Rives BFK etching paper. Probably best to source this from your local store so you can look after the paper and not have it posted unless you are buying a large amount of paper and it will be looked after. Some people have been extremely happy with the state of the paper when it arrived (and some not!)
I love this paper it is soft and lights are lifted easily from it.

Please more of these «10 strokes paintings»! I get too bogged down in details (and planning). This technique teaches me to paint spontaneously and to pay more attention to the dynamics of the colors.

Yes! You could do this over and over on a very small scale and produce some beautiful landscapes! Glad you liked it! The main aim from my point of view was to let the watercolour do its thing wet in wet.

Thanks, Scott. It's a brilliant idea! Challenge accepted. My mind is awash with many possible applications of this idea. On one hand, I can use it to force some deliberation on the strokes to lay down - with extra focus on any or all of composition, values, contrast, color harmony, etc. On the other hand, I can go the opposite direction toward the intuitive, even making the entire painting, including the initial wetting stokes/sprays, with eyes closed, no peeking! I can go monochrome and treat it as a notan-like exercise. Or can go small palette (2-4 colors) and intentionally explore some of the dimensions and boundaries of color push/pull by trying out various color combos. Can also explore other properties such as transparency and granulation. Indeed, I can restrict myself to only colors rated as transparent/semi-transparent, and do the entire painting as glazes, allowing 10 strokes in the first set of glazes, let it dry fully, then allow one final set of 10 glazing strokes. A great way to learn firsthand about how colors play together and possible differences between the same color from different manufacturers. By limiting to 10 strokes, it is harder to overwork and create a muddy, opaque mess. And since I'm a software engineer, my wheels are spinning with ways I can (pseudo-)randomize various decisions such as aspects of color choice and stroke placement. Let an algorithm decide and stick with the choice regardless of how incongruous or counterintuitive it might seem. Many more ideas where that came from! This is going to be fun and freeing. 😁

Brilliant, Scott! You have a new subscriber. I followed along, taking the opportunity to break in my brand new Ron Ranson large hake brush. I tend to be quite tight and controlled in my watercolour painting, so was super excited to see the result of limiting it to 10 strokes. I may even frame it!. I hope you'll do more cool ten stroke painting exercises in future.

Hi Jan! Yes no prep, no time, just put on and see what happens. You could of course wait for it to dry and then apply your last few strokes dry brush! Could be fun! Glad it got you wanting to paint!

I just wanted you to know that this exercise has taught me so much about economy of brush strokes, and about judging the ratio of pigment to the amount of water, both in the mix and on the paper! Thank you SO much!

Hi Gill! I am so glad! I was thinking to myself what I had noticed people having trouble with in my Patreon group and one thing I noticed was people were treating watercolour like oils or acrylics and painting on the page again and again until it was a muddy mess and lacking in white whites and dark darks. That is how I came up with this lesson! Glad you like it!

I definitely tried this, made it to 10 Strokes only, but I couldn't leave it alone. I saw a image that resembled an animal so I tried the pain it in. That was cheating so I plan on doing it again without cheating.

I really loved it and decided to sign it and share it with my family, my best fan club. If I can figure out how to send you a picture I will. Thank you so much Scott you are very inspiring.
