Playing someone that bases his/her game on returning shots and waiting for a mistake can be very frustrating. These players are usually good runners and never take risks. They just get the ball back over and over. If you attack they lob. They will never attack but just wait for your mistakes. This video is going to give you ideas on how to deal with such players and what you can try to beat them.

I agree with everything you say I have done most of what you have said and now I don’t fear pushers I played a final against the supreme pusher, the fittest player I have ever played. He hit slice on both sides but rarely made a mistake from the back of the court. I won much easier than I would normally by total concentration bounce hit and playing 80% of my power so I made very few mistakes but still moved him around and came to the net on a deep approach and also short approach. Since that victory I have improved all my attacking shots so I like playing pushers because I know they can’t hurt me. Players with big heavy shots I am much more challenged by because I know they can hurt me if I am not 100% and even then they may beat me. Thanks again for all your helpful engaging drills and tips

I am glad you find the information useful and are trying to incorporate it into your game. Pushers are hard to play if you do not have the right tools or strategy. You have to respect them! If you like the videos you will find my book Play Tennis with passion very useful. It is a compendium of very effective and practical advice. All the best, Edgar

I think pushers have an undeserved bad reputation. Having the discipline to play within your ability to get the ball in the court consistently is not easy! Good luck!

This is a bit unfair on pushers - they have just prioritised having a stroke that is slower, simpler and takes less effort so it never breaks down over going for pace and power. It works, they play well above their apparent skill level. As for bringing them to the net, well only against a very weak pusher, all the better ones are perfectly capable of putting the ball from anywhere to anywhere just not that hard. If they are at the net then you give them the advantage as you have less time so even their low power shots are hard to reach, in addition they will have an awesome lob so you know if you end up at the net too it's going over your head and landing on the base line. I say this belonging to a club where our best pusher generally beats everyone including all the power players.
