Such an important piece of industrial heritage. Let’s hope one day it gets fully restored!

It really was and it was so quick as well but they don’t seem to have stayed, maybe it’s a maintenance thing and having to have a team on duty

In the U.S. there was the Morris canal that used both locks and inclined Planes to raise barges about the size of your narrow boats over 900 feet . The boats were raised not by steam engines but water turbines. With its two navigable feeders, the canal was 107 mi (172 km) long. Its ascent eastward from Phillipsburg to its feeder from Lake Hopatcong was 760 ft (230 m), and the descent from there to tidewater was 914 ft (279 m). Surmounting the height difference was considered a major engineering feat of its day, accomplished through 23 locks and 23 inclined planes - essentially, short railways that carried canal boats in open cars uphill and downhill using water-powered winches. Inclined planes required less time and water than locks, although they were more expensive to build and maintain.

Fascinating video of this novel inclined plane. Although its great to see the rails have been reinstated, I wonder if consideration has been given to further restoration. Canals, seem to have played a vital part in the industrial life of the area - but maybe have been rather neglected in comparison with other restoration projects.

I don’t think there’s much hope. The town of Telford itself has been massively built on and most of it has now gone. It was only a tub boat canal so it wasn’t suitable for narrowboats. The Shrewsbury canal of the Shrewsbury and Newport was the only bit that got converted, even the tench arm from that isn’t getting restored which joins on to Wappenshall junction (there’s a brief video in here of that fantastic project)

That's a pity. There can't be many tub boat canals with an inclined plane. I seem to recall video's showing some remnants which might be restored @@CourtAboveTheCut

@@malcolmrichardson3881 most are gone, there are a few dotted about but off the top of my head I couldn’t say which ones, I know there’s one next to some locks on a junction and a museum which was used for larger boats but I can’t think off the top of my head where it is! It’s not used anymore but most of it is still there

Brilliant Steve.! New one for me - so after, immediately went googling 'inclined plane'... I'm looking at you Foxton.! 👍 Drone footage superb as ever - god, those engineers really got on with stuff didn't they... Although you've said below in the comments that there's some bits 'missing' from the edit, it still all kind of hangs together for me... (got to admit though, I was more taken with looking at the pictures; imagination whisked off back into history) 😎🙂

Foxton is on my list, it looks like a fascinating area. I’d love to have seen this all working back in the day, the whole area is so rich in industrial history, it’s a shame I was just passing through really. I think I need to go back and capture more of iron bridge and the valley.

There is a very large inclined plane in Ronqieres in Belgium, able to take a 1350 tonne barge.

@@Bandito076 there’s a couple of places where the subject suddenly changed massively, I was messing with the sound a little I must have dropped a few clips without realising!

If you could say more about where it is on the canal network and keep the map up for longer to show how the canal route used to be that would be great 👍🏻
@CourtAboveTheCut11 ай бұрын
@@Bandito076 you can’t really edit videos when they are uploaded, you can only make minor changes like removing sound so the only real option is to delete and upload a new video. I actually made this months ago, it’s been sat in my unlisted file so I don’t even have it on my editing software either. I’ll have the maps if you want me to send them, there’s an email address at the bottom of the description where you can message me to send them.
