Adam Savage gives his annual "Sunday sermon" at the 2018 Bay Area Maker Faire. Adam talks about an essential aspect of making and maker culture: generosity and sharing. With examples from his own experiences and the world at large, Adam explains why the more we share, the more we have.

That was so moving. I love the eloquent way you framed the core of making and sharing and being a part of the community. I remember when I was first starting out, any time I asked about a technique or source for material I was always told it was a secret. Now when I get the same questions I make my most profound effort to share everything I know, because I want that person to follow my path and ultimately show me a better way. Thanks so much for the beautiful speach.

I often fantasize about making beautiful things, putting enormous effort into an original, personal object and giving it away to someone I care for. Even that makes me happy... Next thing is to make it a reality. 😊

I hadn't really consciously thought about it but the joy I get in giving away 90% of the things I make Is just about equal to the joy taken from the making in the first place.

Make Brooklyn I often make a thing, look at it, and think "well this is a neat thing, but what am I going to DO with it?" I like the making more than the having, and I need to get better at moving objects to other people.

Object made by yourself will always be a gartering of materials, tools and techniques; while same object gifted becomes magic for a person it was gifted to. Agree, and I have more joy in gifting my works then making them.

This is exactly how I feel. I have a hard rule that I don't make to sell for a job. I make to satisfy interesting request for people that appreciate the end product.

What a beautiful speech! It always makes me sad when people try to claim ownership to a simple idea or a technique and guard them jealously and indefinitely. Everything is built on previous knowledge and sharing the knowledge will create a wider platform for new ideas to grow upon. Progress is also much faster when we don't have to invent the wheel over and over again.

I say almost as NOTHING beats sending someone something you have made and seeing their reaction to it...... What a feeling.

I feel exactly the same about turning 50 (in a couple of months now). I've been spending a lot of time giving things away or binning them, to make space for a new phase of life. Sharing my knowledge is the thing I am most looking forward to doing, for those who will listen. I always enjoyed it but it's taken a different dimension now.

I understand what Adam is saying but if I can learn what companies are making and get the materials and equipment then I no longer need to buy the companies' products. For example, 3D printers that can make tools so the 3D printer owner doesnt have to buy them from a hardware store. Another example is that if someone shares all his or her knowledge at work then the company could get rid of that person and train someone else with all that person's knowledge. Sharing is good for consumers but could drive companies out of business if everyone can make their products as good or better.

I think he's honestly just well spoken. He doesn't come across as trying to impress anyone with fancy speech, he just does a ridiculous amount of reading and has a large internal word bank.
