lead to bias, but can also tear it down. Great presentation.

Lisa, a simply outstanding job with a very nuanced subject. Unconscious or implicit bias carries that name for a reason. WE (all of us humans) often don’t realize that we have these blind spots about others and ourselves, as you so eloquently illustrated in this talk. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

This really resonated with me. How often do we feel uncomfortable because we believe others must be thinking about "me". The truth is people are often just preoccupied with themselves. I am glad you are more free to extend grace to yourself and others. Great presentation.

Awesome!!! I have retreated and stayed in my own world because I did not want to be the one to always explain. Taking the high road is not always easy! Thank you Lisa! I would love to share this with my staff.

Excellent points, and well-stated. I have to catch myself from doing what you mentioned - letting a few bad actors cause me to paint a whole category of people with a broad brush. As you said, we all just want to be understood.

Thank you for sharing, Lisa. Wonderful TedTalk. That protective barrier is so comforting; yet there is no growth inside of the comfort zone. Thank you for helping me consider the value in removing those barriers for the sake of being the good example.
