Adam spends the week at Prop Store's UK headquarters examining incredible movie props and costumes from film history. One of his current obsessions is the Book of Amun-Ra (aka Golden Book of the Living) from the 1999 film The Mummy, and he gets to flip open one of the original book props made for the film. Along with a working Key of Hamunaptra prop, this book has a working mechanisms for its lock and incredible gold leafed details on every page!

The one thing I know about film-making is that whether you realise it or not, your eyes pick up detail because it expects to, but ignores it as "background". I think I said that badly. Point is if you DIDN'T see any, it'd stand out like a beacon in the night.

@@slysneakly6465 That makes a lot of sense. Our eyes often see the anomalies or what seems unnatural immediately without us even realizing it at first. This is probably why I often notice when scenes in films are using CGI backgrounds, especially in daylight scenes, because they don't really... interact naturally with the characters... if you understand what I'm saying.

Astounding considering how they did everything they could to cut the budgets on both The Mummy and The Mummy returns in almost every other way. I remember doing a Universal Studios tour just after The Mummy Returns had released and the tour guide telling us they did almost NO location shooting on that film to cut the budget as much as possible - for example they just hired piles of plants and used the Universal backlot for the jungle scenes! When I watch that scene in the film now I all I can see is pot plants.

Also the few scenes where they drop it on tables and it thuds down and makes a cloud of dust… etc. Makes sense, there are a handful of scenes where you can feel how heavy it is and that’s not something you can really fake… our minds are too good at detecting fakery when it comes to heft and real weight, that’s why you can always tell when actors hold empty cups and it looks so stupid… or when they pretend to hold a heavy paper bag of groceries that flops around and it clearly weighs nothing and has like a single fake celery and baguette sticking out the top! He let me pick it up off the table and it was heavy. Only lifted it about an inch and placed it back on the table (didn’t want to accidentally break it). He told me when they filmed The Mummy Returns he didn’t make a hero prop for the Scorpion King bracelet in the first weeks of filming. He said he had to create the hero prop when the Rock accidentally fell on it during a fight scene. I was like you didn’t make one before hand? He said something about time constraints but mainly said it took him a week to fix the Scorpion King bracelet.

I remember seeing that as a kid when the actress is holding what has to be this prop, because I remember her posture, trying to hold something heavy. I remember thinking-yeah, that’s real metal! And here all these years later, it is.

The Mummy is one of our, my families, favorites! We would watch it all the time when the kids were growing up. It's a shame what happened to Bredan Fraser, I myself grew up watching Encino Man, Jarheads, etc. Fun episode!

I watch a lot of "behind the scenes" videos and such, so I'm very familiar with the "hero" and "prop" weapons. I had no idea they made "hero" and "prop" versions of the books for The Mummy! I can't even imagine the feel and weight of this sculpted-bronze book with gold-leaf gilding!! Amazing!

I'm so glad to hear there at the end that you're planning on getting the pages translated! As you were flipping through it, that was the thought dominating my mind. Real hieroglyphs, what do they really say? Please do a follow up video on the translation, I'm sure many would love to know.

Absolutely love this. Still a big fan of the first film since seeing it in the cinema and it being a bit of a surprise hit. The two props are astounding in their craftsmanship and detailing. Honestly they could go in the Egyptology section of The British Museum and fit right in. Awesome job from the props team and also the team here!

This is the first prop that I actually want. I've never wanted a prop from a movie before but I love the mummy and this would be amazing to have.

This is why classics like The Mummy holds up to this day. The use of practical effects and actual sets make it look as good in 2022 because they were using actual stuff. Of course there were some VFX used but the overall feel was still very authentic. I'm talking specifically about The Mummy and not the sequel because the sequel really started going too heavy on CGI.

one of the coolest thing to happen to me was i was working on a film and i got to go into the universal prop house and i found the spear of Osiris amongst the Egyptian props. i have a pic of me holding it. the mummy films are some of my favorites. such amazing detail. i never got a close up view until now but you can see the individual piece of gold leaf they used. so cool! i always wondered.

God, it would be a dream to own both those items and display them in my home. I sometimes spend a ridiculous amount of money on stuff, but the bid for the book alone starts at £15,000.
