Franz von Holzhausen has been Tesla's chief designer since 2008. CNBC got a rare interview with him at the Peterson Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, which recently opened a new Tesla exhibit. He was a lead designer on the Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y as well as the Cybertruck, Tesla Semi truck and the second generation Roadster. Prior to Tesla, he worked in design at Mazda, General Motors, and Volkswagen. He speaks to CNBC about what it is like to have Elon Musk as a boss, what happened with the glass shattering windows at the Cybertruck unveil, and what is next for auto design.

This is another thing about tesla - their product presentations are not done by pre recorded adverts produced by an advertising agency making a video - instead you get the actual designers and engineers like Franz up on stage with the CEO doing product releases with live audiences and answering questions etc. It seems very open and honest it's a good way to do things and gives recognition and credit to the engineers and other people making the products.

Why do you think in first place that Tesla is Elon? Serious question as a shareholder and a long-time Tesla fan, and as a Tesla owner. Elon has always given Franz absolutely all the credit for designs in every single interview, podcast and there's gigaton of interviews and news articles also. As far as I see from all possible media (which is not second hand trash media), Elon has always, ALWAYS given credit for Tesla teams and inviduals where credit is due.

@justingolden21
@justingolden21 Жыл бұрын
It's hard to not make quality content when you're CNBC in a non political space and here's why: 1) They have enough influence so they can interview anyone, just ask and you'll get an interview with the top guys at Tesla, unlike smaller outlets. 2) They have enough money for good equipment such as cameras, mics, video editors, etc. to put together a high production value video, and 3) They have enough money to do market research and figure out what people actually wanna hear. So your end result is something people want to se that not only gets made, but gets made well. When there's any hint of politics though, all journalistic integrity goes out the window and CNBC becomes about as bad if not worse than CNN or Fox.

@@rlsedition I hope you are right, but I fear you are wrong. Here is why: Tesla can build a car for about half what it costs the OEMs to do it. They also can build them at least 3 times faster than VW who was known up till then as the fastest car builder in the world. Tesla has locked in supply contracts for years with battery suppliers, mines, etc. They do not have nearly the supply chain issues others have and will continue to have into the latter part of this decade….. by then it will all be nearly over. EVs are run on software and Tesla is the front runner on this too. Finally Tesla does not have to deal with unions nor dealers (who mark up the price of the cars making them not as competitive). Integrity is the foundation of a just society . The motivation, hard work, and proving to others nothing is impossible all come together at tommorrow event. I hope all kids and students watch this as a learning tool to become innovators and create great products that are fun, make the world better and save lives. Tesla motivation stems from The tragedy in Humboldt. Autopilot in trucks will prevent such horrific incidents in the future.

Loved this interview … want more of such interviews from Mr. Franz Von Holzhausen … just love his work … the way he has got the design of model 3 and Y and more recent the plaid models to perfection is just amazing. Uncle Elon, Mr. Franz and Mr. J B Straubel are the three pillars of Tesla. Can you guys at CNBC get such an interview of Mr. J B Straubel next time? Or try to have these three guys in one frame … that would be supercool and nostalgic 😊

Drew Baglino, Senior Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering, is another key individual, so is Zach Kirkhorn, Master of Coin and CFO. And even after Andrej Karpathy left, Tesla AI has some great leaders. Desapite Musk's antics, being the #1 or #2 choice of engineering graduates to work for years means Tesla (and SpaceX) keep hiring great talent.

@skierpage
@skierpage Жыл бұрын
@@LafemmebearMusic how is Tesla innovation held back by Musk's Twitter fiasco? Tesla has been intentionally and ruthlessly focused on increasing production of existing models from two new factories; as Elon Musk has repeatedly explained on investor calls, introducing any new models in 2022 would only reduce its total production volume. We'll see in 2024 if Tesla has uncompetitive products and battery chemistries because the competition innovated while Tesla kept making more of the same widgets. I'm fairly confident that Franz von Holzhausen and engineering teams are working on future stuff in-house, but it's not going to announce anything that would reduce demand for its current car models.

The FORD design studio is in Dearborn, Mi. Next door to the studio is a HUGE warehouse where FORD has examples of EVERY model car & truck they have ever built. When the design studio hires a new designer, they send them over to the warehouse to look for inspiration from past models. When the new designer finds one they like, the studio boss has them pull it out & wash it. BY HAND. He wants them to FEEL the lines. Feel the angles & the straights. To really FEEL the car. THEN, the boss has them drive it. !

I think the Tesla Model S is one of the earliest cars to have self-presenting door handles that rise out of the bodywork when the owner approaches. You can set the Model X so the driver's door automatically "partially opens (between 20° and 45° depending on obstacles detected by sensors)" when you approach.

Franz creativity is being unleashed i don't think that would be possible anywhere but Tesla. Can't wait to see the Cybertruck in the wild. It's a standout so eloquently designing the form to follow the function the materials and the technology is brilliant the cybertruck is a revolution that defies tradition. When you see the cybertruck or the semi on the road then you will know we are in the future.

HUH? The interior of the Mercedes EQ, and the newer BMW i4, iX, i7, as well as other EVs kick the crap out of Tesla in terms of design, build quality and materials for their interiors. Go sit in an EQS and then get in a Tesla Model S. See which one you'd rather have. I'd take the Mercedes in a heart beat. I do NOT need a car that does 0-Ticket much faster than the EQS or the BMW EVs do. The only thing that Tesla might have is their Supercharger network and they typically do have slightly better charge times. But I think those advantages might go away. Tesla's been doing it longer, so they have more development time involved. But it Elon detracts from Tesla, then he may find himself behind the 8 ball.
