I was the "new plate guy" in the black Model 3 that you saw on the trip. We thought you were in the Applebees when we stopped there and was hoping to see you and talk. When we first saw you in Limon we googled EV Dave from the plate on the MY and then saw you and Dave in the Mach E shortly after. The kids were really hoping to see you at another supercharger stop because they wanted to meet a "KZfaq Celebrity". We had only had the car for a week and was taking it on a road trip from Colorado to Florida and back, 4500 miles total.

The crazy part about this is how easily the Y keeps up and even passes the MachE and kyle only uses v2 in this video. I'm pretty confidently that by the way they are rolling out v3s there should be more v3s then v2s by year end. Kinda bugs me how kyle always only manages to find v2s, almost like he puts on kid gloves to try and spare the other evs embarrassment.

It’s nice to know that these road trips can be done with ev’s fairly efficiently and that there are plenty of chargers. When I get a Tesla I might take a trip or two but honestly it will be used locally 99% of the time.

IMO the issue isn't hightway driving, there are enough stations on interstates. But if you want to travel off the beaten path, or outside of major metro areas, it's another story. Nearest DCFC to my place is over an hour away, and several "day trips" I have done recently haven't had any available. I don't have an EV yet, but pay attention to see how practical it will be for me. Now-in some parts of the country that's not an issue. In maybe 90%....it still is. We have a ways to go before DCFCs become as common as gas pumps. But it's coming!

The ease of SuperCharging is what makes the Tesla experience so much better, no fuss, no stress, especially with V3 SC'ers. Just plug in, charge, and go. The elegant Tesla wand should have been the "standard". Interesting how EA has placed their chargers near tesla SC'ers? Plus the wh/mi is always Tesla's secret sauce. We have a 2020 LR AWD Model Y but added the Performance Boost for $2K so I get a nice performance boost dropped my 0 to 60 in 4.1 seconds from 4.8 and no hit to the range and much prefer the all-season 19" tires/wheels. I hope tesla offers Enhanced AP for $4K again. I'm in at that price point. I no longer use the wheel "wiggle" but use the volume scroll wheel to let the car know I'm still there. Appreciate your videos.

We made this trip 4x a year from Colorado to North Carolina while our daughter attended Duke university for 4 years (came home for summer, go back for summer, come home at Christmas, return after New Years). One of us would fly up and then drive back with her, or drive to school with her and and then fly back home while she stayed. We got 20 MPG avg in a 2006 and 2012 Subaru Tribecca, and 28-30 mpg avg in a 2005 and 2015 Subaru Impreza, Most of our route was the same as yours, and we'd stay the night in west side of Kansas City at the end of day #1, and then usually on the east side of Nashville the evening of Day #2 (or Louisville KY once). In 2014 we got hit head-on in Goodland Kansas when another driver hit black ice, and my daughter and I both broke both of our legs and spent months in wheelchairs. But thanks to the 2005 Impreza safety we survived a head-on collision when a Toyota Tacoma crossed into our lane and hit us head-on at 70mph. Ambulance ride was less fun.

One thing everyone forgets is that on a daily and weekly basis your ev is charged up for you every morning which can saves quite a bit of time in your day to day life not having to stop for fuel. So when you do go on a road trip you are just using up some of that time you saved not getting gas day to day. If you don't do a ton of long road trips you will actually save time over an ice vehicle if you figure out all the time you spend getting gas

Why would you say that when all you have todo is press find charging stations and filter faster changers.. the way you made it sounds as if the car does not show you chargers .. so if you did not know that’s how you find out .. press where to? How about a video on optimizing highway trips? What I mean is balancing highway speed with how far you can drive with how long you charge to minimize trip elapsed time.
@Geckogold
@Geckogold 3 жыл бұрын
He covers this in other videos. Basically you want to charge just enough to have a 5-10% battery charge when you reach the next closest Supercharger. Typically it'll charge to around 50-65%, then when the charging speed starts to taper down, that's when you want to go. In colder weather or really heavy headwinds and/or going uphill, you may want to charge until you have a 20% buffer just in case. Kyle will tend to try to get to the Supercharger at 5% or less when possible. If he has more charge as he gets close, he'll speed up a little to burn up more electricity so as to arrive with a lower state of charge. While this is overall the fastest way to road trip in a Tesla, for others it's more about the road trip experience, so in other Tesla road trip videos, those KZfaqrs will often play it safe and have a 20-30% buffer between charging stops. There's nothing wrong with that too, because although there's a lot of Superchargers around, it still doesn't have coverage everywhere. Even in some of Kyle's previous videos he tries to take the off-beaten path once in a while, and runs into trouble because the charger isn't working, or he has to slow way down due to weather conditions being worse than expected. I think we saw some in his summer 2020 road trip, where he tried to find some CHAdeMO stations and they weren't working.

@@Geckogold Thanks - I haven't see those videos. Part of what I was asking would relate to whether or not watt hours per mile goes up linearly with speed or not. I would suspect that is geometric. The question then is where is the bend in the curve where the best balance between speed and consumption occurs.
@Robbie6298
@Robbie6298 3 жыл бұрын
@@nobrien1 The best balance is to rip it as fast as possible to the next station and pull in with a low state of charge. In a model 3 at a supercharger you add charge significantly faster than you consume charge. Even if you drive at 100mph and consume 500 wh/mi you will replenish charge at 10x the speed at the next supercharger station. The only exception is if the supercharger station is significantly off your route, you need to charge to a high soc, or if it is the last leg of your route and you can get to the final destination by going slower instead of stopping.
@ansonhargrove166
@ansonhargrove166 2 жыл бұрын
Just a suggestion. Charge up more than you think you might need. Rolling into Supercharger with 1% in the pack is IMO damaging the pack. It's taking it down too far (voltage). Probably around 3.2V per cell. That's really to low for longevity. Better to come in around 10%. I've been watching my S and X with OBDLink and Scan My Tesla - voltage readings and I was surprised how low Tesla lets the battery pack go. Also the reason your Model 3 won't charge as fast is Internal Resistance. IR goes up with age of pack. Thanks and love your videos!

You should be able to tell it the max charge you want, car calculates the optimal charge path to get there, turns on the seat heaters when it’s time and notifies you 10 minutes before it’s ready.

Just picked up an SR Model Y that I'll be road-tripping cross country multiple times this year. Do you prefer the Model 3 or Model Y?

Kyle, you should use the Starbucks App to order your usual. It will pick the closest location to you. It will also tell you if the product is unavailable when choosing it. You won’t waste time sitting in the drive thru. I always just park and pickup at the counter. It’s usually quicker than waiting in a line for drive up.

True but I've fallen prey to their bonus star missions on occasion and ordered things I didn't actually want. Now wiser, I always order then check if any of the bonus stars apply to my order before checking out.

+1 on the auto lane change. Don’t have it on our MY but love it on our M3 on highway trips. Waiting to see how much the subscription for fsd will be for the MY.

Hopefully they don't rope us in for a minimum amount of months because I could definitely get by with only subscribing for 2-3 months of the year. Locked fsd in on my cybertruck order but I opted out on my 3 because it didn't add enough and figured it would be a while until it did.

Kyle, on the V2 splitting power evenly, I had the same experience in Montreal not too long ago. I was at 140kW and dropped to around 72 as soon as someone plugged besides me. I was as surprised as you. Maybe they changed the algorithm?

I find it easier to turn the volume dial up or down to let Autopilot know I'm paying attention. I've unintentionally disengaged by tugging on the wheel too often.

Noticing charging locations. Tesla is at grocery stores coffee shops and hotels. The others seem to be at Walmart’s and near truck stops. Where do you want to hang out for an hour or two?

32:15 I’ve seen a few Teslas do this at CCS and J-1772 stations around me. It’s unfortunate and gives Tesla owners a bad look, I saw one that was left unplugged at a level 2 station for two days.

they should add a scale in the seat so you can check how much weight you put on during this trip alongside your range.
